I saw an old film of Sara Carter (The Carter Family) playing it on a table, buttons with her left hand and stroking the strings on the small section on the other side of the buttons, where the piano keyboard is shown.

I have to admit that I have turn my autoharp around as I have trouble holding it for long time I tired to play cross handed but that is rough for me. I know when some here this it makes them cry lol but if you make a Beautiful sound go for it.
As a player of (and espouser of) autoharps in the lap, I would like to offer the suggestion that you simply cross your hands and then play with the bass strings closest to you. There are some serious advantages to playing that way. If you wish, the autoharp music I present on my channel is all played in that manner.
Everybody I have know played on a table in front of them unless they needed to stand, then they played it against their chest. your harp is in much better shape the is mine. Be well
