The dodgiest anchorage EVER (why did we even try?!) #37

  • This week, we are leaving Cartagena and set sails towards the Balearics! This time a year, the weather in the Mediterranean is still unstable, and we need to make a few stops along the way to dodge some weather.
    Our first stop is in Mar Menor, an inland lake East of Cartagena. We spend our first night at anchorage there before setting sails towards Calpe. On our way, we pass Benidorm, and one of the highest building in Spain among what looks like Manhattan.
    We arrive in Calpe under motor, only to find winds that pick up so much that we have to abort our anchoring operation and go find shelter on the other side of the rock…

    Your videos are great guys! I really enjoy them and I am binge watching from the very beginning! Keep it up!

    Hi guys. I have totally been binge watching your channel whilst in lockdown, Brisbane, Australia. What keeps me watching? Sophie’s gorgeous personality. So humorous !!! Love watching you cook on board. Don’t give up your dream. Love how real and raw you both are. 💕🇳🇿

    So I’ve just found your channel a couple days ago and I’ve been binge watching since the first episode. I love your guys absolute realism with your yachting life.
    But Anyways hello from all the way over in New Zealand. I’ve learnt so much from you both and can’t wait to continue watching.

    Sophie you’re funny when you’re ‘’scoped,” big ole sleepy eyes. Scopolamine never did that for me. But I took it for vertigo caused by a brain injury, so...can I just say again that what I love about your channel is how authentic y’all are. I trained as an actor. And there was this exercise where we were supposed to play ourselves. We had to leave the room, then come back and apologize for being late-as ourselves. I failed! I had to keep doing it over and over, and the teacher and my classmates told me I wasn’t acting like me....?! I still have nightmares about it.

    Fair points and a good informative video! The thing that scares me the most, (like you mentioned) is someone going overboard unconscious without a lifejacket on. It's almost a guaranteed game over if someone doesn't go in the water after them immediately. If you are only 2 on the boat and you are sailing, chances are you're not gonna be able to do that. Not gonna promise to wear mine all of the time though, I will asses the conditions and potential risk but like you said, this will cause disagreements :) Cheers, Chris

    Sophie does Ryan always send you to work with the anchor in 6 to 8 foot seas coming over the bow while he stays in the dry, steady cockpit playing with his telephone? Next time tell him to go and play with the anchor in 6 to 8 foot seas while you stay in the cockpit playing with his phone! Ha ha ha

    Catching you up guys. Whats with the swell outside Celpe? Had the same thing in different winds . Must be the seabed rise or something. Having said that what a lovely spot inside the marina there. Actually worth the € spend for a sub 12 mtr boat . Done our hop over to the islands some great sailing and a pod of Pilot whales. Sail safe guys, great Video. Ant & Cid xx Oh and the pooch crew :-)

    I just returned from the Balaearic coast of Spain yesterday. I was traveling from Valencia to Gandia to Cartagena and all places in between, having bought a Hans Christian 33 in Cartagena and putting her on a ship in Gandia to be transported back to the US. Such a beautiful part of Spain! I recognized that Valiant 40 "Valiant Lady," which was covered with blisters in the marina in ruclips.net/video/SChblawvZ44/видео.html . Small world! Safe passages to you two, thanks for your videos.

    Well Spain is very open to the sea. So the winds and waves are quite common.
    It’s always wise to look for a natural “shield” especially on waves. If the wind get stronger simply add more chain (away from rocks), but the waves keep you bouncing all the time. It kills you

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  5 лет назад

      Yes, those waves... I don't know what we were thinking about trying to anchor in that! /Sophie

    Sophie,
    You should look into getting a Relief Band for your ongoing motion sickness issue. I promise you it works and you will be fine thereafter without medication. You can purchase it on Amazon. ( I have no relationship with the company ) It has completely eliminated my motion sickness issue altogether. Just try it...
    A.J. Beisler
    Do you mean you have tried the battery operated ones that deliver a low grade shock to the median nerve? Wow, that is a bummer. Go safe. And I just got the hat.
    Thanks
    AJB

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  5 лет назад +1

      I have a pair of relief bands onboard, but unfortunately they don't work for me... BUT I found a technique that works for me and annihilates my seasickness in 30 seconds without medicine (I'll demonstrate in a coming video :)) Thanks for the support though :) /Sophie

    We have a saying about the reliability of cars and boats in the US: "If I had a horse, it would always be stepping in gopher holes." Meaning, even if it was a horse, things could go badly wrong.
    Be glad your boat wasn't built by Audi or BMW, you'd have to bring it back to a dealer for customer software diagnostic tools every time a light blinked.(G)

    Hi , so I guess you probably figure out that you might be getting the afternoon 'Sea breeze' effect when you get close to land ........ is there a way you could use that to get better sailing winds? , staying close enough to shore to get the effect ....... I'm sure they used to do that before the days of engines in sailing boats! ( I'm always thinking about wonderful sailing historical novels by C.S Forrester, Alexander Kent during the Napoleonic wars in these waters) . Cheers Warren

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  5 лет назад

      Yes, we've experienced that a bit, but nothing compared to what we experienced that day! The guys on the catamaran we passed at the anchorage became friends of ours after that "incident" and they told us the winds just shifted when we arrived. What an experience! 😅/Sophie
