Great video. The mechanical filter media are also biological as they house a lot of bacteria. And a tip would also be cleaning the sponges and biological media in aquarium water as to not kill the bacteria.
Why would you want fine filter mesh placed after biological and not before? Doesn’t that give fine detritus an unnecessary chance to clog your bio media?
👋! You can do both for sure. Some filters will come with it in the top tray as a polisher and some will come toward the bottom right before biological. And you can change it up for your setup. So these are customizable - but you’re right, principally clean water prior to biological is a priority. If your biological media is covered in large pieces of gunk then you will wash it and the bacteria on it off when you clean. However in a relatively low bio load setup, coarse then medium mechanical will be fine prior to biological. There will be plenty of clean cylinders or spheres in your tray.
1 - Why not have the fine filter media before the biological media, to avoid the biological media from getting clogged with small particles? Like you had in the Fluval filter...
2 - Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the vertical foams in the Fluval 407 filter don't work sequentially, but in parallel, so it's kinda pointless having different grades in there.
Thanks! Definitely can do that. Course to medium to a filter floss leading into Biological is definitely a good set up. Fine filter floss as a polisher in the top tray before the water goes out is another good option.
Totally an option, would depend on whether or not you wanted to create room in the second tray where the medium was - for example, you may want 2 trays of biological. In this particular set up, I wasn't trying to create space but definitely a customizable option
I always wondered why the biological filter aren't fully pack? Can we actually make full use of the compartment by adding extra bioballs etc? Will it hinder the flow? Thanks
Thank you for the video. Can you tell me what hoses you are using on the Fluval filter you removed from the cabinet? That's not the stock hoses. Does BRS sell that hose?
Just watching this as I’m unboxing mine (fluval 107) and it only has 2 trays one with carbon pouch and phosphate sponge and the other has a black sponge and a filter floss layer. How would you recommend setting this up ? Can something be substituted for a biological media ?
@markg7348 - Hey! So the 107 is set up like that to include Fluval's Bio-Foam which will allow for the growth of beneficial bacteria on the foam so you're okay to set up your tank as it came. A 107 is likely not filtering a tank with a large bio load so that can be enough. The benefit of biological media specifically is the greater surface area and more importantly (and this is the part I think matters most) it doesn't get thrown away whereas foam eventually hits a lifespan (like a year) and at that point, you don't want to have to throw away where your bacteria was growing this whole time. Because the trays are pretty small in the 107, a cool hack would be to pick up these brs.li/3NoONY0 which are made for a small desktop aquarium. My recco is to set it up like this: Bottom tray is the black sponge and filter floss on top of it. Top tray is these biospheres. You could just stop there. The carbon and phosphate on top of spheres can be good for water clarity and algae control but may not be necessary (or may be worth holding on to and using if you think those need to be improved). Replace carbon every 4-6 weeks if used consistently. Hope that helps!

💯!
Excellent video! Thank you
Thanks! Was hoping to make the video I wished I had when I started 👊
Beautiful video, very informative precise and clear, congratulations for your professionalism
Thank you 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Always great videos thanks for info. Long time subscriber, supporting your channel from mines @Joy of fish keeping

Great video, but I have a few questions about some things...
3 - Why not put the coarse and medium foams in the same basket in the Sicce filter?
Thanks! Definitely can do that. Course to medium to a filter floss leading into Biological is definitely a good set up. Fine filter floss as a polisher in the top tray before the water goes out is another good option.

👋 For sure - no flow issues. No need to cram though.

Here you go! Use these so that I can run lily pipes brs.li/4gVfcKq
