A Girl Adopted by the Queen Had to Return to Africa

- Remember Queen Victoria, the British monarch who once ruled the biggest empire in the world? The time of her reign was the Victorian Era, people donned Victorian fashion, and buildings were constructed with distinctive Victorian architecture. But there’s one thing not many people know about the Queen: she once adopted an African girl, thus saving her life!
In 1850, a British emissary arrived in Dahomey. Buying and selling captives were still common in this West African kingdom. In fact, its ruler, King Ghezo, was known to capture people from rival tribes. That’s why Captain Frederick E. Forbes of the Royal Navy was sent there to carry out this noble mission. During his stay, the African king introduced him to one of his most valuable prisoners. And it was... a 7-year-old girl named Aina.

SUMMARY:
- Fast-forward to 1850, and a British emissary arrives in Dahomey, which would be part of present-day Benin. Buying and selling captives was still common in this West African kingdom.
- During his stay, the African king introduced him to one of his most valuable prisoners. And it was... a 7-year-old girl named Aina.
- The poor child lost her entire family, while she herself was enslaved.
- There were talks that Aina was going to be used in a sacrifice. When the British officer came to know of the girl’s fate, he decided to rescue her at any cost.
- Soon the two of them left for Britain. His ship that they sailed on was called HMS Bonetta, and the child was given a new name in both the captain and the ship’s honor: young Aina was now Sara Forbes Bonetta.
- For a child that hadn’t received any proper schooling, she really was a bright kid!
- Sara’s bright mind and charm didn’t go unnoticed by the Queen herself either. They first met in 1850 at Windsor Castle.
- The Queen paid for her education and made sure that she grew up into a real English lady. She cared for her so much that she became her godmother.
- When she was 8 years old, was sent to Sierra Leone, which was a British colony at the time. She attended a missionary school there for the next 4 years.
- By that time, Captain Forbes had, unfortunately, passed away, so Sara was sent to live with a missionary named Reverend Schoen and his wife.
- When she turned 19, the Queen decided it was time for Sally to get married. A suitable match was found in no time, and that was Captain James Pinson Labulo Davies, a British naval officer and businessman.
- Since Davies lived and worked in Lagos, which was yet another British colony in Africa, Sara followed him there and started working as a teacher.
- Sara Forbes Bonetta lived an extraordinary life. Wherever she went, whatever challenges she faced, she remained a true lady and an aristocrat in her own right.

Spugie Woogie so your saying it’s better if he left her to die then :/
@@jimmyjay3437 I don't believe these lies and the intentions of those people can never be trusted. The real question is, what did Europeans do while in Africa??? How many lives did they save hmmm? I'm a Nigerian and an avid reader of history and came across this story several years ago. I guess this clip was meant to be a light-hearted introduction to the story of Sarah Forbes Bonetta because the crux of the story and the thinking behind taking Sara to England was touched on only very briefly which was preparing her for missionary service. While Sara may have developed a close relationship with Queen Victoria, she was in reality part of a social experiment. The aim was to create a gentrified class of Africans and plant them in Africa to enable the colonization of that part of the continent. Britain was engaged in a battle for supremacy not just with other European powers that had vested interests in Africa but also disputes with local Kings and tribal chiefs who were not too willing to allow the British dominate their land, their people and their trade rights. There were many Africans like Sara, (although none who had the royal connections with British Monarchy ),who were educated, gentrified and became part of an elite class in places like Nigeria that formed a bridge between Britain and the indigenous Africans. It didn't always go well.
Sister once I heard how she was going to be sacrificed, I just knew the bull was about to start. They didn’t fool me a bit. I just know this story is 75% false. Much love from the US
It didn't always go well indeed, when you think about it, the seed of Rwanda genocide was kind of sowed when Germany and later Belgium used "divide and conquer" in Rwanda and Burundi.
Thank you for telling the other side of things. For sure some things are not what they seem at first glance.
I guess, Dohomey must also not be true!
What do you think would have happened if she was not taken to England?

SIK . At least you have heard about the Annie Walsh Memorial School where she was among the first 20 registered students. If uou can get a copy of the school register check it out.
A black lady once told me that white people did have ALOT to do with slavery but she was upset that slavery was actually started IN africa by their own people. Apparently they would capture people from enemy tribes and sell them as slaves. She was so hurt that they would sell their own people to “white people”. I had no idea it was true but i went home and did some research. Turns out its true. Not to blame anyone or justify such a horrendous practice. Its just a part of histoey that is left out of American history books. There is so much hatred towards one another. We all come from elsewhere. But what matters is our strength together as ONE people. We’re the human race. On Planet Earth. And life is so short to focus on what cannot be changed, the past. But the present and future is up to us. Love One Another🦋🌈💗
So, if the white man felt sorry that Africans were selling each other into slavery, why then keep them in chains even after coming to their land??? That's the million dollar question.

There are still members of the family alive and living in London. There was an ITV documentary about it. Sara has a plaque and a statue and I'm not sure if they finished an exhibit on her in the museum, I can't remember.
But the documentary talks to Victoria's (Sara's daughter) granddaughters, granddaughter and she tells you about how she would talk about how her grandmother was the adoptive granddaughter of Queen Victoria but no one believed her because she was just "normal" and living in a normal street.

Queen Victoria never adopted Sarah and Sarah lived with the
Forbes for awhile before given to the Queen as a gift but Sarah was very sad because she loved MRS Forbes and desperately wanted to go back to her and Queen Victoria agreed even though she became very fond of her ‼️
The Queen became her God
Mother and paid for all her education and Sarah came to visit the Queen very often‼️
While with the FORBES and in 1851 Forbes died and at the same time Princess Sarah
Health began to fail she developed a terrible chronic cough it was caused by the
Weather in England so the
Queen had her sent to Sierra
Leone from the age of 8 to 12
But Sarah was very unhappy
So Queen had her returned in 1855 to live with a well to do middle class family named
Schoen and in 1862 she attended Princess Vickys
Wedding the RF never lost track of her ‼️
At the age of 19 she married a wealthy businessman older than her he was also from
Yoruba they had a huge
Wedding in Brighton attended by Blacks and Whites after which she had moved to
Africa with her husband and had 3 children and named one after Queen Victoria her other children Arthur and Stella ‼️
She made trips to England to see the Queen with little
Vicky and became her God
Mother too and also paid for her education‼️
Sarah's last trip to see the Queen was in 1867 because she had been very sick for years and st the age of 37
She died in 1880 of Tuberculosis in Madeira‼️
When the Queen heard of the
Passing of her Godmother it saddened her greatly ‼️
Thus the story of PRINCESS
SARAH‼️‼️
So nice to see the Queen had a kind heart and adopting a black child the Queen made a statement.
What a wonderful story. To bad the British Navy does not get enough credit for ending Slavery and Islam does not get enough criticism for it's disgraceful role in slavery.
It's just soo terrible to think an African person could be treated with kindness back then?

Romanticing the trafficking and gentrification of this young African girl is heartbreaking to see. And to then even take her name, something so sacred and important in many African cultures. Also this narrative that she was treated like "family". In a country like the UK, especially at that time, I doubt there was a second that she wasn't reminded that she could never truly be family. If you haven't already, please watch the movie "Belle", which is based on the true story of a girl of colour being brought up in a white British household. It's still quite romanticized, but it also shows some painful and important truths. Definitely worth a watch!
