- The exercise, taking place in the North Atlantic on Sept. 7, 2022, was the premier joint and allied force maritime strike demonstration in which naval and air forces from the U.S. and U.K worked together to exercise lethal, multi-domain, long range maritime strike capabilities.
The participants, assigned to U.S. Naval Forces Europe USS Arleigh Burke, U.S. Air Forces Europe F15s, along with the Royal Navy HMS Westminster and Royal Air Force Typhoon fighters, sank the decommissioned guided missile frigate ex-USS Boone to develop combined proficiency in tactics, targeting, and live-firing against a surface target at sea. Using modern technologies such as the VBAT vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft system (UAS), as well as surface, maritime, and satellite systems, personnel were able to identify a potential threat, determine an appropriate response, make a decision, and eliminate that threat.
Took something out of me seeing this. She was my first ship when I joined the USN. Served on her from 1992 to 1997. A great ship and shipmates and so many memories just went to see Davey Jones. RIP girl, you took me to places that I had never imagined I would see. Retired HTC Coen🇺🇸🙏
Hey Shannon, how are ya brother? Breaks my heart seeing this…
I Served with you Shannon we worked in the same shop.
To be fair to USS Boone, she took some serious punches before finally sinking.
1989 to 1991, Retired HMC (SW), my last ship.
Boone was sunk off the coast of Campbeltown, Scotland which was my last shore command. I ran a clinic at RAF Machrihanish there by myself; 1991-1993.
That was my dad’s ship. He served on that ship back in the 1990s USS Boone
I was there from 1992 to 1997. Great guys served on her. God bless you and your family and thank him for his service. HT2 Shannon Coen, I posted on here ☝ up above. I retired in 2012 as HTC...if he knew me. Happy Holidays and be safe.
Those US Perry class FFGs are built so strong !!!
I'm sure the all steel Burke class DDGs are even stronger and can take many hits !! 👍
I was a plankowner. My home and family 1982-84. ASW Officer - great crew - STGC Hammer, STG1 Penick, STG2 Hedspeth and all the rest whose names escape me just now. We took the "A" first time up.
Better to serve as a training target than be sold for scrap.
My ship, USS Aubrey Fitch FFG-34, was one of two FFG-7 class ships that were scrapped, the other USS Stark FFG-31. All the rest were either sunk like the Boone, or sold off to foreign navies, like USS Clark FFG-11, my brother served on that ship.
I was stationed on her from 1998 to March of 1999 as her last Navy Postal Clerk. She was a great ship with great shipmates. Went to the Caribbean and did a 6 month cruise to the Mediterranean Sea. Sure wish I could have seen her one last time before she was sent to Davey Jones.
I was one of the laborers responsible for the hazardous oily clean up before the SINKEX. USS Boone was docked at the Philadelphia shipyard. The Navy couldn't sink it and was returned back to Philadelphia shipyard. I was allowed to go in to see the damages. It was an awesome experience.
BTW, it was before the final sink of the USS Boone. 9-24-2022
I served on the USS BOONE from 94 to 96. Sorry to see her sunk.
Sad to see an OHP class frigate go down. I served onboard the Oliver Hazard Perry from 93 to 96.
This was my ship in the reserves, hard to watch her die.
i hope fish were fine
