a total joke that Julia Roberts won an Oscar - she cant and didnt compare with the exceptional performance of Ellen Burstyn - what a terrible error shameful academy
Julia Roberts has been making movies since the late 80's. She has 5 hits under her belt in all that time. Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, Notting Hill, My Best Friend's Wedding and Erin Brockovich. I can remember a few days before the debut of "My Best Friend's Wedding", film critic Gene Shallit, said this better be a hit, because she hasn't had one in 5 yrs, and if it isn't her career wouldn't be going anywhere any longer.

Bette Davis should've won for 'All about Eve' (maybe a tie with Gloria Swanson would've been fair) and/or ' What ever happened to Baby Jane', Judy Garland for 'A star is born' and Glenn Close for 'Fatal attraction'!
Viola is amazing. She wows me every time. She had 15 minutes in "Doubt" as Mrs. Miller and she did the next-to-impossible; she stole a scene right away from Meryl Streep.
Going farther back, I would have awarded the 1946 Oscar to Jennifer Jones for "Duel in the Sun." Her role was demanding and transformative compared to winner Olivia de Havilland for "To Each His Own."
@@Loulou-sr3tk You're right, just in a different film. Geraldine was given that Oscar purely because she had been nominated so many times without a win.

Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a day is fantastic and she is such a dear wonderful lady America can be so proud of. God bless her and give her health and joy.
The one that isn't listed is the classic one were Joan Crawford actively campaigne against "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane". Joan not only successfuly sidelined Bette's Best Actress Oscar, she also accepted for Anne Bancroft who won for The MIracle Worker.
Despite Joan's spitefulness, Anne Bancroft deserved to win that Oscar for THE MIRACLE WORKER. In fact, Anne's portrayal of Annie Sullivan goes down for me as THE BEST performance - most deserving - to win THE BEST ACTRESS OSCAR. I had to watch it come to that conclusion. See her and judge for yourself!
Chris N Joan didn’t have that kind of influence, all she did was ask the nominees who couldn’t attend to the ceremony if she could accept the award on their behalf, Anne Bancroft and Geraldine Page both agreed, Bette was the favourite, but favourites don’t always win, in many ocasiones they split votes with another one and then a third one wins, Bette was so shocked she didn’t win that she convinced herself and everyone that Joan Crawford had campaigned against her.
Even before I clicked on the video, I was like "I bet Cher for Moonstruck is gonna be on here since everyone fights for Glenn Close" since half of the people commented how Glenn Close should have won on Cher's Oscar speech vid.
Glenn Close was brilliant in Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liaisons and should have won for both but the Academy members are stupid- they won’t reward an exceptional performance if the character isn’t a loveable heroine or victim of crime. Emma Stone winning over Isabelle Huppert in Elle was just insane.
Not always. Maggie Smith deservedly won for "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" playing a very a less than loveable character who brought on her own victimization.
Emma didn't deserve the win, but neither did Huppert, who had way better performances on her belt. Amy Adams should have won that year, if not her then Ruth Negga or Natalie Portman.
Emma Stone (lalaland) over Isabelle Hupert (Elle) Julianne Moore (Still Alice) over Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) Brie Larson (the Room ) over Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) Geraldine Page (TheTrip To Bountiful) Over Whoopi Goldberg (Color Purpure ) Frances Mcdormand (Fargo) over Brenda Blettyn (Secret and lies ) Faye Dunaway (Network ) over Sissy Spacek ( Carrie) Jodie Foster (The Acussed) over Glenn Close (Dangerous liaisons)
I like Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings, and for the rest of them I think they all deserve their Oscars but for different performances. Emma Stone - Birdman Reese Witherspoon - Wild Sandra Bullock - Gravity Penelope Cruz - Almost anything she has done with Almodovar
This is brilliant. Thank you fr sharing your opinions and thank you for calling out the Grace Kelly/Judy Garland debacle. As Groucho Marx said the nght after those Oscars: "This was the biggest robbery since Brinx!"
I completely agree that Judy got ripped off. I'm not sure Grace Kelly even deserved to be nominated. The famous dressing room scene alone should have won her the Oscar. She got hosed.
Unfortunately it can be a popularity contest and Judy had burned a few bridges over the years due to the drug issues I think that played into it and yes Judy was totally 💯 robbed
I really wish Glenn had won for "Dangerous Liaisons" too. I loved John Malkovich in it but Glenn's performance is the one I really remember and still notice when I watch it.
I have to disagree with the Halle Berry entry. All the actresses in this category that were excellent, but Halle deserved that Oscar. Her performance was amazing and extended far beyond the few minutes of the love scene with Billy Bob Thornton. She fought for that role and put her heart and soul into that role. The scene alone when she discovered that Billy Bob's character was the guard who participated in her husband's execution ran the gamut of every emotion one could feel. JMO
Thank you I so agree she did two really great performances just about then monsters ball and introducing Dorothy Dandrige about another Oscar nominee who in her case was robbed of the Oscar
@@kellicoffman8440 actually, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge was a TV movie and Halle was nominated for and won the Emmy for lead actress. That was definitely another well deserved award as well.

oacaparov Cher won because she delivered a brilliant performance too, which was appreciated by audiences and critics alike.. If someone thinks Glenn Close (great actress) wasn't deserving, it's their opinion and they are entitled to their opinion..
Cher's Oscar was a courtesy Oscar for losing for the film Mask. Glenn def deserved to win over Cher. Her performance was brilliant. Cher's just good. Cher didn't really have to stretch to get into her character's skin.I saw both films and have always felt that Glenn should have won.
I always thought that Barbara Stanwyck should have won in 1944 for 'Double' Indemnity' over Ingrid Bergman for 'Gaslight'. Even though I adore Bergman.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You remembered Judy Garland. That's the number one best actress Oscar mistake, in my opinion. Grace Kelly had no business holding the Oscar. But you're Paltrow number one reminded me of that terrible mistake.
Jasper, I agree that Judys got hosed, big time hosed. So did the song, THE MAN THAT GOT AWAY. It lost to Three coins in a fountain. Nice song, but, The Man That Got Away was awsome. James should have won for best actor, George should have won best director, and Mr. Warner should have won for biggest IDIOT.
I agree with many of the “mistakes” on this list. Jodie Foster in “The Accused” over Glenn Close in “Dangerous Liaisons” was also a mistake IMHO, as was Marlee Marlin in “Children of a Lesser God” over Sigourney Weaver in “Aliens.” It’s all Monday morning quarterbacking, and we non-voters don’t get caught up in the politics.
"The Ferryman" you hit it on the nose, each one! Nice. Carey Mulligan blew me away in "AN EDUCATION"; a performance that stays with you. It's that subtle, but masterful, performance by Mulligan that makes me want to see her in anything. Witherspoon, Bullock, Roberts, Berry all seemed like political wins.
I actually think it would have been great if Judy Garland and Dorothy Dandridge had tied that year. Both gave stellar performances, Judy in "A Star Is Born" and Dorothy in "Carmen Jones."

oacaparov I so don't think Nicole Kidman deserved an Oscar as her performance as Satin wasn't that riveting. Sorry. But then again thsts just my opinion
oacaparov i love in the bedroom , those performances were done so brilliant.
I still think that jennifer lawrence winning over emmanuelle riva was a joke
Jennifer Lawrence grosses me out!
Jennifer Lawrence should have won an Oscar for Winters Bone.
@@ADRHYN natalie portman deserved it
Ellen Burstyn in “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” over Gena Rowlands in “A Woman Under the Influence”. - definitely worth a mention!
When I watched Transamerica, I was deeply touched by Felicity Huffman's flawless performance. She should have won.
fernanda montenegro is the one who should've won over gwyneth !!!
Glen Close for Fatal Attraction over Cher's corny performance
KrueMann1992 i saw that movie and it's so underrated!
KrueMann1992 Nobody saw that movie "Anna", but anyone who did will NOT forget Sally Kirkland. I don't cry watching movies, but Sally moved me to tears! Cher had half of Hollywood pulling for her, Glenn and Sally didn't stand a chance.
luis grant I agree but I feel for Close. She has been ignored for so long by the academy and Streep gets nominated every year. If Streep sneezes she will get an Oscar nomination. Hollywood politics.
liberal Hollywood made their choice
Glenn Close has been overlooked way too many times.....
DIANA ROSS
Lady Sings the Blues...
film Critics praised DIANA ROSS Performance in her 1st Featured film, also that year Diana Ross became the 2nd BlackActress to be Nominated for BEST ACTRESS.
Diana Ross in Lady Sings the Blues and Cicely Tyson for Sounder. Ist time 2 Black Actresses nominated in the same category. BEST ACTRESS.....
Isabell Huppert was robbed too ... She should have won over Emma Stone
the fact that amy adams still hasn't won an oscar angers me
Burstyn was phenomenal in requiem for a dream
Bette Davis should've won for 'All about Eve' (maybe a tie with Gloria Swanson would've been fair) and/or ' What ever happened to Baby Jane', Judy Garland for 'A star is born' and Glenn Close for 'Fatal attraction'!
Ellen burstyn was definitely robbed. That award for the Exorcist she was amazing.
I still think Viola Davis was robbed...she should have won for The Help.
I totally agree!!!!
Whoopi Goldberg shoulda won for "The Color Purple" over Geraldine Paige for "A Trip to Bountiful"
That was due to overdue factor..
Are you crazy... Geraldine Page gave one of the best performance by an actrice
@@Loulou-sr3tk You're right, just in a different film. Geraldine was given that Oscar purely because she had been nominated so many times without a win.
Most people who think Whoopi should've won have never bothered to see Page in A Trip to Bountiful. I never thought Whoopi was the best actress in her own movie. I thought that honor went to Margaret Avery. Imo
@@josephcarlisle1943 I agree. I've seen both movies, and A Trip to Bountiful just didn't move me. Which has withstood the test of time? I really think The Color Purple and Whoopi's performance were far more moving and inspiring. Geraldine Page's Oscar was like Paul Newman's for The Color of Money... overdue Oscar-syndrome
Ellen Burstyn is simply amazing. She’s terrific in everything she does.
BIGGEST MISTAKE: 1981....Mary Tyler Moore did not get the oscar for Ordinary People....she was amazing!! Sissy Spacek did a great job....but Moore's performance was a perfect 10!!!
I agree with this 100% except in my opinion Judy Holliday beating Gloria Swanson and Bette Davis is my #1 all time oscar fuck-up.
Agreed - Bette should have won in 1950. Such a shame that she didn't!
You are so right
Yup!
Yep . . should have been a tie between Bette and Gloria!! Both were perfection . .
Well Mia farrow I think is the most underrated actress in Hollywood ,she should have won for Rosemary's baby, nominated for broadway danny rose ,and purple rose of Cairo
I love her in Broadway Danny Rose! What a wonderful performance!
Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a day is fantastic and she is such a dear wonderful lady America can be so proud of. God bless her and give her health and joy.
Gena Rowlands is superb!!!!
Sandra Bullock didn’t deserve it for The Blind Side but definitely should have won for Gravity
@@andressegui1236 yeah, that sounds more plausible than Joan actually campaigning against Bette. But then again, who knows?
Even before I clicked on the video, I was like "I bet Cher for Moonstruck is gonna be on here since everyone fights for Glenn Close" since half of the people commented how Glenn Close should have won on Cher's Oscar speech vid.
Totally agree with Michelle Williams' role for My Week with Marilyn! She should've won that race!
You missed a big one. Sissy Spacek won for Coal Miner's Daughter. It should have gone to Mary Tyler Moore for Ordinary People.
Emma Stone (lalaland) over Isabelle Hupert (Elle)
Julianne Moore (Still Alice) over Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl)
Brie Larson (the Room ) over Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn)
Geraldine Page (TheTrip To Bountiful) Over Whoopi Goldberg (Color Purpure )
Frances Mcdormand (Fargo) over Brenda Blettyn (Secret and lies )
Faye Dunaway (Network ) over Sissy Spacek ( Carrie)
Jodie Foster (The Acussed) over Glenn Close (Dangerous liaisons)
Judy Garland and Gena Rowlands should have won oscars
Both ladies won honorary Oscars.
Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon, Penelope Cruz and Sandra Bullock don’t deserve the Oscar.
Penelope Cruz does deserve. Watch Volver. She is amazing. Also your list should include Gwyneth.
I like Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings, and for the rest of them I think they all deserve their Oscars but for different performances.
Emma Stone - Birdman
Reese Witherspoon - Wild
Sandra Bullock - Gravity
Penelope Cruz - Almost anything she has done with Almodovar
Emma Stone in "La La Land" (And I love her) over Isabelle Huppert in "Elle"
If Halle Berry did not deserve the Oscar it was because SISSY SPACEK deserved the Oscar, NOT NICOLE
This is brilliant. Thank you fr sharing your opinions and thank you for calling out the Grace Kelly/Judy Garland debacle. As Groucho Marx said the nght after those Oscars: "This was the biggest robbery since Brinx!"
Jessica Chastain should’ve won for ZeroDarkThirty also ViolaDavis for TheHelp.
Btw Reese deserved the Oscar
I think who should have won an Oscar in 1999 should be Fernanda Montenegro for Central Station
Jennifer Lawrence nvr deserved tht oscar ...nvr evr
We all know why Gwenith Paltrow won! HW! LOL
Shanna Bol lick lick lick
It was all bcoz of that Harvey swinestein that cate got robbed big-time
I agree with Judy Garland and Cate Blanchett
I agree with Judy but would opt for Fernanda Montenegro over Paltrow, which is not to say that Cate was brilliant in "Elizabeth." She was.
I totally agree with #1. Cate was amazing in Elizabeth.
Totally agree. Cher acting as herself and Glenn Close giving a masterclass in acting.
Emily Watson over Frances Mccdormand (1997)
Viola Davis Or Carey Mulligan over Frances Mccdormand (2021)
Bette Midler hands down should have won for "The Rose:!!!
Glenn Close in 'Dangerous Liasons' . Absolutely. Take away all the trappings, focus on the story and you're left with a shattering performance.
There is no doubt in my mind that some Oscars are bought not won.
I agree on many of these. But Cher gave an amazing performance. Close did the same but wasn't in my opinion more deserving. I think the biggest robbery was gwyneth paltrow and helen hunt
Glenn Close gave the most brilliant performance of her year, I dont know the reason why Cher won.
oacaparov Cher won because she delivered a brilliant performance too, which was appreciated by audiences and critics alike.. If someone thinks Glenn Close (great actress) wasn't deserving, it's their opinion and they are entitled to their opinion..
Cher deserved to win over Glenn!
Actually in 1987 i was rooting for Holly Hunter in Broadcast News to win , but as Glenn she lost.
And Barbara Stanwyck never won an Oscar. Can you believe it?
@@jeanettesmith765 That's harder to believe than any actress in the history of the Academy Awards, never a bad performance and alot of great ones.
Sandra , Julia deserves ❤
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You remembered Judy Garland. That's the number one best actress Oscar mistake, in my opinion. Grace Kelly had no business holding the Oscar. But you're Paltrow number one reminded me of that terrible mistake.
Correct. Kellys didn't even deserve a nomination, let alone a win.
Ellen Burstyn won an Oscar for the wrong film ( Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore)
Marlee Matlin was so deserved.
@@viarach1177 As I said, "IMHO." Cheers.
Also Judy Garland should have one for a Star is Born!! Grace Kelly barely moved her face!
I actually think it would have been great if Judy Garland and Dorothy Dandridge had tied that year. Both gave stellar performances, Judy in "A Star Is Born" and Dorothy in "Carmen Jones."
Ellen Burstyn should have won she was excellent in the Exorcist hands down. I love her.
