This issue is way too common, considering older consoles like the PS4 may very well be still alive since the release. I’m low-key hoping this is brought to the EU the same way as the Nitendo joycon drift and they force Sony to offer free out of warranty repairs instead of robbing the consumers for their own incompetence
Disc driver just stopped working today, first day owner, just stopped without reason!
@@johnzero7397 This appears to have happened a lot recently. Something tells me they fucked it up with a buggy software update because there ain’t no way it’s hardware if it happens all of a sudden at the same time and especially on new consoles too

Good find, have one on the desk same issue - rollers REALLY dirty and scratched to hell. Assuming it over loaded the board and the 'fuse' saved any further damage :P
Saw that issue alot witht he PS4 drives. Rollers slipping and killing the fuses.

Great video. My PS5 just started doing the exact same thing just under a week ago, won’t read any discs. Appears Sony wants $250 to fix it have not decide whether to send it to them or find someone local who does repairs.

Same issue for me. Maybe your credit card offers an extended warranty? Got lucky that the Visa I used extended the warranty by 1 year, so currently in the process of filing the claim. Have a feeling a lot of these drives are going to suffer the same fate, so hopefully that's an option for some people.

Thank you! This solved my issue, thought for a moment I had a faulty unit. Once I removed the cables beneath the lens it started working again.
What cables?
@@Portal2Fan1234 the flex one, which is underneath the lens as shown in the second part of the video. Just remove and reinserted it and it worked.

My discs arent even being recognized. I dont hear the spinning of any disc i insert. It takes the discs in ejects em out perfectly just wont spin them up. I dont even get the CD icon up top.

I have a problem when I insert/eject disk, I have a crunch sound. I think the problem is the small engine which turn the two entry rolls (not enough power). If I use manual ejection, I have no crunch problem.
I just buy a new PS5 drive with shell, and whant to know if I need to invert full controler electronic card with original ?

I tried to change the whole disk module same problem then I changed the disk board same problem, it says can't recognize the disk and make sure it's not damage dirty and that it's not inserted upside down. I tried different DVD, game etc. same problem any idea?

I just bought a brand new cd ps5 , put hogwarts in it, and the cd icon didn't show, plus there was two loud clicks coming from the cd itself, what do you think it could be please.

Yeah all info is in the video.. None of my videos are intended to be a step by step tutorial but ... basically swap the control IC over.
My PS5 is doing the exact same thing, the same sound, also in the laser motor, i wil try to check the flex but for the repair you did i have no tools or ability to do that kind of soldering, im thinking of just buying a full replacement disk drive unit I found in Amazon
Remember the board from your drive will need to be transfered to the new drive.
What caused the sound at 9:18 ? Im having this same problem and dont know what i did incorrectly after taking apart the drive.

I have a weird case...mine isnt recognising SOME discs. The same discs do play, and the same discs don't. Its not an issue with the discs though as they play in my PS4. I also have a brand new PS5 game that my PS5 wont recognise. It plays normal DVDs and blueray DVDs fine too. I have tried everything I can think of software wise. Do you think it could be a hardware issue even though some play and some dont? Is there a different reading mechanism for discs that are already loaded on the console? It seems like games that are on the console are generally the discs that are recognised but then there are a couple that still dont so i am at a loss. Please halp :'(
My PS5 purchased January 2021 seems to have the same issue you described. The disk doesn’t spin up fast enough to read Blu-ray’s so it gives me the unsupported disk error… It reads DVD’s just fine though. I’m so pissed, I hardly used the drive and I’m not about to give Sony $230 to fix it. I’m in the US otherwise I’d hit you up for a repair.
Sounds like it may just need the laser replaced. The fact it read DVD's is the tell tail sign.

Seems like thats alot of people's issue the disk drive or some sort issue associated with it lol.... and right out of warranty to lol, also barely use the drive, but good info, seems i have to send mine in sadly, cleaned the lens and lubed up the rollers and most likely the chip issue... just odd it would go out when barely used...... oh well... 1st world problems....

From the start when installing games the the PS5 disc drive was noisy,I mean noisy and LOUD vibrations happened all the time lying horizontal. I will try this:

Hi the board in the BR drive has a renesas ic that is married to the APU on the motherboard. So swaping the board will not work. Thinking mine is suffering from the same issue (makes the rapid clicking noise and unable to read discs). At the end, you mentioned even the donor unit was resolved by fiddling around with the connections a bit while the disc was in right? Suggesting it was more of a physical clearance issue with the sled? Sorry if I'm completely off base. If this was the case though, I'm wondering if I might be able to achieve a similar effect without opening up everything?
In this occasion it was a bad controller IC on the board. I almost abandonned the filming of the vid as I was at a los of the cause. but replacing the IC sorted the issue.

Plz READ I just got one and when I try to put a PS4 disc inside it doesn't let me put it in sometimes it goes in but then doesn't read at all. I did software update and everything but the disc drive just doesn't let me put it in. Why did you swap the IC? Wouldn’t it have been easier to just install the other motherboard you had?
The boards are married to the APU and other IC's. They can't swapped easily.
I had this issue when I first got my ps5, I just kept retrying , putting the disc in and ejecting , then after a long time it some how showed up, then when I was copying the game every few seconds it kept getting an error and I had to keep
Clicking resume again and again, till I got the game installed, and all of a sudden again a year later I can’t read the disc again
Might just need a new laser.

Mine has this issue I feel, worked fine yday woke up and the same little clicking noise and an attempt to eject, guess itl have to go back to Sony (again) and I had issues previously with it aswel!

Hey, I replaced my bluray laser but now it won't read anything. The disc icon that normally show up when it tries to read the disc won't even show up.
I hope you kept the old drive? You'll need to swap the boards over because the Renesas IC on it is married to the mainboard.
Its probably the new update that came out is the reason why probably

Hello! I'm from Brasil and have the same problem with unreadable disc. I had an accident at home and water entered the disc drive. Since then, it cannot read discs. I took to repair and we think is the laser, it its difficult to obtain a new laser around here, but Iám trying. Have you found any similar situation with water? Could it be the laser?
Hey I've been having similar issues and though you could shed some light. My ps5 reads disks when it wants to. About 50 % of the time it doesn't read it and says unsupported disk or can't read. It tries and sounds like it's reading a disk and it's spinning up, then sounds like it slows down and gets quieter. It keeps doing this nonstop until I eject it. I opened and cleaned any dust. It's not the disk it happens on every game even new ones. After taking the disk in and out it will work most likely. I don't hear grinding just like it's revving up to boot up a game. At a lost and don't want to pay a lot to sent it to Sony if it's a simple issue. Any help would be appreciated. Ty

I have to restart mine everytime I put a disc in for it to read. It's brand new and only read disc the first few times and now it's a restart everytime I want to play a game.
Maybe take it back to the store or exercise your warranty?
Not sure if I have this problem, replacement drive not working (with original board). Drives take the disk but never fully spin, no error code is posted. Any other ideas or way to confirm the IC has gone?
Happy to do my own repairs but wouldn’t want to solder as only have a basic £10 one, don’t think that would be good enough for this
Could just be the laser. This video was a uncommon issue. TBH I could have done the video a lot better.

I think I may have the same problem. The disc isn't spinning. In my case it makes a first try; it can't hold the spinning. Then it would try to spin again.
Could it be the motor itself? Should I replace the same piece as you in your first try?

@@thirsterforhistory I've bought the same piece he replaces at the start. I'm still waiting for it to arrive home though; I think I'll be able to tell you if the replacement fixed it for me or not in a couple of days, as it has arrived to my country a couple of hours ago. I think it won't work but who knows, it's worth the try at least.

Mine has done this from day one. Recently bought Final Fantasy 16, stuck it in and gave me the Unreadable Disc error. Same with 4k HDR blu-ray discs. Plays DVDs just fine.
I did do a Safe Mode database rebuild, which got it reading my new game, but still wouldn't read my 4k movie. Frustrating to say that least.
I would recommend sending it off under warranty.
How do you tell if its the laser or not?
The clicking from the laser sled was a big warning sign for me... TBH.. This was a weird issue and I found the issue by accident. Only when I pressed on the drive PCB it sprang into life, thant directed me to the stepper driver IC.
My ps5 stopped reading ps5 discs randomly after less than a year. I threw in A ps4 game and it started installing and installed the updates but halfway thru game install it keeps getting errors that i hit resume on and it repeats. Ive tried safe mode cache clean. Safe mode rebuild. Safe mode restart. Tried dvd disc cleaning discs wit brushes. This thing never had a problem. Now any ps5 disc say unreadable disc.
I'll pay whatever u think is fair to have u repair it. I think Sony put bad disc drives in these to sell more invisible digital games. I like my collection physical. I like having the box and disc. Should I replace disc drive or are they formatted to the ps they come with? I've been schooled in electronics and soldering. Much rather send u my console and see what u think. Hogwarts and Jedi survivor worked last week. Today, it only read a ps4 disc but couldnt finish install. What should I do? I'll pay for your help. Lmk

My ps5 is less than a year old and it only reads my ps4 discs and gives me the unreadable disc screen when I put in a ps5 disc. So frustrating
Playstation warranty, if the ps5 is less than a year old and hasnt had the sticker inside removed, you could get a free replacement
I bought mine yesterday brand new and all the games (for ps5 ofc) can't load and I'm thinking the console doesn't read them cuz there's no sound when I insert the disk. Just one click and nothing

My PS5 disc drive will read DVDs but not Blue Ray discs. Does that make it more likely that replacing the laser sled will work?
This fix is not the normal repair. Disk reading issue are 99.8% the laser or kids sticking randon stuff in the drive.
Will opening the bluray drive and cleaning it with a rubbing alcohol work bro

Most likley the laser since it reading. This one wasn't reading disks at all.

@9:36 it's not the laser now at 11:50he replaces the PCB board, who knows if any of this will last. Conclusion PS5 vibrates too much and disc drives are too noisy - poor quality by Sony & PS5 @14:20 original laser in with new motor control IC. That is how my PS5 always sounded from the beginning it vibrates way too much! @17:20 the laser from SONY is trash some cog slippage from PS5 garbage - I can't believe how bad & noisy Sony PS5's are.
Just fixed my first ps5 hdmi port and now I find out the disc drive dowsnt read discs....

@@UberMicroRepairs yes I took a look at the drive and found nothing that was bad and the disc goed in and out and it makes like a printer noise when it's trying to read the disc so it doesn't spin up it just tries to read or it could be the motor but it makes a reading sound.
My guy was happy with the hdmi working again and the last owner was an insane gamer. He played farming Simulator that he downloaded for 1300 hours. I took a few strolles around his farm yesterday and impressive stuff he build xD

@@jc2367good to hear, I’m try an replace mine at some point whenever I got some down time.
Seems this issue just hit mine last week. The sounds at the starting test are the same. it will only read a DVD and only play past the first 5ish seconds before it has to spin it, and does unreadable disc on all blu rays. this is beyond my ability and mine is out of warranty. So i will likely have to buy another transfer my data and then sell this one as digital only or to w someone with the means to fix it.
Chances are it just needs a laser replacment.
