I agree. In '97 when I saw it I was blown away by the writing. Since then, I've watched this film at least a dozen times per year. Fabulous love story!
I remember watching this movie a while ago for the first time with my family and in this scene after their kiss my dad was like : ''Did you see him cry?" ... I never noticed his watery eyes and face because of happy crying after kissing the woman of his life until watching this scene again ❤️ You can see it in 0:44 🥺

Kay.. this is romance. He was so confident in all the scenes before this, sorta showing off. I love how she comes to him in this moment, when he's frazzled and a bit insecure.
That look on her mother's face at the end spoke volumes! Later, she goes and talks with her grandson at the book shop and shows barely-contained contempt, if not hatred. Lastly, when Dora rides home with her for the birthday party, she does not seem surprised at the mess or the missing family members.
I will always believe that the mom helped orchestrate the capture. Evil woman!

Guido was a goofy genius savage! He dead won the heart of this mans bride took her away on a horse while unintentionally getting the last laugh by giving him the champagne bottle that caused the egg to fall on his head. Not to mention that he is an incredible husband and father.

I know it's just a tiny detail but I always crack up because of the guy saluting for the fucking cake. xD
It is an "Ethiopian cake". It was a symbol of the victories of Italian imperialism and a pride of Mussolini's regime. That fascist is paying homage to the regime's policy, not just a cake.

I bought a copy, it sure is a roller coaster of emotions. In my mind I have a slightly different ending.

Anyone knows why the guy at 1:11 heils the cake, and why he kept the salute the whole time, even when Guido entered with the horse? I know it must be some fanatical fascist bullshit but still it's very weird
This is certainly an hyperbole, an exageration which intends, in my opinion, to highlight the stupidity and the shameful pandering of many people who were fascist just for the advantages they could get in their careers, and not because they really trusted in fascism and in Mussolini; but in fascist Italy, bullshits (almost) like this were not actually so uncommon 😞
