  • A short video of my limited knowledge on this fur sewing machine. I cleaned this machine up, stuck it in a modified treadle, and managed to get it to sew fairly nicely.

    Very interesting stuff- I saw a General Electric machine once that was the SewHandy, and I now own a Featherweight, but a 222, so free arm as well... Singer also made a rather similar fur sewing machine earlier- I have a 46K49 from 1920, looks incredibly similar. I am in Australia btw.

      There is a Singer Model 176 (Look at around 1 minute into the video) shown in this movie that is almost identical to the Osann. Singer must have made a variety of fur sewing machines!

    What size needles are you using for the Osann?

    • @KevinPinkerton

      I will be honest with you. I have only sewed a couple of samples with the machine and I have an assortment of needle sizes. The needle that is in the machine has a rather large eye, and I have some size 11, 12 and 14 size needles that I must have selected from. Knowing me, I probably chose the largest eye size which would be the 11. I have some size 20 needles and they are extremely tiny eyes.

    I just acquired an Osann in great cosmetic condition, but there is no chain/footpedal to activate the jaws. Could you send a photo of how/where this is attached inside the machine?? Thanks so much for your video !!

      I put some photos of where the chain hooks up. Check here drive.google.com/drive/folders/18aaguTD79OYtLdpX3BHMr7m3YshGGhSf?usp=sharing
      The photos are from a Singer version (see video) but it is identical to the Osann.

      I made a plywood top with a slit in it for the belt. I use the clear belts from McMaster Carr for all of my treadles. Look for part p/n 6567K1, it is called Quick-Connect Hollow-Core Round Belting 3/16" diameter. You also need some of the connector barbs which are on the same page. It grabs very well, and is easy to shorten. We have at least 8 to 10 treadles and they all use that belt. The treadle is a Singer 31-15 industrial treadle irons. There is a knee bar which I have connected to make it work to open the circular plate. If you treadle already, you probably use the whole foot on the peddle and the front part of the other foot on the bottom of the peddle. This gives you more control over keeping the machine sewing (I think). So find yourself a treadle Singer model 31 on craigslist and just plan on throwing the wood away. Or perhaps making a replacement center top part and leaving all of the nice wing leaves they have (left side and back side).

      @@KevinPinkerton I am so grateful with you ¡ See, a few years ago I tried to do this, I failed on the part that open the jaws to press the two leather or fur parts, it did not work for me. I used a normal regular Singer treadle. Not industrial, but I have one. I made a pedal of wood, to attach to it, but it was not strong enough to open the jaws. But I know has worked for you. So I will keep trying. Regards from Chile, South America ¡

      @@susanarodriguez7067 , it may be that the knee bar hardware was from another treadle. Over the years I have accumulated lots of parts from old junk machines. You are welcome and thanks for welcome yourself! My daughter currently lives in Mexico and leads some tour groups to places down in South America. She recently ran a tour in Guatemala. • @KevinPinkerton
      @KevinPinkerton  3 года назад +1

      The official needle from Singer is 176x5, but it also is known as one of the following: 01:05, 292, 292A, 292BP, 392, AIx1 and you can easily find the needles (new) at Bonis Parts, or probably ebay if you keep your eye out. I just searched ebay for Bonis fur sewing needles and found some 292A. bonisparts.com/sewing-needles/

      @@KevinPinkerton Hi Kevin! Sorry to bother you again. I bought the 292a needle, they do not fit the machine, they are short and much thinner. There is another option for the Singer 176-22 ?

    • @KevinPinkerton
      @KevinPinkerton  3 года назад

      @@backbaytailors168 , the old Singer needle for your machine was 176 x 3, and the old Singer catalog number for the needle wa 1011-02. I have a Singer 176-21 and I am not sure what the differences are, but all of the Singer 176 machines used either 176 x 3 or 176 x 5. Here is something the check on your machine. Turn the hand wheel until the needle bar / needle holder is all the way back. Whatever needle you use must sit all the way back inside the circular feeder. On my machine, the Bonis that distance is very, very short. Hence the short needle. Here is the measurements for the 292 or 292A needle that fits in my Singer 176-21. www.organneedle.com/industrie.php?p=AIx1&v=produkt&l=en
