ABOUT THE MUSIC
Commissioned by cellist Thomas Mesa, SEVEN for solo cello (2020) is a tribute to healthcare workers and honors the victims of the global COVID-19 pandemic. "Through the music, I sought to explore the contradiction between solitude and community; that unique emotional complexity precipitated by the overwhelming challenges of 2020. Written in Manhattan, the piece ends with seven bell-like sounds, alluding to the daily 7 PM tribute during the lockdown that occurred in many countries - a moment when we would lay aside our personal challenges, open our windows, and connect with each other to express appreciation for those on the front lines." • A. Award-winning Spanish-born cellist and composer Andrea Casarrubios returns with SEVEN, which features seven of her most recent works. Alongside music for solo cello or cello and piano, this recording features a mesmerizing Chicago Symphony Orchestra commission and culminates in her epic and Piano Quintet. At the heart of this collection lies SEVEN for solo cello, a profound work that received its Carnegie Hall premiere in 2021 and has been performed around the world since. Other highlights of the album include Armadura, inspired by artist Frida Kahlo; Silbo, reflecting the unique beauty of whistled languages; and Mensajes del agua, which traces the patterns found in unpolluted frozen water.
