  • Hello everyone! My name is Jake Carpenter. I was truly blessed to be an actor on the great and important show, A Different World. It was the highlight of my life. It dealt with important issues and was simultaneously so entertaining. I wish there were more shows on the television like this today.
I was so blessed to be given the role of Rick in the episode of A Different World, "Cat's in the Cradle". It is the episode in which Ron and Dwayne encounter three white guys at a Hillman football game, Ron makes a bet (against Dwayne’s protestations), they all end up in a fight, go to campus jail, and are encouraged to work out their differences. I play the white guy with a conscience who apologizes to Dwayne and Ron in the jail cell. I feel like I had been prepared my whole life for that role.
I will never monetize this channel, sell any products, or have any affiliate links here. “I Love A Different World” is purely for the celebration and enjoyment of A Different World, a show that was so important to millions of people worldwide.
If the channel really takes off, I will see how else to add to the channel, such as seeing if some of cast members would be willing to be interviewed about the show and answer your questions. 😊 I hope so.
Full episodes of the entire series are available on Amazon Prime.
Please continue to support the work of the great artists of A Different World in their careers now and into the future, including:

Tisha Campbell did such a wonderful job in this episode. When I saw this when it aired the first time, the scene where Mr. Gaines talked with Josie had me in tears. It was just such a powerful message. There are times when Mr. Gaines sounds like he's a grumpy man, but he really has a heart of gold once you get to know him.

Mr. Gaines was cool. His advice made the show. Tisha was so good that people really thought she had AIDS. That says a lot about her acting. She did a wonderful job The impact is just as real today as it was then.

Tisha Campbell’s acting was phenomenal in this episode. I remember watching this as a kid and feeling so bad for her. Gave me a better understanding of HIV

This episode has haunted me. Its message, unfortunately, remains relevant. Blacks -- gay and straight -- are still disproportionately high among HIV infection and AIDS-related deaths. This episode aired 35 years ago at least but we ( as black people) still haven't fully grasped how to protect ourselves and each other.

I'm a Gen X. This show was popular when I was in middle & high school. Our generation went through not 1 but 2 pandemics; AIDS & COVID-19. If it's one thing that at least I know that I learned, it's that life is so, so, so precious!

This episode was a great learning and teaching tool. For me, to discuss with others. Being involved in health care long-term, I have seen countless numbers of HIV/AIDS cases. And trust, it is not pretty, even though more medicines are available now. It IS your life, and yes, you DO matter. No other human-being has the right and the audacity to dictate to you how significant you are. Choose LIFE.

This was a fantastic educational moment. At a time when America was turning a blind eye to the middle of an epedemic. It's a shame they could not have a black gay man be the student with HIV, but sadly in order for this to fly it had to be a non-threatening female character. America was still far too sexist and homophobic to have much sympathy for gay men who acquire the virus, even though they were the largest demographic and still are today. This was also a crucial time for the episode to air because let's face it, black gay and bisexual men were a large demographic in the U.S south testing positive. Throw in men on the dl who still had relations with women and you have the mess that was AIDS in America. I'm glad today we've gotten over a majority of our stigma towards Queer people. Shows like Queer as Folk, the L Word, and of course POSE are showing proud non-appologetic gay, bi, trans, and other Queer people in the best light. If only we could have gotten over our fears, our ignorance of Gay people and HIV decades sooner.

Making the character with HIV female was intentional, and not simply because of the stigma against gay men. It was done because at the time a common fallacy was that HIV was a gay disease and straight women were not at risk unless they engaged in intravenous drug use, prostitution, or anal sex. Meanwhile, in actuality and to this day, the highest rate of HIV diagnosis is amongst black women. That was the message they were trying to get across. It was an inclusive message that ANYONE gay, straight, dl, male, or female could contract the virus. Listen to what Whitney, Kim, and the othsrs said, and you will see.

@@snich8551 very true abs thank you for reminding me that black women were them and are still Joe at high risk.

They didn't cast a black gay man to avoid the assumption that HIV/AIDS is an exclusively gay virus. Casting a young straight woman who had unprotected sex illustrates that HIV is an issue for everyone who is sexually active.

As long as men are on the DL and dishonest with women so much negativity will stay in the midst of this
