The 135mm GM has the best IQ of any lens I've ever used. At one time I had all of the GM lenses from 14mm to 135mm.

The Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm 2.5 is sharper at aperture 2.5 and 2.8 han the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM.

Very beautiful images! It’s certainly an impressive lens on an exceptional camera. It is cool to see what can be done with “the best of the best” in terms of cameras and optics in this and many other videos on your channel.
I have to make do with an old A-mount Sony ‘Sonnar’ 135 f/1.8 that I use with an LA-EA5 adapter. While I have never had the chance to make direct comparisons, this lens is almost certainly not even close to being a competitor to the GM when it comes to sharpness, microcontrast, bokeh look (is that a pleonasm?), autofocus speed, handling, weight and probably almost all other parameters that you can think of. The A-mount lens does have the advantage of being cheap in today’s second-hand market, however, and on a completely subjective level, I am extremely pleased with the look I get from this lens. The images are definitely usable, even in around A2 size prints, which is the absolute largest I ever have my lab do for me, on rare occasions!
All that doesn’t change the fact that the GM is certainly a lens to dream about 😊

Whats your favorite Glass / Camera combination as of today? Since you have such a beautiful collection there must be one piece which is outstanding the rest.

I have had the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM for 5 years now, it is a very sharp Lens with very good contrast and colors, very nice rendering overall, with a 61 megapixels sensor Camera you can crop a LOT and still get very sharp photo image, I have made crops equivalent to 300+mm Lens for Birds and Wildlife with excellent results, I have used the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM for nearly all kind of different Photography, I like the aperture ring, but I wish the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM was more compact, lighter weight, I always have the Lens Hood mounted, so it demands a lot of space in my camera bag (too much space !), so for a year I have now used my Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm 2.5 (more compact and light weight than Sony) most of the time and only very rarely the Sony. The Voigtländer is sharper at 2.5 and 2.8 than the Sony ! I would buy a Sony "GMC" 135mm 2.8 if Sony made one compact and Light weight and maybe I will get the Zeiss Batis Apo Sonnar 135mm 2.8 T* which is more compact and much more light weight than the Sony ! Looking through the images taken with the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, most photo images are taken with apertures between 2.8 and 5.6, only rarely larger apertures from 1.8 to 2.5 and most of those photos should at least have been aperture 2.8 !!! So no need for aperture 1.8 ! My advice save money, save space and save weight, get fx the Zeiss Batis Apo Sonnar 135mm T* if you do not need an aperture ring or if you like me do not need autofocus, get the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm 2.5 which I very highly can recommend !

The APO Lanthar is not in the same league as the 135 GM for fast-moving subjects (e.g., dogs running at full speed) which is the main reason why many photographers buy this lens. For static or near-static subjects there are many other lenses to consider as you nicely pointed out!

@@cameraprepper7938 Or humans in motion, or group shots from a distance when you want the background to melt away! The point is that there are many use cases where the 135mm f/1.8 GM is a much better choice than the APO Lanthar imho. It pairs very well with my A9M3 and A7CR. That's not to say that the Voigt is no good! If it rings your bell, so be it! However, I get my 135mm "character" images on a budget with vintage Minolta teles.

Nice video but sharpness is not what makes a lens a good lens. You are always using that 20x per video. Even cheap companies can produce a reasonable sharp lens. It's microcontrast that separates the men from the boys . By adding the extra glas , 14 elements 😮, you're killing the microcontrast cause glas is evil.
The DoF might be nice but the image is flat, no pop.
That's why people with knowledge about glass choose among Leica, Zeiss, Voigtlander , but there also some vintage Nikon prime lenses, all with low glass counts , that can give you the pop you want.
Next time you do a video for every time you say SHARP you have to put an euro in a bowl and send the bowl to me every month so I can buy 2 great Leica lenses a month hehehe 😂😅🎉
Don't take it to hard my friend hehe.
    Great weekend

@@mathphotographer It is a great lens no doubt, but since it belongs to the best of the best lenses out there, I would like to have it all.
The problem is, when you have seen great micro contrast, especially in portrait lenses you know what to look for and get spoiled (and in addition, bored with the lesser lenses).
But then again, I don't shoot Sony.
Check Dustin Abbotts test of the lens.
I was over the moon .

I agree, I own the 135mm GM I don't use a lot, I prefer my Leica or S Pro lenses. Even the 35mm GM has better microcontrast than the 135mm GM.
But nowadays, more glass doesn't mean low microcontrast, recent lenses from Panasonic and Leica (24-70mm S Pro, 24-90mm SL, 50mm SL etc) have lot of glass and yet they have excellent microcontrast.
