That was the purpose of posting this video dude. All enlisted trying to get their P status have RUclipsd what a promotion board is. I thought I would give an inside look.

If you’re gonna make the Soldier wear his ASUs, then the board members should also be in ASU.
Either this is a formal procedure or not. Board members are supposed to be judging the Soldier, they should hold themselves to the same standard.

I went to a promo board where one 1sgt was texting away on his phone and another was dipping and spitting in a cup the whole time. “No one is more professional than I” 🙄🙄🙄

I blame both the NCO and who ever his sponsor was. And I agree if the Soldier is in ASU's then the board needs to be in same uniform as well as sponsor
most of the boards are a week out notice, so theres no time to prepare
@@leocasi405 What?!? Sorry, this made my brain hurt. Piss Poor Planning results in Piss Poor Performance. A board is notified a week out So!!! Once your Soldier is in the realm of getting boarded start then. Hell, I had my PFC's studying for the boards. Prep the Soldiers beforehand and no issue.

@Leo Casi you should always have your dress uniform ready. You wear it what, maybe 3 times a year? If you can't afford dry cleaning 4 times a year then you need some finance classes.

I was promoted to E-5 for the simple reason that the Promotion Board met on a Monday morning and I was the only soldier who wasn't hung over.

I’ve never understood why they ask arbitrary questions like “what is protection?” Or “what is a battle?” And expect you to know the word for word definition. How does memorizing definitions make you a good leader? Why not ask how they would handle specific situations with their soldiers, what their mentoring style is for their soldiers, ask them how they would handle given combat scenarios (combat arms), or what makes them feel that they are ready for the next rank? Get to know the individual. Anyone can memorize stuff. Not everyone is a good leader or NCO. Also, this poor kid was probably told the night before that he was going to the board, and had to throw his uniform together and had no time to study properly. His leadership clearly failed him (not properly preparing him for this) and the Army is failing itself by having arbitrary memorization as the standard for promotion.
Half of the impact of the questions is about how confident you give them. So even if you give an answer “incorrectly”, they judge you in how confident you were in your answer and it helps to be confident even if you do not get it completely right
@@lezoomer7324 that’s also a stupid way to judge who the leaders of the Army should be. Being a confident idiot is worse than humbly admitting you don’t know something.
Anyone can memorize stuff, yet they don’t. I don’t disagree that there are scenario questions that can be asked, but promotion boards ought to be a confirmation of what the NCO knows, not a test to see if he should be promoted. If he can’t answer questions of doctrine, if he can’t demonstrate he is a student of his profession, then he has no business being there. The saddest part of this whole clown show, is that this NCO will continue to promote and then emulate this exact same charade when he is a board member someday simply because he doesn’t know any better and he hasn’t seen a better way to do it. And this is why we keep seeing a perpetuation of the same stupid shit.
@@kurtsmith2699 sure. It just seems to me that if memorization must be a part of the board, have them memorize relevant information pertinent to their job. Not arbitrary definitions. Just my opinion.
@@NemeanIndustries I don’t disagree. It should be relevant and pertinent. There are better questions to ask than the definition of a “battle.” However, I also don’t think that that particular question should be off limits. It is the Army, after all, and in the Army we do battles.

This looks like a mock board. Maybe they’re trying their best to prepare him for the real thing. Which could really be helpful.
When I went to the E6 board almost 20 years ago, all three 1SG’s were playing with a mini basketball and hoop while the president of the board CSM starred dead into my eyes like he was gonna eat my soul. I passed lol. My PSG gave me a heads up the board was going to do dumb things to try to break my character and crumble under pressure. Honestly all the boards I attended were basically the same and all my boards I attended were while I was in the Infantry. Maybe we do things different lol. All except the Audie Murphy board! That board was next level! I didn’t even make it past my leaders book review!
Just be confident and look sharp and max your PT scores lol.
1) IAW AR 600-8-19, Board Members must be Senior NCOs. There should not be any SSG’s, especially if given voting rights.
2) The Board Members should be wearing ASU’s if the the Soldier/NCO attending the Promotion Board is in ASUs.
3) The Board Recorder in the back should not be on his phone slouching while a Promotion Board is being conducted. Professionalism should be upheld 24/7.
4) Is the Board President a 1SG? If so, that is a no-go IAW AR 600-8-19. E-8’s are not aloud to preside as Board Presidents. If Board Member is an E-9 or Officer then disregard this. Hard to hear.

Got my hands clammy and sweaty just watching. I'm a PFC about to go to the soldier of the month board soon. I don't like formaly being put on the spot and critiqued. Let me prove my self doing my job and I'm calm cool and collected.

We practiced every day for a week before heading to the board. The chair on its side was my hurdle. In one movement I flipped it upright and took a seat.
Sadly this is one of the worse Board reviews I've seen...
My 36 months were up a year after I made sergeant E-5. So I never did this. I however went before several soldier of the quarter or year boards. The questions were no surprise. How a female soldier wore her belt was not among them. Not impressed. I would like to hear questions on leadership, problem solving. How he would counsel someone with family problems. Get a feel for his military leadership ethos. What a disgrace this board is even as a mock board. This shit will not win wars. Find leaders. Men other men follow.
You had to fo this as an E4 before you were promoted to E5. They didn't just give you your stripes. I know because I did this as a SP4
This is clearly a mock board to prepare this guy (I assume he's already been to board before but hey, it's something to put on the training schedule) and other E-4's. Mock boards are better than nothing, even the Board members are getting some stick time. Personally, I think everyone could've done better ... I have to constantly remind myself that No One is Prefect Like Me!

@@FilamNation App based gig economy companies such as Uber do remote hiring and background checks . Look at how many of those hires turned out to be Rapists ? When I was active duty and met National Guard NCO’s, I can honestly say ALL of them were overweight . Fat . Lack of standards, poor examples to lower ranking soldiers. I’m a firm believer in uniformed standards .

Yeah critiquing irreverent bs like gig lines and creeds and army songs are exactly what should be prioritized over experience, competence, and time served.. So glad I finally took the red pill after 10 years of the dog and pony show they call the Army.

Thanks man! I’ve come to the realization some of the stuff I see as an E-6 in today’s Army may be boring and redundant at times, but if I just put a small amount of it on camera, it will better serve future recruits and service members who want some insight on these sort of things.

This was an awkward one.
When I was boarded. I was told I was being boarded not as a test. But to let me know that I was ready and my leadership was confident that I was ready. I was asked questions. No trick questions. It was so the other NCOs and the BN CSM could see me. I passed. None of what you see here. These boards are totally bull shit.

The first five minutes were probably more appropriate for an E-5 promotion board, not E-6. Lots of time wasted on basic and advanced school-level 670-1 stuff. Should have taken only a minute or two to examine dress and appearance. All board member's behavior was unprofessional and at times, sarcastic. Board member on left's water bottle with all the flair on it probably not appropriate for a proceeding like this. These board members need to be re-trained or replaced.

Ah, the promotion board... Where an Article 15 you got 15 years ago as a Pvt E2 comes back to bite you in the ass and Army uses it as an excuse to not allow you to reenlist. See that way they can kick you to the curb before Uncle Sugar has to pay off on that 20-year pension. You could be an exceptional soldier, technician, manager, and leader but something a trivial as a counseling statement can trip you up a decade after the fact. I personally knew one guy that was 86'd from the Army after 16 years' service because of an Article 15 he got as a private. Thing is, the board chair was with the guy during the incident and they both got -15s for it.

This is a terrible example of board procedure. kinda embarrassing that someone would even post this on behalf of the Army and all board members in this board. Those Leaders were not setting a good example by not being in ASUs, and also seems very unorganized.

Hmm... That chair trick caught my eye an enticed me to view the video. The same tactic was setup at my E-5 promotion board interview many moons ago back in the early 70's back during the Viet Nam era. Walking into the room, I thought "This is odd". Never the less, I made E-5 after only 26 months in service and only two months later than the minimum TIS requirement. My NCOIC at the time rated me as "Promote Immediately" on my last evaluation. Fortunately, my duties were solely dedicated to "National Security" and not prosecuting a war. But I did spend 16 months in the far western Aleutian Islands of Alaska ("Shemya Survivor"). I was later able to secure an early out after having served a total of 28 months, 12 days and 4 hours in service to Uncle Sam from a four year enlistment (USASA) thanks to a DoD RIF.
