Mom and Pop stores have a higher employee-to-merchandise ratio (more eyes per aisle) and a greater willingness to confront and prosecute thieves than big box corporate stores. Been to a Home Depot lately? No security, very few employees, and more cages than an animal shelter. It's easier to shop for tools online. The downside to a Mom and Pop, of course, is that it's more susceptible to armed robbery.

@@eyepatch3769 Do you have organized mass looters and people stealing as often as daily? I doubt it. These places shutting down are experiencing looting on a scale that is unprecedented.
Everywhere has some shoplifting, I get that. Some people are only capable of theft.

Aside from theft, hitting financial goals can be very difficult if employees are, for lack of a better word, lazy.
I'm currently a supervisor for Wal☆Mart, and I want to say a majority of the staff is just difficult to work with. Terrible productivity, not caring about doing their job right or in a timely fashion, calling in a lot or coming in late/going home early, it adds up.
I've seen countless new hires come through and just have a terrible attitude and work ethic and I really want to say (at least at my location) 75% of them don't make it past 3 months.
I'm not worried about my store closing bc we have a fairly decent team, but we have our issues too. Likewise with the other stores in our district.
Wal☆Mart can be a tough place to work at, but if everyone would come in and be a professional and actually earn their pay (and the company is paying more than it ever has now), the internal issues wouldn't be huge hassles at they are currently at other locations.
Plus the thieves. So much stolen product. Local laws need to get tougher on these scumbags whose actions affect the honest folk.
