    Roadstar forums were my go to for fixes and changes. You're basically the video version of them which is way easier for me since i can watch what your talking about. My hero.

      @@ClargoGarage i saw the fuel pump bypass for the side of the road fix. That helped me a bunch because my pump decided to start sprinkling fuel like holy water. I was planning on getting rid of it anyway but i figured i would run it dead before i worried about it. Mission accomplished. The other thing i have issue with is the ignition system, after some probing i think I've narrowed it down to the relay unit under the right side cover. I've ordered a new one but have thought about wiring in a secondary ignition to hide somewhere for emergencies (auto store two position switch and a momentary button switch like i had on my shadow) any advice you have for that would be welcomed. Might be a good idea for another side of the road repair video too.

      Great description lol , haven't seen one of these pumps fail like that yet, normally just stop working with no warning. I haven't really had any issues with the ignition system other than having a wire brake right at the connector at the CDI box, lost spark on one cylinder and limped home about 7km. Is the bike not wanting to roll over sometimes/not at all or seams like it's pulling tuns of current sometimes and is laboring to roll over ? I had that issue and thought my starter was failing or relay and ended up finding the decompression solenoid was on its way out (episode 48) I try/start the bike in that video so you can see it act up and here it then I force the decompressioner open and can here the difference, easy to get to 2 bolts of I remember correctly, even if it's not your problem it's a good one to keep in the memory bank for a rainy day. And the biggest advice for adding a backup system would be to keep it as simple as possible, don't get into the factory wiring more than you need to and heat shrink and solder when you do versus buttsplices ( they always give trouble eventually), and if you can mount it somewhere solid but obvious if a future owner has an issue they can hopefully figer it out , probably room behind left side cover I would think eh . And make sure it's fused whether it's by factory fusing or an inline fuse from the battery. And your absolutely right , that would be a good video, just what to do to get it going to get home would definitely help someone out , will probably see that before spring 👍

      @@ClargoGarage everything functions normally with key on, but no crank. No starter relay click either. Tested all wires and connections in the ignitions system and found functions to be normal. Jumped starter relay terminals and it cranks over like normal. Replaced starter relay already because i had a spare and I'm just waiting on the relay unit in the mail to swap out. I didn't notice any difference when cranking, doesn't seem to struggle at all or sound sluggish. It was a salvage bike that's been rebuilt before, got it super cheap barely running. Cleaned some stuff swapped some parts and rode like a brand new bike. Only problems I've had are the ignition issue and the pump so far. A lot of the parts mine needs aren't Available OEM parts anymore so I've been using the manual and random parts to try and come up with alternative solutions or repairing the old parts to make them work. Its a fun bike to work on except for the electrical system part since it runs back and forth a few places. And one bad relay can knock out the whole bike even though everything else will still work.

      Sounds like you should be pretty good once that part comes in. That's decent eh , what kind of miles does it have ? It really is an easy bike to work on for the most part , not over engineered, and everything isn't too bad to access , electrical on it, isn't overly complicated if you have the schematic, electrical in general on any system seems to be 5 hours to trouble shoot and 5 min to fix, where mechanical seems to be 5 min to trouble shoot and 5 hours to fix lol , I'm electrical by trade , majority of my job is troubleshooting electrical and some mechanical, one of the guys I work with always says the 5 min 5 hour thing but it seems to hold true most of the time . What parts are you trying to find OEM that aren't available anymore? For the most part I've had good luck getting what I need , but good to know what's getting hard to come by so I can keep my eyes open for that stuff lol

    Very wonderful vid. Everything I wanted to know you explained very well. I have a 2005 Roadstar Silverado, and the bike had been sitting for 15 years. Someone has stolen/swapped the fuel pump, for the bike only has 39000 km. Upon taking the plastic back cover off, i discovered that the point were just shot: there was almost nothing left, with the result that the bike would not start. I bought an aftermarket fuel pump for $89.00 from Amazon, and found out that although it was supposed to fit my model, the electrical connector would not fit. I had to change that by cutting the old pump's connector off and soldering it to the new pump. Also this new pump has a vacuum outlet on the plastic housing - I am not sure for what - all there is are the points. I plugged that off. It works alright, but I am not trusting it, so I bought one from Hotshot Motorsports, here in BC. Pricy at $345.00 roughly. But now After watching your vid, I might go pumpless. I have the stock carburetor, untouched. The choke though: I pull it out, but it seems to pull itself back-in about halfway. I have to wedge a piece of wood in to keep the bike running when cold. Any idea why that is? The bike was parked indoors for the storage duration, so rain and such could not have gotten into the cable. I noticed the idle knob seems to have the same problem: the housing twists along with the inside cable, making it hard to adjust the idle. Should I lubricate these 2 items to make them work? I have installed the K&N air filter as well, but I never got any length of hose with the filter. The K&N filter had a red plug where you installed the grommet. That is how it is now. Should I copy you and install a hose? I need to change both front and rear wheel bearings: do you have any vid on that? Thank you, and keep up the good work. By the way, I looked for 2 months on RUclips for a vid to run no fuel pump, but I never found yours until today 2024Jan30

      Thank-you ! And thanks for watching. Sorry for the delayed response, was on a cruise with the wife just got back home to Northern Ontario Sunday then back to work Monday, Finly have a chance to catch up. I might be in BC for a day or two this summer on the bike, haven't been out there yet. If I miss any of your questions just re-ask them or if you have any others , ill try not to miss any. 390000km is low for these bikes I'm up around 185000km so that bike has lots of life in it , but the fuel pump might of failed and that could be why it was missing , my original pump quit around 45000km and same with the following 2 OEM ones I put on the bike, seems to be a definite flaw in the design. I definitely would not trust the aftermarket fuel pump, I helped another person on here a few months ago that had issues, used my videos to help trouble shoot and put the aftermarket pump on for similar price and was having intermittent issues ( bike would randomly want to die or not run at all) , we went back and forth on here checking some other stuff out and ended back at the pump, they bought a OEM one, put it on and bike was 100% again. Going pump less, your carbonator should be fine , if you have any issues float level or needle could be the cause but after I put the larger needle and seat in mine I didn't notice any difference , biggest thing is keeping the fuel line up , after this summer I'll have a good comparison for fuel consumption with and without the pump , dident get enough riding in after removing it to have enough data to have a comparison. I've been meaning to make a video on the choke , I should get on that , so I had the same issues for a few years, never looked into it just assumed it was getting wore out ( I used a cloth pin to hold mine open haha) a buddy of mine ended up showing me you can tighten it , I'll try to make a video this month but I'll try to describe it, so where you pull the choke out , the part that stays on the bike there's that plastic ring that looks like it would just be a grommet or for looks turn that clockwise with your fingers and that will fix your choke issues. Your idle adjustment knob I would lubricant that cable with a penetrating oil like WD40 or something similar, keep spraying it for few days or week or two then try to start working it back and forth see if it will free up for you and keep spraying it ( that cable is all external to the carb). If you do need to take the carb off for any reason I do have a video on that and it's not to bad of a job , episode 73 I believe . For the K&N filter hose , thinking off the top of my head , I'm pretty sure that hose comes from the top of the cylinder heads (valve cover ) and is a vent line, going into the filter I believe dose a few things #1 it keeps dirt from working it's way in the vent line and eventually into the top end of the engine #2 when the bike is warming up would help to bring warmer air into the engine (like the heat riser off the manifold on alot of the cars from the 80s) #3 might be an emission thing , not sure on that forsure tho , I had thought about not venting that into the filter on mine but was worryed about dirt eventually getting into the top end through that vent line . I do not have a video on wheel bearings yet, I'm planning on ordering some new ones this winter and maybe doing them in the spring or next winter when I do them there will definitely be a video to follow, all of my wheel bearings are original and whenever I'm on a long trip it's in the back of my head kinda planing on doing them at 200000km but Ill be over that by the end of this coming season . Again thanks for watching and sorry about the delayed response.

    What are the benefits of the fuel pump delete?

    • @ClargoGarage
      @ClargoGarage  5 месяцев назад

      Basically just reliability, the fuel pump is one of the few weak links on the bike, I went through 3 pumps (at $250can a pump) I seemed to get around 45000km on a pump, actual running of the bike I don't really notice a difference, definitely not in normal riding (I think I get slightly better fuel economy at lower speeds without , and same at higher speeds it seems) , and in the way top end seems pretty much the same , Maybe slightly better with the pump (but that's arguable and up in the 170kmh 106mh and up range so the average rider probably ever effected by that ) . All the forms say you need to change your needle and seat to a larger one, I did , but I didn't notice any difference, even when I was hot rodding didn't notice a difference between the different needle and seat (factory 2mm, I put the 3mm in (still have the 3mm in, just finished a 11000+ km trip in 9 days with no issues )). I have another video just of bypassing it on the road , I would suggest if your unsure to at the very least know how to bypass it just to get home if it fails when your out , and can also try that to see how you find your bike performs (if your pump is working fine I would run it till it fails then make the decision to go pumpless permanently or not , also I believe it's 2003 and down they say the float level needs to be adjusted , 2004 and up it should be good . Hope this helps , thanks for watching 👍

      @kennygobert9393 no problem, glad they help, these bikes reserve seems to be the opposite direction to alot of other bikes , not a bad idea to run it in reserve once in a blue moon to know if you need it there is no issues , put some seafoam in the gas is good for cleaning the carb and valve train , (I put a can through every season ) .

    followed your instructions and so far so good...thank you so much. Question...I drilled out the vent spout at top of tank but when I try and blow or suck air through it, it feels plugged. I am not able to run a welding wire through and it stops where the spout is welded to the tank? Any advice?..My gas cap has vent plugs removed.

    • @ClargoGarage
      @ClargoGarage  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for watching, I believe the hole in the tank is on the smaller side to but no easy good way to make it bigger , with gas cap off should be able to suck and blow air but it's still pretty restricted but should be abit better with the one hole drilled bigger , part of my issue I believe was my vent line (episode 92 posted it a few weeks ago) the vent line was intermittently giving me issues but did not realize that there was an issue with it ( was worse riding in the rain then off and on for a few days later, found the issue when I was doing some periodic checks on the wiring (there's a check valve in the vent line , mine would sometimes work sometimes not work but thought it was the undersized hole for the vent [the forms on line seem like half the people halfto drill the tanks so didn't raise any concerns, and after I did it I didn't ride in any rain for awhile so thought that did the trick]) with that 90 degree bend in the vent makes it hard to figer out how big the hole really is on the tank side, I even tried getting a small mirror in the tank to look from the other side but couldn't get the mirror where I needed it to see. If you can blow air in it's probably enough, just has to keep up with the rate that the bike is burning the fuel and triple check your vent like, check out episode 92 (EP 92) if it seems questionable (probably Easyer to understand than me typing it lol if you have any issues let me know but hopefully your good , thanks for watching

      @@ClargoGarage thanks man! I ended up cutting the 90* off which left me with a short vertical spout. I drilled that out as it appeared to be reduced/blocked like the oem opening. Now it has lots of air flow/venting. Simply re-attached the hose with a spring clip to the vertical spout and it fits under the bezel perfectly. Also eliminated the roll over check valve.

    Thank you for the video. Can I make a suggestion that add Road Star to the title since Silverado is a trim level while Road Star is the actual model you are working on. Yamaha offered a few of their bikes with the Silverado trim level. It looks like none of your videos say Road Star. Adding that to your titles will make it easier for Road Star owners to find your great videos. I only stumbled upon your video because another Road Star owner posted a link. Thank you again.

    Great video, new subscriber here and have a question about my 05 road star 1700, seams to be flooding when opening the throttle and cuts out immediately when putting it in gear, I’m guessing fuel pump as it’s probably not getting enough gas when going from neutral to first. Any suggestions? Thanks Jim

    • @ClargoGarage
      @ClargoGarage  Год назад

      Thanks and thanks for watching! And two separate issues ? If it is flooding keep an eye on your engine oil , if gas is running into your motor we'll it is parked it can damage your engine. But I would try turning your idle up a bit , if the ideal is to low at idle when you twist the throttle sometimes it will "cough" , turn the idle up just a bit and normally fixes that if that is the issue. If that doesn't work (check the oil fist to make sure no gas in it) next step I would do is pull your air box off and check your air filter make sure that it's not overly dirty , if dirty replace it ( when really dirty it throws off the air fuel mixture) . With air box off fire up the bike and once up to temp ( choke off) work the throttle and can see if the accelerator pump is working and out of the jets should see a descent flow of fuel and the slide should start to open up. Left side of the carb is a plastic cover ( enriching cover) its in play at idle and coasting, if it is cracked it can give issues. If still not good check the float level and might be worth taking the carb off and take the bowl off and make sure the needle and seat don't have any dirt holding it open or anything in the jets .
      As far as going from neutral to 1st and stalling, my bike has done that once in a blue moon when it has sat for a longer period of time. In my case it seems like the clutch plates dry a bit and stick , I find before putting it into gear work the clutch a few times and that seems to work , could also be clutch cable needing some adjustment or starting to brake. As far as the fuel pump failing they normally completely stop working , will topically run the bike fine till they fail ( I've normally noticed after they fail and putting a new one in I use more gas and maybe slightly better acceleration, but the failing pump before it fully fails no issues expeshaly at idle ) in my case fuel pumps seam to last around 30000mile ish. Hope this helps abit , sorry for the novel , thanks for watching and subscribing . If you have more questions ask away and let me know what you find I'm always curious to know what the issue ends up being.
      Ep 57 for the clutch cable
      Ep 75 if you halfto get into the bowl
      Ep74 will have checking the float level, I think I run the bike with the air box off to in that video , I think you can see stuff working as far as fuel, slide , and accelerator pump.
      Ep 4 for removing the air filter
      Ep47 accelerator pump
      Ep 73 for removing the carb
      I have a whole playlist on this bike I think 30 some videos now might be something there that might help that I didn't think to list

I googled where you are and that works out really well with a ride I want to do, when I went to Newfoundland last summer I dident have a chance to get up to st Anthony, I still need to ride the north side but I have a ride planned in my head that I'm hoping to do in 2-3 summers from now , would be leaving from Ontario to channel port aux Basques, then from there to Saint barbe NL , jump on the fairy to Blanc sablon Quebec, from there into Labrador Maybe Marys harbor or something, depending on fairy schedule possibly spend the night otherwise back to Newfoundland to St Anthony area , if I have time ride around wherever looks interesting/fun then back to the fairy and home to Ontario. Not sure if I explained it ok but I think it would be a good ride and I can get that section of Canada checked off the list lol . I have instagram that works good for chatting and planning a ride , and I'm planning on making a Facebook account in the next week or so when I have a chance . If you have any rides you want to do I'm pretty open to anywhere Canada and USA , I try to do one good long haul ride a season when I can. Sorry for the long message, hope all has been well on your end 👍
