Thanks for having us Rick! Had a great time and can't wait to come and hang again!
Anytime Jake! You guys sounded killer last night!
Awesome video! What is the foot pedal/switch that you mentioned?
Aaron Short Music fc6 or fc12 by Fractal
saw you guys on the 8th in Dallas, Tx at House of Blues. great show.
This was a great time to watch as well!
Thanks for having us around Rick! Had a blast checking BeatoHQ! And thanks for coming out to the show too!
Thanks Chris!!
Since you're here, I'll ask: Was it the puppy on the shirt or the chicken fingers that prompted you to buy the t-shirt?
Killer drums Chris!

Rick beato is the only RUclipsr with his finger truly on where musicians musical interest is. I love this channel. Plini is phenomenal. Great to see great musicians getting some exposure from someone whose now gaining some clout on RUclips.
Have to agree 100% It's nice to have someone like Rick to answer questions BEFORE we can even ask them of him. And Plini absolutely rocks! Seem like nice guys too.
Plini always looks like he just woke up.
It's a lot of work to look like that all the time.
I know the feeling. 🙃
@@CarcPazu Nice Guitar Hero reference. xD

The RUclips automatic subtitles say your name is Rigby Otto.
That’s a great name.

Hahaha. I will now forever think of him a s Rigby Otto.

I think I can answer that question as to why Plini is catching on - they are a nice balance of the guitar shred style, traditional progressive melody and technicality (Genesis, Rush, Kansas) but done with a modern sensibility and the right amount of metal crunch. Hell of a sweet spot, love to listen to it while I work.
Agreed. His music also haas this dreamy quality to it which makes it accessible for even more people I feel. Not so dark och aggressive all the time.
Spot on.
Mike N to put genesis and Kansas in the same technical conversation as rush or even an inspiration for plini is pretty laughable, but I agree that he balances shred and melody well. I couldn’t love his note selections anymore
Your description alone is enough for me to want to check them out!
Joshua Blou t Sorry but Kansas and Genesis had periods Rush would had wished to be part of, also a huge fan of Rush.
My favorite thing about Plini is that he seems like a song-writer/composer, first, and shredder, second. What I mean is that his music always makes me feel something before it makes me think. That's a remarkable gift, and I'm glad that Rick's initial video about Electric Sunrise brought Plini to my attention. I also appreciate how self-deprecating and unassuming the whole Plini gang is. They seem like good guys!
It’s how I learned of Plini, probably (aside from What Makes this.. series and the music theory) the biggest contribution from Rick to me personally. It’s how much I dig Plini’s music.
Rick is like a kid in a candy store. He hasn't lost his excitement for the art - thanks Rick for reminding us to enjoy it.
A-frickin-greed!
13:12 this man of leisure got his degree in architecture while recording his first few releases and building the Plini name/brand at the same time. God damn Aussie's...
That dude is like two years older than me and makes me feel so bad about myself for having stopped practicing guitar during my first 2 or 3 years of college
It's amazing when you see Rick speak and interview these musicians because it's always in depth and you get so much out of it every single time, learning something new
I've watched Rick for a while now, during live streams and the talks with Rhett and Dave you can tell he is happy with what he's doing, but in this video you can really see the joy and passion he has for the whole craft. In most of the videos he seems like an educator, but here he looks like a kid at Christmas, and you can see what has driven him to do all this. So nice to see.
He also seemed so interested about using Plini's tone asking questions about the usability of it, like wondering if using the stomp would turn off the chorus and stuff. I totally picture him spending hours playing with it after they leave. Wonderful.
When Rick started playing, I immediately thought "is he good enough to be in PLini's band"? Hell yeah he is, he could give them lessons!
This is the future of rock... the opposite of sex, drugs and rock n' roll. clean, socially compatible, nerd friendly and recorded in a living room...
and its incredible
man if you think this is the only future you're barely listening to anything new

Sad that Troy wasn’t there, he is really kind and an awesome drummer.
He hasn't been with the band for a few years

Being a musician today is not only learning to play but one almost has to be computer software savvy too.
Kinda being anything today you need some level of software savvy.
My buddy tried to show me Plini back in middle school like 8 years ago. I hated it at the time and couldn't even follow it. It took a couple of months but I had fallen in love with Selenium Forest and would listen to it to fall asleep. Then Plini released the End of Everything EP and everything absolutely changed. I completely got sucked into his music and this genre. So thank you Plini and everyone in this community for introducing me to the art form.
Don't forget your buddy too
Sounds like a great friend
Next to Jeff Beck, my favorite guitarist and concert. Saw both last year up close and personal in SLC, UTAH. Both were changing experiences.
Grateful for you showcasing these guys, Rick!
I really wish there was a screen recording so we could see how Plini was setting up these presets. Great interview, though!
I thought that too. There should have been a picture in the corner of the screen.
you guys should have been at Vai Academy 5.0, where everything was revealed ;)
At least say the model of the amp lol is super hard to try to figure it out frame by frame
Cant give all the secrets away~!
Timothy A. Klejnot not in a "Tone Secrets" video 😂!
Literally just got home from watching Periphery, Plini and Arch Echo live, SUCH A FANTASTIC SHOW!
Accidentally had captions on. "Hey everyone I'm Rigby Otto" 🤣
What a nice interview, real people with real conversations. The world has become so fashioned and plastic, this is the opposite. Me like! And the long stereo reverb setting in the end was really stunning. Greetings from Norway
Rick: They’re playing with Periphery.......
Arch Echo: ight. Imma head out.
Yea arch echo is way better I saw them last June it was fucking sick
Chris Allison is a non-conformist. Everyone else is wearing long-sleeve tops/hoodies and Chris dons a t-shirt.
He’s also a master musician

Also, "One Love" Cane's puppy... was gonna tell Rick he should have asked them if he liked the chicken fingers.
Not just ANY t-shirt, a RAISING CANES T-shirt. Hell yes.
He seemed really likable right away, without ever hearing him before.
Been listening to Plini since the old days in Mike Portnoy's forum! I remember this 17 year old kid from Australia sharing his first EP there. It sounded fugging amazing and he was asking what we thought of the mix and all that haha. Awesome to see how much you've grown these years bruh!
Halcyon - the gift
Love seeing this and knowing this 'lore'

THANK YOU for this conversation. Saw Plini open up for Periphery in Denver before COVID, and I was thoroughly blown away.
Rick getting plinis preset reaction is like he is getting a gift he really wanted for xmas
Truly lovely conversation. This captures why I like Australians, Rick's channel and and Plini, in no particular order.
Love how they gave the guitar to Jake and let him mess around so Plini could change the tone in real-time. Jake also just insanely good. Makes me wish we had more Helix Nebula material
I'm seeing them tomorrow night with my daughter - we're stoked! I discovered these guys from your channel, Rick!
Camera angle on the AXE FX III when Plini was on it? + Where's the download link for the patch ???
Frickin Love Plini's music! and the whole gang. Flew all the way to Taiwan from Seoul to see them live in 2019. Blown away!
Awesome!
Man, Rick! Right now, you are doing the best content in RUclips! I didn't expected Plini at all! Awesome band, love their sound!
So good! I just discovered City & Colour...I know their music is on a different spectrum than Plini but they, along with Plini hits on a different level for me! So sad to see the crap music of today that makes the charts and Plini, City and Colour, etc.... that gets ignored!
I was introduced to plini's music on the "how to count odd meters" video that you made like 2 years ago. since that day, I've been listening to plini a lot
it's the perfect soundtrack for a walk on the beach at the summer, just puts every thought in the right place, it just makes everything great
thank you Rick, for introducing me to this amazing band, and thank you plini, for making good music
The same for me. A wonferfull discovery !
Rick Beato has one of the best jobs ever!
@Rick Beato I think one of the reasons that instrumental guitar music is doing so well these days is because, for want of a better way of putting it, it's a push back against the mainstream music of today. Sonically, in terms of sound design and production, modern pop records sound amazing a lot of the time. But in terms of melody, harmony and rhythmic structures, it is oversimplified and generic. 3 note melodies, sometimes less, basic generic chord progressions, drum patterns that are almost like tropes at this stage (besides 4/4 kicks, I'm thinking dembow rhythms and half time trap beats specifically)
There is genuine complexity in instrumental music, as well as solos and technique it requires the song to be carried by a strong melody as there are no obvious words coming out of a pretty face, its harmonically interesting, even the drumming on these albums is top notch.
Basically, I think a lot of people are tired of hearing the same songs reiterated in the same way 50 times in one year, and being treated like mindless consumers and are looking for, and finding, something that speaks to them.
Also the opportunity to record an entire album that sounds professional using only a computer and an audio interface is an amazing thing for a bedroom guitarist.
Such an awesome get! Discovering Plini and Guthrie Govan over the past couple of years has totally changed the way I write music and play guitar. Great interview Rick!
I found plini through spotify. I fell in love with the djent channel and found david maxim micic first. Weirdly, he is still the most obscure. I found so many artists after that, plini, animals as leaders, periphery, textures, tesseract, vildjharta, andromeda, scale the summit, uneven structure, volumes, MONUMENTS... so many others. The list goes on. Thanks for joining the crowd bois
I'd like to add Hedras Ramos' last album "The Impressionist" to this list!
I mean DMM's band is called destiny potato, it's not an easy thing to remember!
@@Jopeymessmusic I was referring to his bilo albums, specifically bilo 3. I found those first before destiny potato. And I'm extremely excited to hear the new album under the name sordid pink.
Blair Churchill me too. Spotify also told me he was playing in my town two weeks later so I went to the gig. Just awesome!
Love the same bands. Also check out The Helix Nebula (Simon and Jake's band), Stephen Taranto (also in The Helix Nebula), Corelia, Haunted Shores (periphery side project), Arch Echo (on tour with these guys)
Rick Beato: The prove that there's always something to learn everywhere and from everyone and that sharing knowledge is the best for everyone
This format needs to happen more. Awesome, Rick.
Watching Rick's reaction over the words "I just close it without saving" made my morning. Kind of wanted a split screen view of those patch settings though! lol
Rick, just an observation...
During interviews, I think that one of your best skills is the restraint you show to not step on the speaker after you’ve asked a question. You really do a good job of letting them fully answer without interruption...
you are like a drummer that doesn’t rush the fill to get to the 1!
I don’t know where you got that from, but it’s awesome.
So true! Good interview skills are pretty rare on RUclips.
Revisiting this, and really wishing Rick had shared screen shots of the settings in the patch/scenes. Some really nice tones here! -Tom
Sounds like “Band Meeting” on Flight of the Conchords. No, their accents are totally different! They’re like “where’s the car?” And we’re like “where’s the car? Love it!
Britt? Prizint. J'Maine? Prizint. Murray, that's me.. prizint
I happened to catch Plini about 4 years ago as a warmup band for Animals as Leaders in Silver Spring, MD. Now I'm a HUGE Plini fan. Their bassist, Simon, is also amazing
I don't understand why Plini's music sounds so hopeful to me. I'm so happy to see them today in Charlotte. And as usual, thank you Rick.
a lot of it is lydian, chords that feel like they're always leading upward and not resolving!
@@ScottBrunelleMusic I think it's more than that, maybe the timbre chosen too? a lot of reverb (good reverb) and even the occasional change on the snare. To me, listening to Plini is really emotional. But, yeah! Lydian too.
@@8varium5 I don't disagree! :)
Aside from the lydian effect it is also as what simon said in the interview.. Plini's guitar playing has this sense sounding vocally..
The show last night was awesome. I went there just for Plini, and even had the opportunity to take a picture with the guy. All of them are fantastic musicians.
THAT WAS FABULOUS! Co creating the AXE patch together was really collaborative! I'd bought all their recordings last year and just missed them in the swing through the states. Hopefully another time. Thank you RICK!.
Plini is the prog scene's John Mayer but less into his own hype lol
Dude, that's so on point to put into words. 🤣
Isn't Mayer a reformed dickhead? I remember seeing an interview where he basically pointed out the ways in which he used to suck as a person. Props to anyone with introspection, i could only imagine how difficult it would be to be John Mayer, and care enough to not be lame anymore.
@@pmshrevecomm Good point. Some who get that level of attention become too arrogant to realise how much of a dick they are.
Good point, actually! Interesting and tricky enough, but not too much, and melodic as well.
You're a great inspiration and teacher Rick. Not matter what video I watch of you explaining something, it just inspires me more to learn from that video. I'm a guitar player but your videos have made me want to learn more about the other aspects. Especially theory and the actual recording/production aspects of music. Love how you break things down and your explanations are very articulate. Thank you so much.
My 2¢: The reason why instrumental guitar-driven music is popular now might have to do with technology and the ability to learn SO many things quickly (RUclips channels like this one), and also gaming. Most kids and young adults nowadays grew up with Guitar Hero and games like that, which have helped kids/adults develop their hand/eye/ear coordination much faster. At least that might be part of it IMO
Exactly, plus with the internet providing information to learn things quickly, comes easier recording. Thanks to the internet, many musicians (especially guitarists) are now able to create music from home with ease and plugins like Plini’s Archetype are big steps towards impeccably realistic guitar tones.
@@kevinblaz6608 Absolutely.
When I first heard Pilini’s Selenium Forest and not knowing anything about him, I thought for sure, he’s playing out of some super high end boutique amp positioned in the middle of a certain type of room and mic’d a certain way to get that tone. Then someone said he plays through a Axe FX unit 🤯
This was enlightning. You asked all the questions I wanted to hear. Thanx Rick. Awesome as allways 🔥
Rick, as soon as I saw this video I jumped into listening to this band, it is A breath of fresh air to the ears and the soul.
The popularity of modern progressive rock right now is, to me, an evolution of the popularity of EDM and electro. Where EDM has got kinda stale it’s been refreshed by guitars with more authentic sounds and actual performances. I think you could argue EDM in general created more people interested in instrumental music as well.
I love the silence within the band after the first question. 🤷🏼♂️🥳 Great bunch of guys that found each other that sums up to excellence. Love it!
I like that you put your guests to work. LOL any chance you’d share those AFX3 settings? 😬
I can't thank you enough for getting the right people in the right time, thanks
Shredders today are way cooler than they were in the 80’s a lot of those guys had a superiority complex. Glad to see laid back shredders!!
I think a lot of it comes down to the status of rock. Back in the 80s rock music was topping the charts, pretty much every band was representing this larger than life, cocky, womanizing type of image. It made absolute sense for shredders to market themselves as the superlative of those guys. Rock is in a very different place right now. Pretty much all rock music is happening in a space that would have been considered "the underground" in the 80s and 90s. Artists are much closer to the fans, they got to become more human in that process.
Adanedhel - I was really talking about the shred scene as a whole. Most of what was on the radio wasn’t shred. The guitarists who were in bands that weren’t even signed or only famous in their towns tended to be jerks and often would make fun of guitarists who onstage because they didn’t play the prerequisite amount of arpeggios or even “shredding” properly. It was crazy to watch. Don’t get me wrong , there were some good guys who helped rookie guitarists but they were few and far in between.
I don't know. I met many of the shredders from back in the day. Paul Gilbert, Tony MacAlpine, Steve Morse, etc. All of them were super cool. Yngwie...ok...I'll give you that one.
SkullBits - I was talking more about the local shredders. I’ve met all those guys too and they were all cool. I even got to meet Jason Becker who was super cool. In the Bay Area every shredder was “almost” signed by Shrapnel Records. Lol
Spongebob Squareballs - Shredders back in the day weren’t as popular as Radio Rock bands of whom you were describing. They were on smaller record labels and drew decent club sized crowds but not arenas like the bands on the big labels. Shredders were true guitar nerds. Glam bands and the metal bands on the radio weren’t as technically proficient as shredders. It wasn’t until Yngwie, Vai and Paul Gilbert got into Big record deals is when what was considered shred showed up on the air waves.
The quality of your content is simply beyond belief, Rick.. thank you so much!
That SG sounds insane! Great video!

Saw Plini on the 8th at House of Blues in Dallas,TX with Periphery. Great show, Plini was very good.
I came across Plini's Sweet Nothings EP scouring RUclips several years ago. Instantly hooked!
It's all about the song composition. Plini excels at that and gets the respect of the hard core technical crowd too.
Nice!
Rick, the other band they're touring with (Arch Echo) is another band you should look into. They're another stellar Prog Metal band that deserves more of the spotlight!

It's always so funny to see Rick's laser focus on the neck the moment someone plays guitar
I noticed that too!!! :)
Wow! You guys are amazing. I'm a bit embarrassed to say I hadn't heard your music. Thanks to Rick for introducing you. There's every chance you may not be playing on the Gold Coast but I'd love to see you guys live in the big smoke post-covid. cheers!
Fantastic interview, love this band! I believe they're moving forward with Satriani's "Strange Beautiful Music" and going next level (or several levels!). So melodic, yet powerful and interesting. Hope they make it out Seattle way soon! Cheers
As a child of the 80s and with a deep seated love for 80s metal, I resonate with the idea that prog is moving toward composition and riffs, not just blazing solos. Not only is this style more accessible to listeners and guitar players, but it allows for the possibility of introducing new genres of music into the prog mix. I really love the current instrumental prog movement and especially Plini’s unique fusion style.
God I love Plini and co. They were actually mixed better live than Periphery, I was kind of shocked
I love the last little part!! So cool to see them just hanging out and talking tones and gear...I’ve seen Plini live they are amazing!!

Thanks for letting us see this, even though it made you look so old, with nobody caring about all the hardware, just embracing the digital era. Thanks!
Progressive music came this far thanks to 80s progressive bands that are still pushing the envelope and building you're audience up. Because lots of fans lets say from Dream theater or symphony x or opeth which is a huge community already likes this kind of music. Also internet accelerated the adoption of this kind of music.
