      Had it in the DH casing as a front for maybe 3/4 months now. Not a better tyre for grip IMO. The DH casing allowing some ridiculously low PSI for extra grip on suitable terrain without squirm when pushing hard. Brilliant tyre best I’ve tried.

      I’ve been riding the Specialized Slaughter (same semi-slick design as the minion ss... moving over to the SS as I got one for Christmas with an Assegai pairing). For loose over hard pack and loose over rocks (tech-climbing), I haven’t found a better rear tire. I mainly wanted a fast-rolling rear tire that has grip for technical climbing but can also grip into fast downhill turns. These new semi-slicks are completely the answer. I found that the tightly spaced center knobs act almost like a cheese-grater when trying to get some grippy torque on loose over hard pack while climbing. Where I slipped out before on technical climbing features, I’m now getting surprisingly more grip than past conventional tires like the Agressor or Spesh Purgatory. I also like a tire I can lock up (predictably) to swing the rear around. Again, these types of tires were the answer. Also, because of the lower center knobs, the side-knobs hook up quicker into turns. I’m a huge fan. Can’t really recommend them for constant mud action but I’m in Colorado and that’s not at all what we ride here.

    I'm confused why the assegai is getting so much coverage. Suspension or frames can be tangibly better, but how could a new pattern be so much better than the proven ones? It's not really something you can measure.

    • @dilanweerasinghe6482
      @dilanweerasinghe6482 4 года назад +2

      Grayson Adams, the tires designs and compounds we’ve all known for so many years have drastically changed as technology has evolved. This is the same reason why carbon frames today are light years ahead of carbon frames from 10 years ago. The Maxxis Assegai and Specialized Eliminator are a couple examples of the tire industries latest and greatest designs and technology. In EVERY racing sport where wheels are involved, tires are the NUMBER 1 most crucial component that will determine a podium finish or not. Tire companies across the board from 4x4’s to cars to bikes spend millions trying to develop a tire that will provide racers with the extra edge (both in design and just as important, compounds). This is the answer to your question. I was riding the Specialized Butcher (same design as the DHF) exclusively for years. The tire before that was the Kenda Nevegal, which was the reigning champion for years. Have you heard much of Kenda recently? Nope! Why not? Because they had the mentality that their Nevegal was the best. It didn’t take long for forward thinking tire companies like Maxxis and Specialized to overtake Kenda in the tire market. The Assegai and Eliminator are simply examples of the tire industry moving forward. As I haven’t tried the Assegai (got one for Christmas), I can attest that the Eliminator by Specialized (again, very similar design to the Assegai) is light years ahead of the now “old” DHF/Butcher tread pattern. After riding the Eliminator, I realized what I was missing in the older designs. Where I thought the DHF/Butcher tread was all confident-inspiring, these new designs found on the Assegai and Eliminator take it to a whole new level. As mentioned in the video, I worry MUCH less about washing the front end out on flat and loose turns and wet roots. Game changers these tires are.
      Along those same lines, pay attention to these new “semi-slick” rear tires like the Minion SS AND Specialized Slaughter... the pairing of these tires with grip-King tires like the Assegai/Eliminator has made my riding quicker and more controlled. It’s like being on a new bike!

      @graysonadams2485 4 года назад +1

      @@dilanweerasinghe6482 Wow thanks for the response, I never really thought about how important tires were. It's funny that you should mention the eliminator, because my 2020 stumpy came with that tire up front, and although it could just be that I'm used to my xc hardtail, the grip and predictability was the first thing I noticed about the bike.

    • @dilanweerasinghe6482
      @dilanweerasinghe6482 4 года назад +1

      Grayson Adams, the Eliminator is an excellent tire. Not surprised at all if the new bike feels like it grips and predicts well! Tires are the only part of the bike that actually have contact with the ground and therefore are the most important part of the bike!

      Or... pair up a Minion SS in the rear to make up for the slower rolling Assegai as shown in the video. I also really love these types of combos. My similar setup (Spesh Eliminator/Slaughter) is actually faster all around compared to previous tire setups where I compromised rolling resistance/grip both front and back. But agreed, if you’re doing mostly flat riding... there will be faster options there but you sacrifice cornering/off camber grip.

      A mud spike like the Shorty is going to be way better in mud, and way worse in dry. Mud spikes are designed for mud only, and nothing else. Whereas the Assegai has been designed to be pretty freaking good in all weather conditions.

    • @TheLostCo
      @TheLostCo  5 лет назад +2

      I've seen it quite a bit and I think it would be awesome!
      I really like the Minion SS so I can really slide my rear tire exactly where I want it, but that tire isn't for everybody. I think with a DHF or DHR2 in the back would be a pretty standard, grippy setup, or the Aggressor in the rear in dry and dusty conditions.
      We've got all of the Maxxis tires on our website @ tinyurl.com/y34zs7p4 with free shipping on all orders in the USA.
