    I want hipster scarf-wearing George to show up in future episodes, and every time he does he's wearing one more scarf. Eventually his head will just be a big ball of scarves.

      @SleepingCocoon 6 лет назад +17

      he's being completely genuine, though.... the only "joke" is the persona he adopts for the buzzword speech. the rest of the video is him being completely enamored with VR. he *truly* does believe that it's not a gimmick.

    • @Trakesh

      That's really depressing.

    • @SleepingCocoon
      @SleepingCocoon 6 лет назад +21

      that's pretty cynical - the guy is clearly super excited for this technology now that it's actually getting somewhere and wants to see people do amazing things with it (which a number of developers already have). what's depressing about that? new creative means and exploration of the ways we do what we do are not at all depressing. if you feel that games "should" be played a certain way, you really need to consider that at one point video games themselves were the same kind of gimmick, as well as any number of the different control schemes being tried out for them.

    This is the only positive review and outlook on VR I've ever seen outside of sensationalist journalism websites aimed at 40 year olds. And that's interesting because it comes from a guy who turned out to be a mutant insusceptible to motion sickness (within reason). And as the voice I trust the most when it comes to commentary and editorials on gaming, you sir have got me maybe re-thinking my position on VR.

    • @JohnSmith-sk7cg
      @JohnSmith-sk7cg 6 лет назад +3

      As someone who started in the highly susceptible category of VR sickness and graduated to middle of the road on the spectrum (I usually have to use the mild 'comfort setting' in fast movement games), it's not as big of a deal as people tend to rail about. There's basically two things that make you sick, and that's yaw/roll and acceleration (note I didn't say movement, specifically acceleration) when independent from your body. Most games design around this.
      Yaw/roll is only really a concern in cockpit games. Developers design around this either by not having it or, more commonly, offering comfort settings that add slightly thicker frames on the struts between window panes or an extra crossbeam. It doesn't take much to resolve the issue. If I use no comfort settings, yaw usually has me wanting to puke within a minute or two. If I use the lowest comfort setting in flight games (as in least obtrusive), I can play for hours fine.
      The second is acceleration and most games simply mitigate that by instantly jumping you to the next tier of speed when using indirect control Unless I'm rapidly switching speeds over and over, I can play for great lengths of time fine here as well.
      For anything that isn't exclusively roomscale or uses teleporting in combination with roomscale, there's an adjustment period. It's not a great sales pitch and I get that can turn people away, but it's not a big hurdle either and VR is truly amazing. Starting out a few roomscale games gets your brain comfortable in VR and will cause no nausea, period. After that, move onto other games and play them as you would. Begin playing non-1:1 movement games with high comfort settings and lower them over time. Generally speaking, this isn't a per-game thing unless that game is poorly coded. If you find yourself adapting to one, you're adapting to all of them.
      If you start to feel unusually warm for your level of activity, take a break as that's the sign that nausea will follow. After a week or two, you'll notice that it'll take significantly longer for that unusually warm feeling to come on. I've yet to meet someone who within a few weeks, couldn't play a non-1:1 movement game on mild comfort settings for extended periods of time.
      And while VR sickness is the inverse of traditional motion sickness, playing VR has significantly helped me with motion sickness when reading in cars and trains.

    I recently got PSVR and it has been eyeopening. I have loved it so far and it was my first time experiencing VR. Hopefully the PS5 will be designed on improving the potential room-scale and lack of ports. (Though I recommend charging docks for controllers, its yet another expense but if it plugs directly into the wall, it solves the lack of port problem and keeps everything charged even while the console is off)

      I'm five months into PSVR and the honeymoon is still on. We need more AAA games though, especially RPGs, but that will come. I'm already addicted now, but next gen VR is going to be off the hook.

  • @shonen991
    @shonen991 6 лет назад +10

    There will always be a sub-sect of people who this technology can never work with. People with eye problems, neck/leg/back problems. Things that simply sitting on a couch with a controller, far from the screen can work for them, whereas moving the body around and having the screen so close to their eyes can't.
    Being a person who has mild eye strain, I can't really watch 3d movies because it begins to physically hurt me after a while.
    While there are things VR can do, there will always be a limiting factor in the playerbase for these and probably other reasons.

    • @georgeandrews1394
      @georgeandrews1394 6 лет назад +5

      Of course, but the deaf can't listen to radio shows or podcasts, and the blind couldn't enjoy pre-sound films (and even now, they still only have access to part of the experience). My brother gets a headache after watching 3D films, too, and I myself might not be able to use VR because of my own eye problems.
      It does suck, but with every new piece of technology, some group gets left out. However, at least in some cases, we can try to find workarounds.

    I'm so happy to see a major person in video games speak optimistically regarding VR. All I ever read about it is that it's a gimmick, it has novelty. But I've been doing VR stuff for close to 3 years now and love every minute of it. I seriously can't get enough. And I'm using cobbled together phone VR and software to play PC games (used to be Cardboard + Trinus, now I use GearVR + Riftcat). I can't wait to actually get a Vive.

      As an HTC vive owner, the idea of consoles and Oculus competing only leads to a better product.

    I don't think people realize how revolutioanry this is going to be. Just imagine how this will change everything, art galleries, theatre, concerts, cinema, watching movies with friends.

    • @MrJoeyWheeler
      @MrJoeyWheeler 6 лет назад

      Art galleries -> Except people go to art galleries to actually see the art. You can already see digital representations of most art galleries but people still prefer to see the real thing. So VR will help basically nobody.
      Theatre -> The streaming costs would be astronomical and if you're doing a home experience you might as well just pop in the DVD or use your smart TV to play it in your living room. Cinemas would be unwilling to use a large quantity of VR headsets because of the expense and the fact that they *will* be lost, damaged, or stolen regularly, and directors and filmmakers would generally be unwilling to use it because you cannot make a good cinematic experience without cinematography, which is something you lose if you try making VR films.
      And if you mean stage-play theatres, then we jump into another realm of problems where you'd actively damage the business of theatres. Same with concerts.
      I rather think you are *severely* overestimating the capabilities, much less usefulness or practicality, of VR, my friend.

    • @juanmanuelbarbier8639
      @juanmanuelbarbier8639 6 лет назад +1

      An art gallery isn't just a bunch of frames hanging on walls, space takes a huge part of what makes an art gallery interesting. Besides, people can't just go to all art galleries in the world because they don't have the money or the time to do it.
      I don't know if streaming a play would be very expensive. Just imagine the actors and actresses acting via VR in front of a group of spectators. There a few games that do this sort of thing, like VR chat or Comedy Night.
      Anyway, that's not actually my point. What I am trying to say is that this gives accessibility to experiences that we could not do otherwise

    SO great to hear someone FINALLY say something POSITIVE about VR! I've had my PSVR since Christmas 2016 and though it has been slow going at times, I do love it.
    Might I recommend two things: Firstly for exercise games, don't forget to try Sparc (which unfortunately is online only but REALLY good and has cross play with PC) and Knock Out League (literally Punch Out!! in VR).
    The other is...well...look up a game called Honor and Duty. It's a cheap $7 FPS which got VR patched in and for some reason it has better Aim support than most AAA games and it has 10-player online. Good luck getting a match but even just playing the cheap hoard-esque single player is a hoot for $7.

    Agreed on all points. I'm a Dell Visor user and I think the dollar to performance ratio is highest with that headset. I got mine used for 160. Only major drawback is a lack of support, though Steam VR is now supported.

    • @ZILOGz80VIDEOS
      @ZILOGz80VIDEOS 6 лет назад +1

      This though, I've got the Lenovo Explorer (kinda wish I had gotten the Visor though) and while SteamVR integration is there it's sometimes pretty rough in games that don't say they support WMR. When it works though it's just as good as the vive and that massive play area is great.

    • @12ealDealOfficial
      @12ealDealOfficial 6 лет назад

      The front mounted camera solution on WMR headsets is ingenious really. No setup time whatsoever. I'm bummed as well about games that don't specifically state WMR support. VorpX is the same way; some forum posts say it's compatible, some say it isn't.

    This is the PSVR video review I've been waiting for.
    I recently had the opportunity to play with a Vive at roomscale for 2h straight, and I was blown away by the experience. It was my first actual VR experience outside of my crappy Gear VR headset. I enjoyed it so much that I began researching the cost associated with a Vive, and contemplated buying a computer and the headset and the whole damn kit before realizing it would come up to like $2k CND.
    Next best option was the PSVR, but I had my doubts. I now know for a fact that I'm better off waiting for the next iteration of PS VR software. While the PSVR is very impressive, it's just not quite there yet in terms of the technology (and the price is still too high in Canada I think). Your video just helped quantify what I had already begun to suspect... that VR is awesome and it IS worth it, but there are limitations, and if you're ready to look past those limitations then go for it, and if not, maybe wait and see what the next iteration will bring.

  • @fireaza

      If you have a decent computer (IE haswell cpu, GTX 1050 TI and up) you might want to check out Windows Mixed Reality. You can get a Dell Visor with the controllers for ~$270 and especially in major titles like superhot vr and job simulator it'll track nearly as well as the vive and leagues better than PSVR.

    I dont think that VR will ever replace media. No matter what it has one huge issue that i dont believe it will ever be able to overcome, and that is the space that is required to use one. My guess is that, just like it currently is, it will be a separate form of media, while the traditional form we have now will still dominate. I wouldn't be surprised if VR arcades will become the big thing.

I think I get where you're coming from with the nostalgia angle. I haven't felt that jump in gaming like I did during other generations. Oddly I think Microsoft will be helping with that too, the Mixed Reality headsets ...are SURPRISINGLY good and simple.
      I think their tech might be the one to get cheap, simple to set up VR in the house. Got one for $250 and room scale for that price? What the heeeell?? The Dell one is good, Lenovo is too but apparently the Samsung one is supposed to be super good with (currently) the best screens of any headset.

      This so much. I've got the Lenovo Explorer (dell visor is better though) and it's great. Especially in games that explicitly support it like Superhot VR and Job Simulator it's just as smooth as vive but at psvr pricing and I can actually turn around. Plus if you've got a gaming laptop and are willing to strap it to your back the inside out tracking means it can use functionally near infinite play areas. Theres a video on youtube somewhere of a guy mapping it to a 30 foot by 30 foot room and it didn't even stutter letting him walk around it in game.

    • @Snotnarok
      @Snotnarok 6 лет назад +1

      I heard the Lenovo one was better from a review. I've been enjoying the dell but what have you heard between the two?
      I haven't tried Superhot or Job Simulator but I tried The Lab, Star Wars Droid Repair, Gorn, End Space and Space Pirate Trainer and it's worked really well. Like you said actually being able to turn around being a solid thing since the Vive only comes with the two sensors and that doesn't give you the same movement obviously.
      That's really insane, walking around that much. I'd guess he did the tracing or otherwise you'd totally risk bumping into a wall or whatever.

    I am opening a VR Arcade in TN, I wish you could just come check out our stations. If you're loving the PSVR that much, it would be great to see how much you like having a 20ft x 20ft space using an HTC Vive Pro that has the wireless kit. Room-scale VR is so much fun and it's a bummer that the PSVR has such a limited FoV.

    Ok. So it’s not just me that thinks PS VR is great. :) VR is in its infancy but it has great potential. I hope it keeps evolving and we eventually get our version of the PS4 in VR (hardware, software, fidelity, etc). I had the same reaction as George when I bought my PSVR. One year later and I still like it. I bought it because of Resident Evil 7. I thought it looked great in VR and I was not disappointed. Resident Evil 7 brings out some of the best that PSVR currently offers. I hope they keep improving because there is vast potential there. Not just for games but a whole new way of experiencing media in every day life. I watch movies with my PSVR. It’s like being in the heaters with a large screen display.

    Awesome review! I'm almost a year and still blown away every time I put the headset on. There's so many great games I've got at least 30 games I'd consider must have titles. I have trouble playing regular flat screen games anymore, nothing against them, I've been a flat screen gamer since the early 80's, I'm just thoroughly obsessive about all things VR. M only concern is Sony needs to introduce new controllers, the Move controllers work well, but have limits, I'd be happy with just a version of them with analog sticks. Thanks for the positivity!

    Im actually going to school to develop programs for VR, and just as you said, Google Maps VR is one of the best applications of VR. Not only is this something that I think is gonna change media, but It can offer so much to those who arnt able to experience things in the real world. And with now PC free VR becoming viable, we can bring those experiences to the bed-ridden and terminally ill. We can have kids who are stuck in a bed going through multiple cancer treatments travel to their wildest dreams. We can have retirement homes have VR experiences where they can visit their old home and go on vacations without leaving the safety of their living space. Introverts can watch brand new movies in the comfort of their own home without having to worry about finding a seat that isnt covered in Soda and mysterious liquid.

    I've been a VR skeptic since the very beginning, but I must say that your enthusiasm is quite infectious. I had my first experience with VR last June: I was working at a local convention and I had to take care of a booth where we made people try out the HTC Vive. During those three days I played a little bit of Arizona Sunshine and the Archery minigame from The Lab. I thought that they were cool, but I didn't find them that impressive, to be honest.
    It might have been because there were a lot of technical problems with the HTC Vive, or the fact that while playing I would always get entangled in the wires, or the fact that the visor wasn't confortable to wear at all, or even the fact that those two games weren't that good (I mean, the archery minigame was actually really well made, but it wasn't as immersive as Arizona Sunshine, so it wasn't as good of a showcase for the technology).
    Maybe (most likely, actually) the problem is that the technology is still really rough and expensive, while the software is still very rudimental. But I didn't think of this situation as you did, as a new beginning for the gaming landscape. Thinking of VR like this is actually really intriguing. It's like we are now in an Atari 2600-like era, thinking of how things will mature and get better is pretty exciting. Especially because, as you said in the video, being excited with new hardware and innovations with traditional videogames is becoming more and more difficult as time goes on. This is refreshing.

      Huw Guyver I know Gamestop is doing a special trade in deal. 170 for your old ps4, brings the pro to 260. Just traded in a week ago. In terms of graphics there is a very noticable difference. William Clare It could change cinema, as in physical cinema however. Once the resolution gets high enough, you could replicate an IMAX theater perfectly in VR and it would be no different from a real one. Infact, from a quality perspective, it would be better.

    • @residentgrigo4701

      Continuously shot films exist tough and films could have slight paused between scene transitions, as does theater. You could also go into a virtual cinema and watch the film live with a web crowd.
      Video games also equally rely on on editing (the boring stuff is skipped) as film/shows and even bare bones looking games as Superhot have a sense of cinematography in the way levels are presented. It´s not the early 90s anymore.

    I purchased a Dell Visor Windows MR headset recently for the same reason: the price dropped low enough for me to risk it. The only 'made for VR' game I have is Elite Dangerous, but man did it blow me away. I think this has the potential to turn walking simulators into something far more immersive, and I am extremely pumped to see how developers make use of it. I'm using VorpX to replay all my favorites and the results are mostly hit with some miss. Once I got Fallout: NV set up, it is one of the best RPG experiences I've had. Playing Insurgency is one of the most hectic experiences I've had and replaying Half Life in full VR breathes new life into that game for me.
    I'm excited, but at the same time, worried, because the low consumer uptake may dissuade developers. Anyway, splurged on Superhot VR now. You sold me.

    My main issue in regard to VR is that I struggle to see it as anything other than a glorified extension / evolution of the already existing first-person camera perspective.
    First-person games and movies (especially documentaries and guided tours) certainly have their place and can provide fantastic experiences, but they are A form of presentation, not necessarily THE one that every work should aspire to. There is a lot more to presentation than "immersion".
    If every game tries to be RE7, Skyrim, or Thief, then we'll lose out on REmake, Dark Souls, and MGS3. Could any of the latter games be made for VR without losing their respective voice and visual identity? Would there be a place for games like these in a VR-dominated market?
    I'm trying to be open-minded about VR but it seems to me that, even at its best, this technology will always just fill a certain niche. And I'm afraid that we might lose out on a lot of great things if this niche ever became the de facto norm.
    Then again, I'm not really interested in technology for technology's sake. System specs and various technical buzzwords mean very little to me. I want to see how technology can fuel genuine creativity without devaluing established tools. Are one technological step forward and two creative steps back really the future?
    Any thoughts?

      I thought the same thing too until I played Superhot VR back to back with Superhot. Superhot is kind of a stand out thing but how one to one the controls felt is one of those things you can't truly understand until you try it. The base game just feels lifeless now still fun but so much less... present? Think of it like the difference between wolfenstein 3d for DOS and half life.

      I heard a good analogy. Imagine being in a truly amazing place, you hear the waterfall, birds singing, sun is shining etc. and then you show a picture you took of said place to someone and try to convey this feeling. That is how for me it feels to try and explain VR , I can't.

    • @KSubzero1000
      @KSubzero1000 6 лет назад +3

      But that's okay. I completely understand how immersive and life-like it must be.
      My worry is that this specific type of immersion might be supplanting other, less emulative presentation types at some point.

    • @IskandarTheWack
      @IskandarTheWack 6 лет назад +1

      Your main issue is fixed by simply trying psvr, oculus, or vive.
      You don't feel like you're looking at a screen, you look over and see someone in the game be it npc or another player and it feels like they are to scale, like looking over at an npc and him just being as large as you. Looking up at mountains or something and just being amazed by it's scale like you're looking up at a skyscrapper.
      There are gameplay stuff too, like ducking under a sword swing or under bullet fire, doing the things he mentioned in the video, the move controllers and stuff allowing pretty much for your hands to have free movement, even among two guns, and it just feels right in vr while out of it they just feel like wii controllers you're swinging at the screen. Looking around and picking things up, etc.
      The immersion and gameplay possibilities are endless, it's literally a 2d to 3d level of upgrade, if not more.
      It makes just about any game better if it's properly made, yes some games suck but those games would suck even more out of vr, but good games are made great, great are made amazing, etc. Resident Evil 7 was a solid game, well it's one of the best games around in vr.
      Also the reason why tech is important is because you need to do it on two screens and you need all the other stuff going on, also it's pretty much required to have steady 60fps or 120fps to be comfortable in vr. Also regarding the 2 screens, it doesn't feel like two screens, it feels like you're in the game and you even have peripheral vision realistically done.
      You think it's not the best thing since sliced bread since you haven't tried it honestly.
      Heck it even improves games where you aren't the character, even 2d platformers are better in vr. You'll find yourself liking genres you previously didn't because of vr.
      You should get vr RIGHT NOW and subscribe to a channel like psvr without parole to avoid the sucky games like the justice league vr game that was essentially just a few mini games meant to be used as an ad for the movie.
      PSVR genuinely has better exclusives than xbox one does.

    George, if you're concerned about being too sedentary while gaming you might want to consider a treadmill or recumbent bike setup. I shifted to a standing desk and treadmill setup about a year and a half ago and it's worked brilliantly. Since then I've done hundreds of hours of fast paced walking while gaming and it's been really enjoyable. I also run, but not usually while playing, though it's definitely possible and I'd like to try to do it more. There's definitely an adjustment period with treadmill gaming and you'll want to start with slow speeds to be safe - you'll probably find yourself unconsciously turning your body with your in-game character's movements sometimes - but it doesn't take very long to get used to. Heck, these days fancy fully motorized sitting/standing desks can be bought for reasonable prices (I got mine for $300 from Autonomous, where similar models can go for upwards of $1000)! I know this kind of setup definitely won't work for everyone, but if you love games and/or do highly sedentary work it can be a real quality of life boon.
    Also it's great to see a video with genuine excitement! Big fan of yours. All the best.

    Still skeptical given that George's own VR video showed he is one of those unusually good with getting around nausea, and speaking as someone who's experienced VR sickness in a variety of games, there is no way I'm dropping over $300 on something that has even a 50% chance of making me madly sick in any given game *shrug

    Gave it the credit it deserves but pointed out the issues that need to be fixed. Glad you enjoy it, I love mine. The Wipeout Omega VR update is killer.

    13:25 - People are now, unironically, mimicking Star Wars kid. What a time to be alive.

    Personally, I don't like VR, but I do see a future for it since the porn companies are in.

    The biggest barrier for VR is essentially needed a room dedicated specifically for using VR with very little furnishing if any at all. This is a problem today because for most people's financial situation it would make a lot more sense to just rent out an extra room and collect a few hundred dollars per month than to only use that room for a niche gaming accessory.
