the Wii U is a wonderful example of the ways poor marketing can create insurmountable sales problems, even in spite of a good product. It's also shows us Nintendo's habitually bad timing.
I get the feeling the Wii U is our generation's Dreamcast - it was great, but in another timeline (one so close you can almost taste it) it could have been so much more.
One thing I never understood was the way they handled the eShop. I remember how much of a big deal everyone made it that you can get Mario 3, Ocarina of Time, Pokemon Snap, and a whole bunch of other games on the Wii U...when they were always available for the Wii U from the literal beginning. They were in the Wii Shop. They were *always* there, and they're still there now. These games should've been available on the Wii U eShop itself from the very beginning, since they were available on Wii U anyways. And it was baffling how if you already own one of these games on the Wii side, you can't get the Wii U version for free. It's at a discounted price, even though *it's the same game and the system knows you own that same game*.
@OrchidEleven Nope lol. It's more like if your Toyota used two tanks of oil and you can't just move oil from one tank to the other without paying, even though you still own the oil. Or something.
I had Bayonetta 2, wonderful 101, xenoblade chronicles x, mario maker and more. None of it ended up resonating with me. Sometimes people don't like the things you like.
SpitefulToast So... instead of buying shitty Wii U games and disliking it because of said games, you bought some of the best games ever released for the console and ended up disliking it anyway? Obviously something rang a bell with you and that console if you were playing these kinds of games on it in the first place. ROFL
I think the single line at around 11:21 in the video sums up how I felt about Nintendo's approach to the Wii U "they didn't want to go through the trouble of doing so" what a disappointment of a console. So much potential but Nintendo didn't want to go through the trouble of releasing better games for the system. To spend real money on trying to actually advertise the system like how they're doing with the switch (I mean they paid for a freaking super bowl commercial for the switch. Really shows you how much they cared about the wii u). To release more and better vc titles like GameCube support and other systems. Nintendo couldn't be bothered with the wii u which makes me wonder why they even made the thing in the first place
George always talks like he's saying a sarcastic phrase, like he's making quotation marks with his fingers. So, when he actually is being sarcastic, it's hard to tell haha!
You basically said everything I ever felt about the Wii U. It was a head of it's time, but had none of the support it needed to really shine as a console.
It's sad to me that the Wii U died such a painful death. I share your love and intrigue of hardware gimmicks, and I wish that the Wii U could have hadmore games that would use its touchscreen. I always thought that off-TV play was a 'lazy' use of the GamePad, at least compared to all the other stuff that is possibke eith it...but sadly that's the only part about it that is still coming to the Switch. I'm disappointed that there is NO possibility at all to have the same functionality as the GamePad in the Switch. From its inception I always thought of possible ways to use the touchscreen...I'm just sad how few of them got a chance to shine.
"I always thought that off-TV play was a 'lazy' use of the GamePad, at least compared to all the other stuff that is possibke eith it...but sadly that's the only part about it that is still coming to the Switch. I'm disappointed that there is NO possibility at all to have the same functionality as the GamePad in the Switch. "My thoughts exactly. When it comes to Wii-U titles, Off-TV is expected, not hype-worthy. Some games that really showed the GamePad's prowess had no Off-TV Play period, which I always found kind of telling, for lack of a better word.
You consistently upload the most thought-provoking videos on the subject of video games that I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. You not only stand a head above (several heads above) other RUclipsrs, but above the industry of so-called professional video game journalism. Watching your videos is always a treat. Thank you.
I bought my Wii U last April, and actually haven't hit a point where I regret it. I was worried the new Zelda wouldn't get a port, but it did. My issue with it overall is that it just didn't have the third party support I would have liked, though the ports it did get were great in general. However.. "aftermarket" support is around now, so the Wii U is capable of more if you are willing to muck around with it and enable homebrew. System supports Gamecube already, since it has the virtual Wii in it, so a frontend can run your ISOs. RetroArch cores are being ported and already have excellent compatibility. Slap an SD card in it, and you've got the entire NES, SNES, Genesis, GB/GBC/GBA, and MAME libraries to play. N64 and DS are there too, but that involves injecting stuff into legit games(as the Virtual Console games are literally just containers that hold ROMs) and it gets complicated with compatibility.
As of me writing this (Feb 2022), the true final nail in the coffin for the Wii U is imminent, with the closure of its eShop slated for next year. While many of its best games have seen ports (or worthy successors like Smash Ultimate and Splatoon 2) on the Switch, games that are more reliant on Gamepad gimmicks like Nintendo Land, as well as digital only gems like Affordable Space Adventures are soon going the way of the dodo. George's words still ring true after all these years. The Wii U was a console for cool dudes who wanna play fun games, that for whatever reason failed to get a lot of those cool dudes on board. Not to mention it was a homebrew powerhouse thanks to the secret Gamecube compatibility built in. It's also worth mentioning that the 3DS is bound to the same fate. Despite being far more successful than the Wii U, I feel like it's still similarly underappreciated. It's easy to forget that the 3DS was the last bastion of true handheld gaming, before smartphones and bulky hybrid portables like the Switch (and maybe Steam Deck) took over. An affordable, pocket-sized device home to a variety of top-notch games, as well as full backwards compatibility with the juggernaut that is the original DS library. Combine that with a decent selection of downloadable GB games via Virtual Console, and you have a system that can play every mainline Pokemon game (save for the GBA titles) up through Ultra Sun & Moon. Throw a DS Lite into the mix to not only fill in the GBA gap, but transfer any Pokemon from pretty much any generation all the way up to US&M. Which brings me to the elephant in the room: with the death of the 3DS and Wii U eShops, comes the death of Virtual Console. Nintendo's current legacy offerings revolve around a cheap but controversial paid online subscription in the vein of PS+, that includes a sloooowwwly growing library of NES and SNES games as a "free bonus." When the last-gen eShops bite the dust, not only will there be no way to buy and truly own (well as close as you can get to "owning" digital media anyways) most of those games, but many games, especially for other consoles, will become legally unavailable until Nintendo decides the bring them to Switch, which could take who-knows-how-long. The Switch has been out for roughly 5 years, and they JUST put Earthbound on it this month. A tiny selection of N64 games were added a few months back as part of a pricey higher-tier subscription, and 1st party Game Boy games are nowhere in sight. Wanna play Link's Awakening? Well once the $6 3DS VC release is gone, your only options are either the $60 remake on Switch, or the $60 anniversary G&W, if you can still find one in stock that is. And good luck with anything on the more modern side. The only 1st party Gamecube game on Switch so far is (er, was) Mario Sunshine, released as part of a $60 Mario compilation, which is no longer for sale. The Switch is a pretty cool system. Home to some of Nintendo's best 1st party games ever, and an impressive technical feat for a tiny $300 tablet from 2017. But between its weak retro offerings, faulty controller joysticks, and bulky not-so-portable form factor, I can't help but lament Nintendo's choice to abandon all that came before it so soon. If you still have a Wii U or 3DS, mod it. (And do it now because the current best method for 3DS requires a free eShop download) If you have a decent PC, give emulators like Cemu and Citra a shot. No matter how many games you've already played on these systems, how many you panic buy during the few months left, or how icky you feel about piracy, you're still probably gonna regret missing out on some real cool games for these real cool systems one way or another.
I’m glad Wii U exists. You can play Wii games on it if you already don’t have a Wii. U can play games on the game pad and watch tv at the same time and make use of Wii Controllers. Plus it was a good prep for switch. I love this console. Sure maybe it was a stop gap between the Wii and Switch but I had fun playing it. And still do.
I just want to play Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together on my Switch one day.. When the day that allows the switch to run basically anything! This thing is the perfect apparatus (or would be if they find out how to make it run current PS4 games as well). Everything needs to *switch* to both portable and home console.
"I've been a reluctant fan of controller gimmicks ever since I realized the PS3 controller looks exactly like the PS1 controller." That may be true, but Sony was also trying out their own gimmicks with the PS Move, and now with VR. The difference is, while those are also niche gimmicks that make awesome games/gameplay, they were smart enough not to sell their entire console based on them. They had actual games for the majority that didn't care and that way were able to take the punch when they realized those gimmicks are way too niche to sell. The Xbox 360 wouldn't have sold NEARLY as much if they only had the Kinect and no controller. In my opinion, they would have crashed and burned just like the Wii U did.
I'll still never forget the E3 where they announced Mario Kart 8 and Smash 4. Those trailers still give me chills and I bought a Wii U specifically for those two games. (Plus Nintendo Land is the most fun I have ever fucking played with a group of friends. All my grad school buddies loved it and we played till 6am screaming our heads off. We honestly felt like kids again.)
With the way the Switch launch has been going right now, that's the market Nintendo been trying to isolate; Gamers who felt isolated by the Wii U's lackluster success.
xNavyxBrutex I've got one, but I didn't get a Wii U, and I have an idea to have backwards compatibilty for the Switch a reality, but that would require talking to someone who works with Nintendo.
Oscar McCormack That would be awesome, but the problem is the different media that each console supports, the only option would be emulation and how well the switch could handle that.
All I can say is one thing that I know. When I bought the Wii U, I was a much happier kid than when I bought the Xbox one which was a fucking disappointment.
I own a Wii U, I'm kind of a gamer, and I keep up on gaming news, yet I still learned a ton from this video. This guy is very insightful and clearly knows his stuff. I need to see more of his content soon.
Zombi U is a true treasure. The multi plat. port didn't do it justice. The gamepad functionality is a crucial part of it all. In the end I'm glad I got the Wii U. It still brought me DK:Tropical Freeze, Mario 3D world and Splatoon. Plus, soon it's one of those cool novelty consoles :P
Without trying to diminishing the I feel like most of the "unique controller gimmicks" you mentioned were already set by the PSP Vita and the 3DS (and if we really want to be pedantic, Mobile Phones) a few years earlier, but noone will make an eulogy for the Vita... Don't worry Vita, I still love you. You are a great system, don't let anyone fucking tell you otherwise!
That fine tune gyro aiming is exactly what sold me on the Steam Controller. After falling in love with it (I already loved IR aiming on the Wii) I figured that if no other dev was going to put in gyro aiming in the game engine then I would do it myself with configuration software.
I'm still mad that Nintendo cut out all of the gamepad features for the Wii U version of BotW. They made the game play objectively worse all for the sake of marketing, they didn't want anyone to think for a second that the Wii U version could be in any way shape or form better than the Switch version.
My only criticism is no mention of Xenoblade X. You nailed exactly what happened with the Wii U and why it failed, and all the untapped potential it had. You nailed the fact that it was the lack of sales spike in 2014 that killed it. I still remember the Wii U being the only solid library in 2014. I will always keep mine for Xenoblade X and Smash Bros and backwards compatibility (never owned a gamecube), and the pIatinumgames (when I get them). I hope the Switch gets to take advantage of it's uniqueness, and the same for whatever follows the 3ds.
My guess is that Fallout 4, Metal Gear Solid V and The Witcher 3 all released in the same year. The combined power of those three names shoved every other open-world game, nay game out of the spotlight for the later half of 2015 and early half of 2016. At least from my viewpoint.
Ghost_Drive Never in my life have I ever criticized a game for having TOO MUCH content, but I think Xenoblade X takes it. Too many little things you can do that seem optional and boring repetitive side quests make completing the game a real chore. By chapter 5 I had to take a year long break. It feels extremely tedious to have to go through every menu to upgrade gear, arts, skills, classes, and tons of other options I had no idea existed. I love how open the game is but at times it feels way too overwhelming, after finally getting back to this game I'm completely lost. I just found out that you could upgrade weapons, those things you regularly give away for better gear.
Omg! I was so glad to see ZombiU! I recently picked it up because I wanted to grab all the Wii U titles I still needed to play and that showed up. The Gamepad Gimmick was honestly one of the best features for it, and although I am still not done it (so spooky!), I will continue to finish it as soon as I can. Was also sad to hear about ZombiU 2 being cancelled. Nintendoland is awesome as well! Did not expect it to be as good as it was when I first played it!
Standing above the crowd He had a voice that was strong and loud We'll miss him We'll miss him Ranting and pointing his finger At everything but his heart We'll miss him We'll miss him We are gonna miss him We are gonna miss him
Carl Munny If you listened to the latest TOVG podcast episode this last Saturday, George went on to say that he was very underwhelmed with Xenoblade Chronicles X
Thank you Gorge! you remind me I need to watch Death at the Funeral sometime in the near future. Also, I will most likely buy a used WII U before the Switch . And finally, taking Jimmy's suggestions for the name of the video. Nice job! *thumbs up*
I think the biggest thing that was wrong with the Wii U was that it came out during an era where Nintendo were being both pushy about hardware gimmicks and unwilling to cater to the core gamer with more than breadcrumbs at a time.
My ears perked up when I heard you mention Elite Beat Agents. I loved that game, and it's Japanese originator Ouendan so much. Another great episode, George!
The wii u is a smash machine. The tv button was the most icon feature to me. It was super convenient for changing inputs, lowering volume. I hope the new model of the swich gets these fetures. Also swich still doesent have netflix or youtube so.....facepalm. Wii U can still play games online for free....
NES controllers worked well and it became the standard SNES controllers were great but they needed to evolve to have a stick and more shoulder buttons N64´s was stupid Gamecube controller was freaking fantastic but Nintendo felt the weird need to change.
Kurostyle21 change isn't always good just because is a change, that's why people prefer the gamecube controller,to any other nintendo controller, because it works.
+Rad Dykal Or too scared to innovate in fear of failure. You remember the raction gimmicks to the Wii? Playstation 3's Six Axis controller, Playstation Move and Xbox Kinect? They were short lived and sucked ass. Gotta hand it to Nintendo for risking their legacy and business with mercurial inventions, while gimmicky and cocky, they still seeded ideas into the gaming industry saving it back in the 80's.
While the GC controller is good for games like melee or mario, I wouldn't say it's "fantastic". Fighting games that need the D-pad wouldn't work well on it, and shooters are kind of wonky as well because of the c-stick. On the other hand the playstation controller works well for most types of games so they didn't need to change.
IMO the Wii U pro controller is the best of the bunch, the symmetry of the PS2 with the grip of the XBox, it also came with the longest USB/mini-usb charging cable of any of the console manufacturers. This from a gamer who went from PS2 then Xbox360 to PC (and bought all the cables needed to use console controllers on PC).
This is the probably that we will always fight with. If you are waiting for your product to get hugely popular and successful before deciding to put the effort into putting out some amazing features then it's all on you that your console flopped. Put out the awesome stuff and the glory will come, wait until the glory comes first and you'll never have it.
I remember being so excited getting my Wii U because Zelda U had been announced to come out a year later and I just couldn't wait. It was basically the only reason I bought a Wii U (although Smash has been great). Several delays of Zelda later, come release day, I just bought a switch to play it instead. The reason I bought the Wii U had basically become irrelevant. That being said, I did love the Wii U and its entire concept. To this day I refuse to sell it due to all the virtual console Games I have for it
As hard as the wii U flopped i'll never regret buying one in 2016. I will always turn it back on for a nice day Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles X or Mario Maker. And in a year or two when the switch has enough exclusives to justify it i'll y a switch as well i'm waiting for Fire emblem and silently praying for a Monster Hunter game :)
The wiiU is actually my favorite console of the last 2-3 generations, granted i loved the ps2 era but that is talking games not console. dispite me having the fewest games for this thing it still has by far the most playtime. i hope it never breaks and i need to pick up some games before they go out of stock. I just love this system.
it actually kind of depresses me on how short the life was for the Wii U, i loved the selection of games it had, it was very "with friends" friendly, ill never forget all the good times I had with it and still have.
Fine tune aim with controller gyro is actually a major feature of the Steam Controller, if you didn't know already. It can be done by assigning the gyro to control the mouse, dropping the (controller option, not in-game) sensitivity down to 10% of the touchpad's, and having the gyro activate on touch (without click) of the right touchpad.
At launch, I immediately knew what the Wii U was and my first impression was "why would I buy a DS/3DS that is forced to be hooked on the TV?". With the 3DS on the market that also utilizes touch screen, having the 2 screens close to each to make it much easier to check both screens at the same time, actually portable and not required to be plugged into a TV screen, the Wii U was doomed to fail at the start.
Nintendo has always been about Fun over Money. That's why they always try weird stuff with their consoles and handhelds. They can't make a new mario game without throwing in a strange feature or power-up.
+projackX : No, Nintendo has always been about money, the difference is that instead of overhyping they make good products. if they werent about money they would leave youtube alone, for example. as someone who loves Nintendo, I have to agree with +Adrían Vergara
Nintendo is very paranoid with their IPs. I can't say I blame them. It's really all they have left. The general public has never really latched onto the idea of playing video games with a controller that wasn't the standard. The Wii got people thinking but it still ended with the "Best games" normally being ones you could just play with a pro-controller or had simple motions. if Nintendo was all about money they would just make a PS4/Xbone but with nintendo games and everyone would be on board. While I do think it's shitty that they are messing with videos, it was also very clear from day 1 that they wanted to work with people and not against them. It's the idea that videos and fangames can replace the original product. The idea of "Why buy the game when I can just watch it/play something just like it?" Again, I think it's totally shitty how it's going down but I can at least understand where they're coming from.
@projackX, Don't be so naive, dude. It is ALWAYS about the money, and Nintendo just so happens to be very bad at taking advantage of the huge 1st part titles they own by making horrible decisions for their consoles and marketing image in general (Including their horrible attitude toward free advertising.)
They wouldn't make a ps4 or a one becuase their fan base like them precisely because they are different, and the other people already have a ps4 xone. the gamecoube was pretty much another ps2, but no one bought it because it wasn't wanted. Don't get me wrong. I understand they want to make money, they are a company after all, but they are still a company.
For me it just wasnt fun to play. The controller wasnt fun or ergonomic. It felt like it should be portable. It wasnt used well like pikmin didnt use the touchscreen for rts commanding. It needed more rts games and other things like it
solarplexus7 Doesn't matter though, a great game regardless of controller gimmicks is bound to be remembered and in some cases be considered timeless. I think controller gimmicks when done right can create experiences that are memorable, in a good way. Players can come back to games with good controller gimmicks and be like, "Oh man, this game is fun,". Unless the game sucks.
Exactly, I hate when gimmicks get in the way of the gameplay. It CAN be useful, but only when you're not forcing the player into the gimmick. MH3U was a good example on how to use the gamepad well, you can customize the touch screen to show you whatever the hell you want it to show, be it the map, your inventory, your health or nothing if you would rather have all that information on the screen, and it just works because no one is forced into using a gimmick that they could potentially dislike, avoiding a huge part of your audience being alianated. That's why the Switch is being way more sucessful than the Wii U, because the gimmicks on that console are actually useful instead of being a detriment to the overall enjoyement. Being able to get my home console and turning it into a portable device is incredibly useful, touch screen and motion control gimmicks? Not so much.
All depends how much you enjoy controller gimmicks, I will be a lot less interested in Nintendo's consoles if they ever go with the boring dualshock 4 or xbone style controllers because the thing about the gamepad and wiimotes is they are fun simply to use you don't need to be doing something fun with them, heck tax returns would be more enjoyable with the wiimote and gamepad because they are fun to hold and use in a way that's really hard to do.
@solarplexus7 I would go a step further and say just how badly they'll age because inevitably emulation is going to be the only way to play them. I already kind of hate DS emulation because of the two screens garbage and because Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow is so bad to play on an emulator due to how bosses work. That's the possible greatest change they made with the Switch imo, finally back to single display. The future of Switch will be great, as you won't have to worry about managing a second screen and just get a highly upscaled and rendered game, a true update on the switch's games. That is years after the switch is gone. I mean look at Zelda BOTW on Wii U. It already looks leagues better than the switch version if you emulate it (and has faster load times b/c the Wii U version was more optimized).
I think you're wrong about over inflating the value of controller gimmicks, because the "gimmicks" of the WiiU with the 5th player doing something unique, the remote play on the gamepad, the motion aiming that was (sometimes) useful, the inventory control and the offscreen minimaps were all features that added a substance and a functionality. The Wii was often gimmicky, and most motion controls offered could effortlessly be replaced by a more reliable and easier button press. But the WiiU was not a gimmicky console, it was a console with a set of unique functions that no gaming system before or since has offered. I don't know why people failed to see that. For the Luigi's Mansion Nintendo Land game while smashed with my best mates on cheap vodka, for playing Windwaker in bed while I was ill, and for not having to exclude the 5th friend in our group when he showed up and we were playing Sonic and All Stars, I loved the the WiiU.
I'm going to get Persona 5 after my exams and coursework is done, which is mid May. But yeah, I've had perhaps 4 or 5 games I've been interested in on the PS4 come out since 2014, and 2 of those games were just fancy graphicsed 60fps versions of PS3 games that I'd rather not play all blurrylike and 25fpslike.
+Rossy I know what you mean. I only played the ps4 for Bloodborne haha its still one of my favorite games but Smash Bros has more replay value since I get to play that with my brothers. The last game I played on Playstation was For Honor, which I liked. I consider it a fighting game pretty much haha but, I stopped playing it due to Smash
With all the extra content (costumes, weapons) of the Wii U version, it's still possible to make that argument compared to the increased perfs of the PC port, but it's not as clear-cut.
Isaac Argesmith REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and so on and so forth.
My partner and I ended up picking a wii u a couple months back and we are loving it. They do not usually play games, but the wii u has sparked their interest in the medium. I'm honestly surprised mario maker was not mentioned. I really do think this was the wii u's "swan song". It made level creating a snappy experience and the wii u's controller gimmick made it possible. Good review as per usual just don't count out mario maker !
I absolutely applaud Nintendo's decision to still release Breath of the Wild on the Wii U. Even after the Wii U hurt Nintendo's performance over the years they still supported the small fan base that wanted to play Zelda on the Wii U. I'm one of those people and I thank Nintendo for that.
Actually on your Google Image point at 1:14, you can see a few images of just the console by itself. It seems to be the only actual image, and it's a super minor point, but still.
Despite having bought the Switch, I've actually been playing a fair bit of Wii U games recently. I missed titles like Super Mario World 3D and Splatoon back when they were released, and they're quite cheap now.
the Wii U is a wonderful example of the ways poor marketing can create insurmountable sales problems, even in spite of a good product. It's also shows us Nintendo's habitually bad timing.
nowhereweareagain Agree. Many people thought the WiiU was a tablet accessory for the original Wii.
From "If we use Wii in the name, it would sell more" to "it failed because it had Wii in the name"
Don't get me wrong, I love the Wii U, but god damn it I agree with you. It sold poorly.
I love my Wii U, but I understand why it never caught on. Marketing really is the difference between success and failure.
I get the feeling the Wii U is our generation's Dreamcast - it was great, but in another timeline (one so close you can almost taste it) it could have been so much more.
One thing I never understood was the way they handled the eShop. do u understand it now? what you're saying is like if Toyota gave you free oil changes forever just because you owned one in 1992.
@OrchidEleven Nope lol. It's more like if your Toyota used two tanks of oil and you can't just move oil from one tank to the other without paying, even though you still own the oil. Or something.
@@uknownada nah it's more like buying a second Toyota 5 years later and expecting to use the same fluids and stuff from the old one.
@OrchidEleven But
The same fluids are in the new one tho
@@uknownada why do you feel entitled to never paying for oil again just because you bought it once
Never selling my WiiU it has some of my favorite games and my wii library. It also has a ton of my PC mods.
And yes its marketing was freaking dumb.
Chu E. I sold my wii u to my friend. happiest day in my wii u ownership.
I had Bayonetta 2, wonderful 101, xenoblade chronicles x, mario maker and more. None of it ended up resonating with me. Sometimes people don't like the things you like.
SpitefulToast i get you sometimes people just have shit tastes cant blame you
Yeah, exactly.

The wii u was really boned, huh? I never had that chance to look at its pros, so I could only notice its cons. Thank, George. You're a swell fellow
_what shall you do now?_
Not buy a wii-u. It still has some pretty have cons, and a rather small library of exclusive games.
_game over_
I think the single line at around 11:21 in the video sums up how I felt about Nintendo's approach to the Wii U
"they didn't want to go through the trouble of doing so"
what a disappointment of a console.

OOOHHHHHH now I get it...
Yea it's strange
To me he sounds permanently bored.
@superbunnyhop George, if you see this, I love you do brotha. This wasn't meant as an insult, just an observation :) keep doing what you're doing!
This thing was "a lot of fun"...
I still think its worth keeping a Wii U around the house. Hell just for playing any Wii games it works great in backwards compatibility.
You basically said everything I ever felt about the Wii U. It was a head of it's time, but had none of the support it needed to really shine as a console.
Superb video mate. The send off this disappointing but lovable machine deserved :)
The most frustrating aspect of this is that the WiiU becomes artificially expensive through collectors so it only gets harder to play the games.
Really? I wonder how much I can make off of it...
I truly love your videos! Keep up the great work. :)
MajorPhilGraves love that Cate Archer avatar.
It's sad to me that the Wii U died such a painful death. I share your love and intrigue of hardware gimmicks, and I wish that the Wii U could have hadmore games that would use its touchscreen.
Can't wait for Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo on the Switch.
Very glad to see someone actually do anything other than briefly mention Nintendo Land. Very underrated game.
I love the team attractions! Octopus and Yoshi, too.
Hope pirates do gnarly stuff with it in the coming years.
getrad64 You can already play GameCube games in HD and widescreen, which is nice.
Cemu released compatibility updates just to get Zelda working, the WiiU will live on in one form or another
I just want to play Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together on my Switch one day.. When the day that allows the switch to run basically anything! This thing is the perfect apparatus (or would be if they find out how to make it run current PS4 games as well). Everything needs to *switch* to both portable and home console.
Nintendo never fail to leave in retarded arbitrary execution bugs these days. It's weird.
getrad64 cemu already runs amazingly
"I've been a reluctant fan of controller gimmicks ever since I realized the PS3 controller looks exactly like the PS1 controller."
That may be true, but Sony was also trying out their own gimmicks with the PS Move, and now with VR.
I'm liking that minus8 in the background
When?
Kandriod 2001 The music between 3:10 and 6:00 . Intentional or not.
eman1269 Despite it being a Mario theme, I associate it with Minus8 too... XD
Well it is from the mario wiiu game.
Went in the comments just to see if someone was thinking the same.
I love my Wii U, right now it's the only reason that I haven't bought a Switch.
I suppose, but in my opinion is not worth it right now. Besides here in Mexico the price for the Nintendo Switch is like 500USD.
MarioTGP Joke's on you with such a response.
With the way the Switch launch has been going right now, that's the market Nintendo been trying to isolate; Gamers who felt isolated by the Wii U's lackluster success.
xNavyxBrutex
I've got one, but I didn't get a Wii U, and I have an idea to have backwards compatibilty for the Switch a reality, but that would require talking to someone who works with Nintendo.
Oscar McCormack
That would be awesome, but the problem is the different media that each console supports, the only option would be emulation and how well the switch could handle that.
This was really, really good. One of my favourite videos in a very long time. Captured the Wii U's life perfectly.
To this day - I still have switched on my Wii U more than my Xbox One.
Say what you want about Nintendo as a company, but they make damn good games.
I have well over 2000+ hours on the Wii U. Love the console dearly, and still play it to this day.
All I can say is one thing that I know.
When I bought the Wii U, I was a much happier kid than when I bought the Xbox one which was a fucking disappointment.
The only way the Wii U will be remembered is by the sound of the ambulance going "Wii U Wii U" in the distance as people laugh at it's corpse.
Where the fuck is the noodle shot?
Too crass to show during a funeral
Shukterhouse Jive it isnt crass at all whachu talkin anout, its the deepest thing ever
Shotgun Gabe my theory is the metal gear dance from his metal gear pachinko episode will take over the noodle shot
That sounds like a sex move.
Man I'm glad someone else enjoyed that Luigi's Mansion minigame. My friends and I pumped hours and hours into that.
It may be dead, but still plays 2017 game of the year...
Rayman and Lego City, too (for the whole "GamePad Justice" thing). I'll even throw Sonic Lost World in there (use the GamePad for 2P VS. mode).
This video is right. It hurts. There was support here for every system Nintendo ever made. It could've been their LAST system.
I was so curious to what the Sheikiah Slate-you know, the GamePad-would do. So sad...
Not seeing a single clip from Wonderful 101 made me shed a single tear.
X had really great gameplay, but a ton of boring menus to navigate. I really don't get how this game managed to get under the radar.
My guess is that Fallout 4, Metal Gear Solid V and The Witcher 3 all released in the same year. The combined power of those three names shoved every other open-world game, nay game out of the spotlight for the later half of 2015 and early half of 2016. At least from my viewpoint.
+Ghost_Drive That's accurate
Did not expect it to be as good as it was when I first played it!
the wii u was a fuck ton of fun. the problem was that it was victim to nintendo's terrible marketing decisions.
Standing above the crowd
He had a voice that was strong and loud
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
We are gonna miss him
We are gonna miss him
should've mentioned xenoblade chronicles x. that game was awesome :D
Carl Munny but its intimidating as hell. Its massive! too massive! i still cant finish it
Carl Munny If you listened to the latest TOVG podcast episode this last Saturday, George went on to say that he was very underwhelmed with Xenoblade Chronicles X
Eww no, Xenoblade X sucked, the original Xenoblade is a masterpiece though, I'm excited for Xenoblade 2.
It's perfect for those with absolutely no respect for their own time.
pikachu896 XCX is a masterpiece, a different kind of masterpiece that XC is.
Thank you Gorge! you remind me I need to watch Death at the Funeral sometime in the near future. Also, I will most likely buy a used WII U before the Switch . And finally, taking Jimmy's suggestions for the name of the video. Nice job! *thumbs up*
bounced on my boys noodle to this for hours!
n-n-n-noodle shot
You're a gross person Drew Carey.
You seem to have proper etiquette
RIP Wii U. You were too great for this world.
Nothing as sad as a Wii U controller covered in dust 😭
Video opens up showing a super dusty WiiU Game Pad and Pro Controller, I look over at mine and they look the same. 10/10 relatable content
All this video did was make me want to plug in my Wii U again.
The opening shot of the dusty ass wiiu game pad is so fitting
I think the biggest thing that was wrong with the Wii U was that it came out during an era where Nintendo were being both pushy about hardware gimmicks and unwilling to cater to the core gamer with more than breadcrumbs at a time.
My ears perked up when I heard you mention Elite Beat Agents. I loved that game, and it's Japanese originator Ouendan so much. Another great episode, George!

Wiiu has the most comfortable controller and it really deserved more support the gamepad was amazing
The wii u is a smash machine.
The tv button was the most icon feature to me. It was super convenient for changing inputs, lowering volume.
I hope the new model of the swich gets these fetures. Also swich still doesent have netflix or youtube so.....facepalm. Wii U can still play games online for free....
Does Switch have Crunchyroll yet?
11:15 "Nintendo didn't want to go to the trouble." That pretty much describes their current problem right now.
The Playstation controller stayed the same because it *works.*
NES controllers worked well and it became the standard
SNES controllers were great but they needed to evolve to have a stick and more shoulder buttons
N64´s was stupid
Gamecube controller was freaking fantastic but Nintendo felt the weird need to change.
Mario maker was made for the Wiiu
BaneDain There were many of them too, and some were objectively better than Mario Maker, though I love the use of the gamepad.
WHOA WHAT?! care to elaborate?
When you binge superbunnyhops mgs videos today, and he comes out with a new video today. #winning
Grant Connolly I literally was watching his Eulogy for P.T. when this came out haha
it actually kind of depresses me on how short the life was for the Wii U, i loved the selection of games it had, it was very "with friends" friendly, ill never forget all the good times I had with it and still have.
Probably the best video title you've ever came up with
Ocarinajoe98 He stole the name from the Game Informer Podcast.
11:34: I love old man George complaining about backwards compatibility.
dang, was hoping for a nier review. Well this is still nice
aren't you looking for Clemps 's videos?
Fine tune aim with controller gyro is actually a major feature of the Steam Controller, if you didn't know already. It can be done by assigning the gyro to control the mouse, dropping the (controller option, not in-game) sensitivity down to 10% of the touchpad's, and having the gyro activate on touch (without click) of the right touchpad.
I liked my Wii U
You're one of the few RUclipsrs whose videos I'll "Like" before watching just to remind myself to finish watching them. XD Good stuff, as always!
My Wii U is really good at collecting dust
At launch, I immediately knew what the Wii U was and my first impression was "why would I buy a DS/3DS that is forced to be hooked on the TV?".
With the 3DS on the market that also utilizes touch screen, having the 2 screens close to each to make it much easier to check both screens at the same time, actually portable and not required to be plugged into a TV screen, the Wii U was doomed to fail at the start.
Nintendo's business decisions make no sense. Does that company want money?
The idea of "Why buy the game when I can just watch it/play something just like it?"
Again, I think it's totally shitty how it's going down but I can at least understand where they're coming from.
Even with Breath of the Wild out, Wonderful 101 will always be my favorite Wii U game. R.I.P Wii U.
For me it just wasnt fun to play. The controller wasnt fun or ergonomic. It felt like it should be portable. It wasnt used well like pikmin didnt use the touchscreen for rts commanding. It needed more rts games and other things like it
really appreciate those game title annotations
Completely disagree that the wiiU specific games will age better. They'll forever feel like "oh remember when we bought into controller gimmicks?"
solarplexus7 Doesn't matter though, a great game regardless of controller gimmicks is bound to be remembered and in some cases be considered timeless.
@solarplexus7
I would go a step further and say just how badly they'll age because inevitably emulation is going to be the only way to play them.
It already looks leagues better than the switch version if you emulate it (and has faster load times b/c the Wii U version was more optimized).
the game pad really was very comfortable....
Is that so?
Tbh I found myself more starved of games for my PS4 than my WiiU.
+Rossy jesus...That's just sad. Especially considering how many good games the machine has.
Tbh the good games the system has are the ones I played plus all the other good games that are better on my PC. I haven't missed out on anything.
This has to be one of your best videos yet!
Awesome job!
I'm also mad that more games don't use gyro aiming. I mean the PS4 can already do it, so why not?
Splatoon, Nintendo land, smash. The Wii-U still has so much replay value; will wait out the switch.
It's not a bad console, it was just marketed horribly.
That Luigi's mansion minigame was one of the most fun ive had with family.
7:08
"definitive port of bayonetta"
I guess you were making this before the PC port.
Fly Boy To be fair that port came out of nowhere
Well, the PC Port doesn't come with the Nintendo Costumes.
And mods to put those back in don't count, even if it did exist.
With all the extra content (costumes, weapons) of the Wii U version, it's still possible to make that argument compared to the increased perfs of the PC port, but it's not as clear-cut.
The Aeon Offspring
but they can still be put in. *snaps fingers, then gives you a cheeky smile
Oh right, mods are a thing.
4:36 Sonic Lost World and Wonderful 101 also technically both fit into this category.
Normies ruining my Nintendo
Sumsare if anything you are the normie dude, people are playing resident evil 7 and outlast 2 and what are you playing? Zelda?
Nintendo's a normie?
WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-

Don't tread on Wii.

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and so on and so forth.
Xenoblade chronicles x was one of the best JRPGs of this gen and it was only on Wii u. I very much enjoyed my Wii u
Eulogy spelling has failed.
I blame the EU.
I still use my Wii U to watch Crunchyroll because ads just don't load on it
I thought Bayonetta 2 was a 3rd party exclusive.
SWITCH he meant third party exclusives that used the GamePad well
S. Maht Ahh, ok. I didn't catch that. thanks for clarifying that.
Bayonetta 2 isn't really a 3rd party exclusive since it was funded and published by Nintendo. That technically makes it 1st or at least 2nd party.
Well you could play Bayonetta with one hand... that's a great use -if you know what I mean-
the wii u is my favorite system, makes me sick to think how truly awesome it could have been if Nintendo would have done it right....
