I had the honor of being Franco's book editor. I always had a good time when he came to Chicago to promote and talk about his books. Really nice guy and funny, too. He loved to joke around.
If it as the book I read back in 1979 or 1980 "Weight Training and Bodybuilding: A Complete Guide for Young Athletes", Congratulations as that was an outstanding book. I got really strong from following Franco's excellent advice.
@@firstnamelastname3558 What's your point? You are comparing Franco in 81 to Dorian in 90s Franco was under 200 pounds, Dorian was over 250? Besides, he literally said he saw Franco in 81 and they were the biggest lats he had ever seen. I am sure he saw bigger lats since 1981.
That was funny. Franco Columbu was the real life Arnold little twin, not Danny DeVitto. He studied a lot and even wrote a very nice book about nutrition for bodybuilders.

According to Ellington Darden Franco was the real deal. The story goes Arnold and Franco turned up to Lake Helen, Florida to meet Arthur Jones and test his Nautilus equipment. Arnold couldn't take the intensity Jones had bodybuilders training, but to the surprise of Jones Franco could take absolutely everything Jones threw at him. Apparently during that time Arnold spoke very little English, but Jones spoke Italian and Franco acted as translator.
"Arnold couldn't take the intensity" ... Respectfully, I don't believe that. More likely is Arnold quit the workout because he quickly concluded that this one set per bodypart per week idea was a waste of time
Franco is clearly off-cycle at this point. Never knew he was so witty. With his charisma and good looks, I wonder why he never got farther in the popular culture. Probably his height, and the fact that he was overshadowed by Arnold's boisterous personality.
I remember seeing this on TV. It was part of an Entertainment Tonight style show. I had already been bodybuilding for a year or two. My favorite part is when Franco tells the dude "Flex Skip" as he poses and dude replies "I AM flexing Franco!" But what's up with that music?
I met him shortly after his 81 Olympia win at an event in Tacoma, in which myself and my buddy were the only people who showed up. This was well before the sport and the look had any real acceptance. He'd already come down 20 pounds from his competition weight so he could fit into real clothing again. Nice guy, but you could tell he was frustrated by how few people showed up. I've seen the same thing with author signings back before the internet could get the word out.
Around that same time, he was doing a book tour and came to a book store in Twelve Oaks Mall in Michigan. I was about 16 and lifted weights with my best friend so his mom took us to see Franco. There were about 20 - 30 people there and he was taking questions. The biggest two guys were way in back, quiet, next to us. Franco points our way and says "You two!" At first I thought he meant us! Then he repeats, "You two! Big Guys! Don't bulk up! Do not bulk up!" It's over 40 years later and I can still hear Franco's accent, "Don't bulk up!"
But you know seeing Gold's back in the day, even a Planet Fitness has better equipment. It was more about the atmosphere. There's nothing like it today. I saw Franco a couple of times when he did a "seminar" at the sports department at Sears. RIP Franco!
At least the body builders of that era gave Is new body builders Hope that that could be achieved naturally and so many of us trained for so many years before we found out those guys were on skeleroids
Being s short bodybuilder myself in the 1980s, I idolized Franco & followed his training. I believe Franco at 5-5 is the shortest bodybuilder to win the Mr Olympia? There's another 5-5 guy - Flex Lewis - that won 7 Mr. Olympia "212" division titles - which was a newly created category for competitor's weighing under 212 lbs, but doesn't count as an overall Mr Olympia title.
