Advent: More Than a Chocolate Calendar

  • What does Advent mean to you? A time to put the lights up, gift shop, and eat chocolate? Or is it something more? Fr. Mike says it’s good to prepare ourselves for Christmas during Advent, but ultimately that’s not what the liturgical season is about. Mary, Joseph, and Jesus had to stay in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn. Will you use this season to make room for Jesus in your life?

@End Time Deceptions Decoded. You need more education in regards to the true Catholic Faith. Read the gospel and pray to God to give you the grace of truth and light. Scott Hahn's books will dispel a lot of misinformation.

I like the duscussion about "making room for Jesus." For many years I was "too busy" to go to church. But I noticed that when I returned to church, God helped me prioritize and I was less stressed, even when everything didn't get done. He showed me what's important and what I can "let go" of. It's teaching me to surrender, to rely on God, and to trust where He takes me.

Always has a great way of bringing it together at the end. Saying " no" more to the earthly things and things of the flesh, only to say "yes" to what is unseen and eternal. Love it still in 2021.

The Father and the Son are the Parents of the Holy Spirit, if many churches are correct. The Trinity is a Family-- two Parents and a Progeny, if many churches are correct. In the Book of Job which is part of the bible, the Lord is compared to a father and also a mother with a womb. "From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens"--Job 38:29. Saying that the "Father and the Son are the Parents of the Holy Spirit" is simply another way of saying that the Holy Spirit "proceeds from the Father and the Son" which has been official Catholic Church teaching for centuries. According to the Catholic Church, the Son is begotten from the Father. If this is true, the Father is the Father (Parent) of the Son. According to the Church, the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son.If this is true, the Father and the Son are the Parents of the Holy Spirit. Of course, the scriptures are vague if the Holy Spirit is the 3rd or 1st or 2nd Person of the Trinity--whichever of these is true, the First Person and the Second Person may be the Parents of the Third.
Parent definition 1a from Merriam-Webster dictionary: one that begets or brings forth offspring.

Thank you for this post Father. I only clicked on this link because my 3
year old son had his first advent chocolate yesterday and wanted to
hear what you had to say, but this post has touched me very much.
Our second son was stillborn in October, and it has been both an absolutely terrible month of suffering for us, but also one of joy as we turned to God to offer up our suffering. And as we were putting up some lights and the Christmas tree last night, we felt both happy and sad, and wondered if we should even be doing this, or maybe "tone down" how we celebrate Christmas this year.
But what you said about devout being "firm", and joy as not being equal to simple happiness but a "choice to be happy independent of circumstances"... I think this is very powerful, and is exactly what I needed to hear.
Thank you for this post again, and know that it will help a small Catholic family in Singapore get though this Christmas season a little bit better.

This is why i tend to plug off less of christmas commercial music, into classic catholic songs, hymns. Or chants, which are the best! Brings alot more of joy and happyness into the home. While i light my scented candles at night. Or during the day i light up myrh insense. It always reminds me of Jesus. When they brought him myrh. The rosary is also another comfy way to snuggle in the blankets. :-)

I loved what you said about making room for Jesus Fr. Mike! We love your videos and show them to our children regularly.
Although Advent is not technically a penitential season, it is still penitential in nature. It used to be called a "mini-lent." "The liturgical color for Advent is purple, just like Lent-as both are seasons that prepare us for great feast days. Also Advent (like Lent) includes an element of penance in the sense of preparing, quieting and disciplining our hearts for the full joy of Christmas. This penitential dimension is expressed through the color purple, but also through the restrained manner of decorating the church and altar: "During Advent the floral decoration of the altar should be marked by a moderation suited to the character of this time of year, without expressing in anticipation the full joy of the Nativity of the Lord…[also] the use of the organ and other musical instruments should be marked by a [similar] moderation…" (GIRM n. 305 and n. 313)"
For the Byzantine Rite, which is in communion with Rome, it is definitely penitential and they still follow fasting rules.
There is lots of Advent music out there. I attempt to ALMOST exclusively listen to Advent music until Christmas. I have a whole play list on spotify. Start searching under "Advent at Ephesus" by the Benedictines of Mary and then there are "Advent Carol's from St. John's" by the Choir of St. John's College.
I also liked this article explaining the penitential nature of Advent. parentingmortification.blogspot.com/2014/12/on-advent-penitential-season.html .

JOY is the abiding sense of well being that comes from knowing that the Father knows me and loves me. JOY is a choice. My circumstances can be painful but I can still have joy by abiding in the absolute certainty that I have Him. The goal of Advent is not to have a merry merry Christmas. Ultimately it is to be able to worship Him, to prepare for His second coming. Whenever we pray, Jesus is present in us, it is His intermediary coming into our lives. If Jesus were to come to you now, would He have any room in your life?

Oh, I wish he didn't say that Advent is not a penitential season, because it is! It's a time of prayer and penance mingled with joyful expectation - a time to prepare our souls for the 2nd coming of Christ. A holy time for us to get ready to meet our Judge. It makes sense to prepare by amending one's life, doing acts of penance and works of charity. Don't let this opportunity to grow in holiness pass you by!

If Advent is not penitential, then why purple?

You are correct, Jerry - the violet vestments used during Advent and Lent are a sign of penance, sacrifice and preparation.

Violet is the color of penance. Purple is the color of royalty. Although they often look very much alike, there is a traditional difference. Indeed, the purple has a more reddish tone, traditionally. In ecclesiastical terms, properly, "purple" is used with regard to imperial and prelatial rank, rather than liturgy. We use the word "violet" for the purplish color used in vestments, etc. We use violet for Advent precisely because it IS a penitential season. It has a lighter character than Lent, but it is a penitential season. Fr. Mike is wrong in his presentation here. The preparation involved in this season is a penitential one, directed toward conversion and penance. Simply read the readings for the season, such as about St. John the Baptist, etc. God bless---Fr. Robert Miskell

Thank you Father!! I agree with Father Mike that's it is a joyful season but also, if we knew Jesus' 2nd coming would be Dec 24, 2018 - everyone would make sure to go to confession during Advent. I receive so much joy from the sacrament of penance. Advent is a beautiful season of joy and penance!

Celebrating Jesus sharing in our humanity, preparing for the second coming, if this does not involve a penitential heart then why the penitential service every Advent, those who met Christ were not only cured bodily but spiritually, the first Sunday of Advent the Gospel is always about judgment, why purgatory if to meet God one must be purified. True, the principal spirit of Advent is Hope and Faith and a Joyful union with Christ, but because it is not listed as a penitential season in the CCC does not negate the penitential implications and traditions of the Church. St Alphonsus writes about this, and so have many others including Pope Benedict. You wouldn’t receive Jesus Christ in Holy Communion without Confession of grave sins, that would be sacrilege. Meeting Christ in the second coming is no different, stay on guard, we know not the day, nor the hour.

I think as a former atheist, i conflated the concept of materialistic logic/belief and spiritual belief in a similar way to how joy is conflated with happiness. I became disillusioned by the precepts atheists often accept on faith and authority, even though they'll deny that even science relies on faith and authority, and made a choice to have faith in Christ and the authority of God instead. I'm still learning so much about the catholic faith but really want to know as much as possible before i get baptized and join the church.

Why do you have an Irish Brog when you introduce yourself?
Second, I am so happy that I recently learned that I can be a Deacon.
