LYRICS
Smeared black ink... your palms are sweaty
And I'm barely listening to last demands
I'm staring at the asphalt wondering what's buried underneath
Where I am
Where I am
I'll wear my badge... a vinyl sticker with big block letters adherent to my chest
That tells your new friends I am a visitor here...
I am not permanent
And the only thing keeping me dry is
Where I am
Where I am
Where I am
You seem so out of context in this gaudy apartment complex
A stranger with your door key explaining that I am just visiting
And I am finally seeing
Why I was the one worth leaving
Why I was the one worth leaving
D.C. sleeps alone tonight
Where I am
Where I am
Where I am
You seem so out of context in this gaudy apartment complex
A stranger with your door key explaining that I am just visiting
And I am finally seeing
Why I was the one worth leaving
Why I was the one worth leaving
Where I am
Where I am
Where I am
The district sleeps alone tonight after the bars turn out their lights
And send the autos swerving into the loneliest evening
And I am finally seeing
Why I was the one worth leaving
Why I was the one worth leaving
Why I was the one worth leaving
Why I was the one worth leaving

Everyone in their college dorm, early 2000's, just trying to find themselves to this. It's a Masterpiece
For real 💯 lol 😆
Setuju,,ini adalah salah satu karya yang mampu memacu semangat untuk menjalani hidup
Best comment of the year!
Same thing here while I was a college student in 2019
Not just college students. I was 27 when this came out and it spoke directly to the situation I was in. Dating a 22 year old woman who was so deep into that lifestyle that many people in their early 20's who didn't grow up in a city, then move to a big city find themselves in...endless partying, careless monitoring of who she hung around with and allowed in our apt, drug & sex experimentation. I was so beyond that kind of living but was so into her. I broke it off and it broke my heart and then so did this song. It's a masterpiece.
P.S. I saw her last year. She's married, completely normal and very happy and so am I with my wife. Thankfully.
I always love watching Ben Gibbard live coz he always looks like he's JUST about to play his guitar, but doesn't lol
hah! so true
Trueeeeeeee
This is way too accurate. I remember when I saw him in 2017 and he did a lot of singing and had the guitar the whole time.
@@Kaitivere I like it coz he might only play one single chord an entire song but it's like he switches to like 10 other chords during as if he's going to play something else lol
Holy shit, you're right, why is it giving me anxiety seeing him like that hahaha
I never understand how he sings so perfectly while dancing that off beat
Hah this made me laugh.
He’s probably a savant.
Years of doing it badly. He's got it down to perfection!
He’s dancing to a metronome in his ear. Which is awesome….timing is everything. Or I’m wrong….last I checked I’m not a rock star. 😂
It's crazy how good they are live. A band like this relying mostly on laptops, synths etc can go south so easily. Seriously impressed.
15+ years later and yes, absolutely, I will still drop everything to vibe with some Postal Service
Put my work down today to do the exact same thing.
Any time, any where
Thank for bringing us all back together to a simpler more familiar time. we are all just visitors here.
This band changed my musical direction like a boomerang.
Death Cab's Photo Album was the first indie artist CD I ever bought and I really didn't like it. Before that, I was pretty much exclusively into pop punk, but I remember playing GTA3 and having the CD on in the background on endless loop and after a week, I was addicted and it was the very start of my deep journey into indie music of all types. Benjamin Gibbard single handedly changed my entire musical tastes practically overnight.
Yeah me too. They would blast them working at Urban Outfitters in NYC in 2005. At first I was like WTF is all this new style of music. And then it all got its hooks into me.
Such an underrated comment. Deserves more likes.
Same, I was into metal before hearing them and discovered so many other great indie and electronic groups through them! Never even realized that until now!
That first harmony gives me chills like it did the first time I heard it.
I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard it for the first time. Almost 18 years ago.
Right!?
To me, this song is a cold winter night when i was 18, walking along the soft crunchy snow along the street lights along my street
That’s more street lights by Kanye
Yes. This is most definitely a late fall/winter song. It goes back during the spring/summer.
This was the only song that kept me from depression before beginning the 10th grade. Almost fall.
Along snow AND lights?!
@@MSP_aviation lol
Blowing my mind right now that there's a live performance of the Postal Service. Holy crap. I totally slept on this tour
Bro, I was at this show. It was seriously magical. There's a whole DVD called "Everything Will Change" that this is from. I re-watched it a couple times and feel like I received a gift from the universe to have been there.
They're touring the US again next year for the album 20th anniversary
Hope you aren't missing the one going on now. Best concert I ever been to
Can't wait for big shows to come back. Watching Jenny respond to the crowd's adoration with that big smile... love that she's not too cool to show her appreciation!
I won't lie...when I heard the crowd's reaction and saw that smile on her face...I couldn't help but smile, too. Lol. Just a beautiful showing of love towards one of the key voices in the group and for this song in particular.
20 years later and still my favorite song ever. Most played song on my iPod then and now. So stoked for September!
I hope she will be with them in seattle
Being a teenager in the 2000’s and listening to this then was such a vibe as the music was just amazing with the right type of beat. Now in my mid 30’s and the lyrics make so much more sense. I’m finally seeing why I was the one worth leaving..
This song is my first love over and over again.
Never before have two people looked like they sounded more than these two. I love them.
0:49 that smile though! ❤
This song will always remind me of my bus ride home late at night from Kirkland to Seattle in the early 2000’s It was on my iPod on my night bus playlist.
Give Up is such a masterpiece
Remember listening to this on repeat with an old mp3 player in high school, just staring at the brick library walls - pondering my existence and if there's anyone out there for me. This song does a stellar job at personifying the existential loneliness you experience while coming of age. Still a banger and I'm 33 now.
32... Same.... still alone tho damnit
Jenny Lewis tearing it up!!
I never never thought this would be so good live. I thought this was a "laptop band!" wow
This still gives me chills so many years later.
Dude TPS really made my high school years some of the best years of my life.
Jenny Lewis = Awesome
I'm gonna sound 13 (I'm actually 30) but this song is like an altar. It carries so many memories and wishes for the future like a prayer even if you're not religious. If I die of old age I'd put this on a playlist to listen to so my soul can dance to life one more time before the next chapter (or I'll just decay)
Fuxking mood
This track and your band is a huge part of my adolescents life, and English was even less my strong suit at this time, but been able to understand the whole lyrics and listening to this live, just gave me goosebumps from head to toes!
It took me so far back and even without understanding the lyrics back in the day, this tracks gave me hope!
Thanks for the experience 💜
Much love to all the music lovers 💜 and the artists/therapist ^^,
Wow. This is like a remastered version of any live set I've watched. This was just another level. Thank you
Simply an awesome and brilliant band 😊❤️🎶🎼Benjamin Gibbard is an amazing song writer.
MAN, i wish I was at this show.
Love this song. I didn't realize until years after first hearing this song that Jenny Lewis sang backing and lead vocals for The Postal Service.
Just saw this live over the weekend. Stadium crowd. Everyone went f’ing nuts. This song will forever resonate.
Saw them at Primavera Sound, Spain, that year. I'm from Mexico and we never got the chance to see them here, so I feel very fortunate.
@DSP HistoricalSociety Not that much now.
@BMO I was living there at the time, so I couldn’t miss the chance.
Man, what a great song...
i was not expecting this
Love this masterpiece "why I was the one worth leaving!!!!"
Absolute greatest song and album ever produced. I noticed not a single human actually played any kind of instrument. I started to get second hand embarrassment but snapped out of it with how good this song is.
I love this song ❤
I hadn't heard this song in nearly 20 yrs, and never heard, nor saw a live version of this song. A guy I worked with at a mall in Ohio introduced them to me when I was in my early 20s and my musical experience was never the same. Occasionally, this song and the songs 'such great heights' and 'we will become silhouettes' pop in my head. A recent Justin Beiber song had a similar sound to 'the district sleeps alone' and had me thinking about listening to it. And so...here I am. Thanks, Justin Beiber. Lol
You're welcome. That's what he would probably say. Closure.
So, so, so, so, so good.
I am finally seeing why I was the one worth leaving🤯🥺
This has to be the second-most beautiful experience of my life (after the birth/general existence of my son) in the past 17 years! Seriously!❤️
I can't tell you lot how much I appreciate this (full) live album some 17 F*#¢ing YEARS after I thought I'd never see more than EP (if that) from The Postal Service EVER again!🤯
Thank you sooooooo much!!! This has been an unusually moving/emotional experience to hear live performances of some of my favorite/most valued music of all time nearly TWO DECADES later!😂😢 (Seriously 😬).❤️❤️❤️❤️
YESSSS. The Postal Service FTW!
soo good
Amazing, of course. And Ben sounded incredible.
So incredible live!!
I remember listening to in collrge, Id just moved into a shitty 1970s apartment complex while I was going to art school and I'd just broken up with my boyfriend who never visited me. It was his birthday.
ahhh, this was SO good! thank you!
i will always love this band!
Yes yes YES🎵🧨🔥✅
I caught a date as well on this tour, in Paris, so glad, such a great time.
nothing but bangers
perfect performance
Tremendo tema...!!! Que recuerdos
Wonderful!!! ❤️
As yesterday as today as always.. ❤
Ah this brings back memories. Wild
Perfect.
Underrated song and band
Those fuckin' harmonies tho.
this is so good
This is so good
So good
What a show…🎉🎉🎉
This album came out the same time my only long term gf moved to DC to start her life. I would drive to the District and literally place a name sticker on my chest entering her apartment complex.. We had the best Springs and Summers biking the area and pounding beers.
I hated that apartment complex and never liked DC again lol
Melting 🫠
Despite my best efforts, I still love you.
See you in Phoenix next year!
Yessss🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Never fails to make me teary eyed!
I really hope that TPS will do a 20 year reunion tour!
You wished it into existence.
A living legend
Omg how did you do that? Teach me your waysss
I came here for this comment. 😂
You manifested this shit! 💪
Nice to see one of my favourite songwriters, Laura Burhenn (of The Mynabirds), on keyboard.
I remember seeing them live and it brought back memories of college. The nostalgia is real.
This is so gorgeous. So beautifully shot. Will remember it forever.
Why are they so good live
I always wondered if Ben ever thought about saying "on your shirt is mom's spaghetti" after the 'palms are sweaty' line?
I was lucky enough to catch this tour in KC. Was a great show.
What?? When were they in KC?? Totally missed it.
July, 2013 at the Midland theatre.
Epic fail on my part
This reminds me of my time as a Hairdresser back in the days💃🙏❤
🔥 🔥 🔥
I'll be found you when I was 15 I'll be 30 in a few months planning on listening till I die. I love postal and death cab. I found postal first - Tacoma native
The vocal effects don't over power the song.
I was at this show :)
I wish they would reform and make some more music.. Their stuff was so amazing.. I was always hoping for a 2nd album..
Fucking nailed it!!!!!
I was there :)
i just need to hear those three chords live and everything will be alright
do you know where i can find the full concert?? anyone!!!
If the band were formed today, The Cloud Service??
I mean postal services around the world still exist, so...
The Dropbox
thank you ben gibbard and ms lewis
Is there going to be a DVD of this?
There is one. It's called Everything Will Change.
Only 2 likes?? Wow
Where was I two years ago?!
Could they have any better backup singers????
This is hot shit.
I was here
Jeez do you think they will play this song at their show at the Anthem in DC in September hmmmm lol I envision a massive sing along lol
So...is that Jenny Lewis?
is that Jenny Lewis!!
Affirmative.
And worth mentioning Laura Burhenn from The Mynabirds on the keys
@@rookietrucker5114 That's what I needed to know. Those harmonies are next level. I'll have to look them up.
This song is about moving to Washington, D.C.
Close, visiting someone that moved there.
I liked when this album came out and ben gibbard was a chubby nerd instead of a hot zaddy. Good for him though; he probably prefers the latter. Song still slaps hard af. Check out their 2003 performance at KCRW on RUclips.
Yoooooo save me from my neighbors
They prob think I’m AWESOME
