I am from Perlis. But live in KL because of work. Had live in KL for more than 10 years. But trust me, nothing can beat Perlis. My heart is always longing and yearning for Perlis. When I brokedown or lost my spirit, I will take a bus trip back to Perlis. And I will just walk and walk along the green paddy fields and stare at them for hours. It is my way of healing. My ultimate wish is to buy a land in Perlis, build a small house here and settle down. Pray for me guys.

I got one proverb from Malay (Peribahasa) for iChang and Jimmy because u guys surrounded by paddy field area, it sound like this 'ikut resmi padi, semakin tunduk semakin berisi' means more knowledgeable or higher rank you become, more humble you behave. The Malay take paddy plant as example how to act in our life, when paddy plant become bigger and mature, it will falls down.

That's not roti, that's *lempeng,* my favorite breakfast when I was small, living in kampung with my parents! My mom liked to make all those traditional malay food, kuihs and dishes. We either ate it with chicken/fish/beef/mutton curry or masak lemak chilli api (the yellow colored coconut gravy unique to negeri sembilan) but the secret was the curry/masak lemak was overnight leftover and reheated, then it felt more kaw, yum! 😋
Or, even more yummy, we also ate it with grated young coconut flesh plus a generous sprinkle of our traditional gula melaka or gula enau (mind you, it's not gula merah or brown sugar, which doesn't taste creamy, and which feels a bit bitter). Of course as a small kid, sometimes it was eaten together with condensed milk 😅
You guys have to learn the more proper way to eat that *ikan kembung* (I don't think it's mackerel family, but not sure) because the way ichang hacked the fish, that got the tulang (bones) all over the place, one day you're gonna get some stuck in your throat because they are hidden within the gravy.
Anyway, kudos to you guys for this discovery, this is the type of eatery, we malays call them *warung* and they are usually roadside, hence *warung tepi jalan* because this is the kind where you can sample the local traditional foods and dishes. Good job! 👍

Speaking of which, there’s one favourite “Malay Peribahasa” that I would like to share to both Ichang and Jimmy. The peribahasa is “ Ikut resmi padi, makin berisi makin tunduk”. Translate directly, it would mean, “be like paddy, the more fatter (as it contains rice), the more it bow down (to the earth as depicted in the picture clipped in the video)”. The proper meaning for the peribahasa is, the more knowlegable (higher status) a person is, the more humble the person should be (something like that). I think this sharing very proper, judging, Ichang can relate to paddy very closely (remind of her hometown). One more thing is, resmi padi is kinda closely related to Japanese as well, due to the act of “bowing down” that became a part of your cultural identity 😂 A wholesome content as always and keep em coming Ichang and Jimmy!

The field on the left is the rice field, and the small green offshoot you see in the water is the seedlings of the rice crop. It was a very early stage of rice plant growing but due to the heavy rain they are slightly submerged, then due to that some seedlings died due to being eaten by snails. That's why you see uneven spot on that field.
Then the field on your right with the tall plant is just grass and weeds, the field is not properly maintained or likely they just leave it like that and didn't plant any rice

The weed in the paddy field is called "menerung"... Kinda high tall wetland grass... The local used to harvest & dried it to make a floor mat or related craft @ woven basket / bag etc... Anyway there's a term for coconut flakes / grated - kelapa parut. Santan - coconut milk, fried grated coconut & grind well, it becomes kerisik. If you boil / cook the santan till it ' pecah minyak', you may get a coconut oil & the residue of the oil, we called it 'tahi minyak' & it taste so good with koleh kacang. That is the difference of northern style curry ( Perlis right up to Perak ) where else Kelantan & Terengganu's curry a bit sweeter. I-Chang should also try another type of dish eaten with sambal and or coconut shavings which is boiled cassava. That is traditional kampung dish & difficult to find. Jimmy is clever to eat the glutinous rice, coconut shavings & fermented fish. That is one dish difficult to find too. As for the paddy field, now is the monsoon season, always raining. Most paddy field will get 'drowned' 😂😂😂, so no planting

I know this place!!! It's Warung Tepi Sawah! OMG you're in Perlis 👏 I'll be there in 2 weeks for my convocation 😆 Next time you guys should visit Perlis during Harum Manis Manggo season where you can taste the sweetness of the local manggo which is none like other. If you're lucky you got to eat durian also during that season 😋 Btw enjoy your stay at Perlis 😄

Wow welcome to Perlis tiniest state in Malaysia! So glad you made it to this state as this place has amazed us with it's delicious local food and friendly ppl so many times since moving here 6 years ago!
PS so sorry you fell! Hopefully the owner will place warning signs and improve the safety of those stairs. You could've had a very serious injury!

It is salted mackerel fish, my favourite salted fish. I would it that salted fish with white rice and fried egg, pour a little bit of soy sauce on top of egg and rice. I could also used the soy sauce separately by mixing it with slice onions and chilies. Very quick and easy menu especially for single people on a budget.

We have proverbs about rice paddy,
'ikut resmi padi, semakin menunduk semakin berisi' direct translation.
'follow like rice paddy, the more paddy bow down to earth, the more better they are.
