    Air brakes do not determine whether or not a CDL is required…. GVWR does. You can rent a truck from Penske with air brakes and not need a CDL. (Just an example).

      pax capacity and usage: placarding for HAZMAT may require a CDL regardless of GVWR

    • @TrophyHusband
      @TrophyHusband 8 месяцев назад +3

      Agreed. If Air Brakes would require a CDL there are a whole of geezers behind the wheel of Class A motorhomes that are flaunting the law.
      GVWR also isn't a factor (in most states). Some of those Class A motorhomes tip the scales at > 40,000; no CDL required.
      The key is "Commercial." If you are making money with the rig, get yo'self a CDL.
      Pro Tip: Many insurers will give you a discount on a large "truck" chassis rig if you do, in fact, have a valid CDL (even if it's just a Class 'C' license).

      Yeah that's an extremely extremely common misconception... I still hear that all the time at Work,itut it does hold true that 95% of the trucks that have them require them anyway for other reasons

    I am planning on building a tiny house on a 48' gooseneck trailer, and this truck is what I have been considering buying to pull the house. I like that this truck is still small enough to be driven stand alone

    5th wheel is really the way to go on a trailer that size compared to a bumper pull riding on a ball hitch. That's a wiggly nightmare on a windy day and trucks going by will try to suck you over into their lane as they pass by in the fast lane. Way more stable and comfortable drive with a 5th wheel.

    CDL & air brake endorsements vary from state to state. In the state I live in no CDL is required if you register the truck as a RV. You can drive a class 8 without a CDL as long as it is registered as an RV. I know Texas requires an air brake endorsement.

    I just purchased a 2022 Freightliner M2 106 Sport Chassis with air brakes installed by the privious owner and I asked my sales guy, doi I need a CDL to operate my personal use or "Not for Hire" Sport Chassis and he stated I do not need a CDL to operate my SC with air brakes? I live in MN not sure if that make a differnece. Also, prices must have been much higher a year ago, you can purchase a brand new well appointed SC right now for $190K-$220K.

    Air brake does not equate to needing a CDL. Anyone can rent a 26’ truck from Penske or wherever, they’ll have air brakes. CDL is about weight. 26000 lbs or above is commercial. Worth knowing if you plan to get on the highway: don’t get over that weight in a rental if you aren’t commercially licensed, because if you hit a weight station, a state police officer will ruin your day.

    0:58 for a CDL to be required first and foremost you must be using the vehicle for commerce (at least in every state I've lived in, check the law in your own state.). For example the law will say a CDL is required for "any COMMERCIAL vehicle with....." then lists brakes and weights, etc. If the vehicle isn't being used for commerce you can stop reading at that point, the weights/air brake requirements don't apply to you. One exception is usually the hazmat section just states "any vehicle" not "any commercial vehicle" so hazmat may upgrade the licensing requirement even if used for private use. Sometimes if you're carrying enough passengers (15+) this will also make it CDL regardless of if it's for commerce.
    This is why people talk about the "RV" exception and why RV's don't require a CDL, they aren't being used for commerce. It isn't that the law explicitly says "RV's dont require a CDL" (usually) its that the law says only vehicles used for commerce do. This is also why a "farm exception" DOES often explicitly exist because in that case it IS being used for commerce so a specific exception is needed to be given (usually within X miles of your farm that you own and operate).
    Also for the record, if you ARE using it for commerce you'll exceed weight ratings with something like this almost immediately and you'll need a CDL. Even a 1 ton pickup towing almost anything will almost immediately surpass weight rating requirements for a CDL, much less something of this size. If you're needing this much truck, and you're using it for commerce, you're going to need a CDL. It isn't like you're buying this thing to pull a 5,000 lb trailer.

    The interior is kind of junk on these for how much they want for one. Freightliner isn't known to be the best there anyway compared to say, Paccar. Heavier duty rigs though compared to a big 3 1-ton. IMO not practical enough for every day use compared to a pickup and you rarely see anybody trucking or hot-shotting with one. They're kind of just luxury toys for guys who want to haul their big 5th wheel or pony trailer in style.

      Bigger trucks bigger breaks. In Texas we need a class B CDL at least if the GWR is 26,001 pounds or more. ✌️ ☮️ and it’s just a bumper pool if they chase he just run who cares. 🥷🏿

    • @BrandonLeech
      @BrandonLeech Год назад

      As long as the GVWR of the unit is not more than 26,000 you technically don't need a CDL to drive it even if it has air brakes. However, hook a trailer to it and go hauling for hire and you'd need a class A license without a doubt. Only way around that is if it was registered as an RV for personal/not for hire use and state laws vary on that.

    • @lghdg
      @lghdg Год назад

    Goodness this video seems to be filled with questionable/misleading information. I’m not sure if you just threw out numbers to increase views or what but you should really make an effort to be at least somewhat accurate. I was just looking at these at NFR in Vegas last week and brand new they were selling between $189k and $229k, you claimed $300-350k. You absolutely do not need a cdl just because they have air breaks yet you claim you do. You can find them used and just a few years old with under 50k miles all day long for $125-150k yet you claimed way higher! You claimed you liked driving these way more because in your ram you had to fill up every 30-40 minutes. I have a f350 with a 36 gallon fuel tank and tow a 16k trailer and can go 4-5 hours before I need fuel! So either your getting a 1 mile a gallon in fuel, you have a 4 gallon fuel tank in your truck or you just flat out don’t know what the heck you’re talking about.

    "I bought this used"
    "This thing rattles..."
    Not mutually exclusive phrases..
    You are a value shopper as evidenced by buying used and insuring through a insurance company being sued by the State Of California for illegally steering good drivers into assigned risk pool carriers owned by Mercury but under a different name to cover up their scam, and while the insurance company choice does not relate to the vibration issue, the "value shopper" may.
    There are different levels of quality in diesel fuels and distributors. Diesel owning value shoppers tend to buy the lowest cost diesel fuel whose low quality causes incomplete combustion which cascades into vibration issues. Using the wrong fuel can cause long-term damage to a vehicle.
    Buy more tissue--- enough to dry your tears and stop your dash from rattling your instruments to death.
