  • Humphrey Bogart is one of the most recognizable actors of classic Hollywood. His career had a shaky start, but after years of perseverance, he became a star that would burn for decades. He was part of the Rat Pack, which included other legends like Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Sinatra. Nearly 50 years after his death, the American Film Institute named him the greatest male actor of classic American cinema in 1999.

    He was launched into stardom after the 1941 films High Sierra and The Maltese Falcon, and he soon became known for his ability to portray private detectives in noir films. Just a year later, in 1942, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Casablanca. In 1951, he acted alongside Katherine Hepburn in the film African Queen and finally earned his Academy Award for Best Actor. Overall, his career spanned a total of 35 years, and he continued to act until his failing health forced him to retire.
    On screen, Humphrey Bogart was calm, cool, and collected. To the outside eye, he lived a life of perfect success. But behind the scenes, he dealt with serious struggles. Four marriages, alcoholism, and a scandalous affair all contributed to a turbulent personal life. And while he may have been a handsome, popular actor during the height of his career, he was accused of domestic abuse during his marriages.
    In today’s video, we’re going to take a look at Humphrey Bogart’s three disastrous marriages, as well as a scandalous affair that would end in both heartbreak and deep romance. Make sure you stick around because we’re also going to reveal how Humphrey Bogart’s first marriage to Helen Menken ended in success for Bogart and utter tragedy for his ex-wife. My late mother and I were voracious readers and our favorite time to spend with each other was either reading or watching TCM to watch all the old classics. The makers of this channel have the most interesting content of any of the movie history channels, often revealing lesser known facts about the actors and actresses. The narration is excellent, too!

    I saw dozens of interviews with Bacall on her husband, (many with tears), as she explained her missing Boggy & their love was deep, the fact she stayed with him during the long awful illness that eventually killed him is further testimony of her devotion to him, he's also been seen to talk of Bacall with much love. their desire for each other even shows on the screen together.
    I am sure they had issues like any marriage, but someone can have had several failed & bad marriages & finally step into an almost perfect one, as rare as it seems!
    I truly believe Bogart & Bacall we're in love and had as good of a marriage as possible, the evidence shows, but no one can ever say 100%. One thing for sure was the chemistry onscreen between them was possibly the finest between a man and a woman in the golden era of Hollywood.

      It was a sham marriage. Lauren Bacall was having an affair with Frank Sinatra the whole time Humphrey Bogart was sick and as soon as he died, Lauren wanted to marry Frank Sinatra immediately, but Frank called it off. During Humphrey's entire marriage to Lauren, he was seeing the same woman he had been having an affair with for many years named Verita Thompson.

    I think from everything I have read that Bogart found true happiness with Lauren Bacall, and she in turn found true love and security with him. With their two children, Stephen and Leslie, they seemed to be a happy family. It seems that in this case the fourth marriage was the "charm."

Lauren Bacall was having an affair with Frank Sinatra and she immediately wanted to marry Frank as soon as Humphrey Bogart died, but Frank called it off. Humphrey Bogart is my favorite actor of all time! It seems to me that he and Lauren Bacall were a happy couple and he learned his past lessons. Plus she always seemed to have her act together. It's very sad that he was lost to her at such a young age, but it seems she was a pretty tough broad - and I think that's why he fell in love with her. He'll never be forgotten!

    Actually.... Leslie Howard and Bogart played the Petrified Forest on stage. When the movie rights were bought and Leslie Howard got the lead in the movie they wanted someone else to play Bogarts part. Howard refused to make the movie without Bogart and so it happened the studio caved to the demand of Leslie Howard... Humphrey Bogart became a sex symbol when he played Rick in Casablanca LOL He was 44 years old and believed it to be ridiculous. :-)

    Bogie had a long time secret lover, Verita Thompson his Tuopee maker (yes he wore one) as she was also a hair dresser to the stars of Hollywood, she gifted him a Gold Gruen watch which was inscribed: To Bogie, Love Vera. They met at the wrap party for Casablaca in 1942 and stayed lovers all through his marriage to Bacall untill his death in 1957, the book "Bogie and Me" was written about this secret love.

      I'm surprised this video didn't mention Verita Thompson or Frank Sinatra. In her memoir, Thompson seemed to think, with good reason, that as Bogart's marriage to Mayo Methot disintegrated, he would marry her. Bacall comes off as a late dark horse entry who slithered across the finish line first. Thompson's marriage to a service man broke up because he came home by surprise and caught Verita and Bogie taking a shower together. Warner Brothers had to help cover that up, probably paying off the husband to go quietly.

      Lauren Bacall had too much respect and loyalty towards Bogart to have strayed from him during their marriage. The romance with Frank Sinatra began after Bogart's death, and he was overheard proposing to her at a restaurant in Hollywood. Betty admitted to Louella Parsons that she had said yes to his proposal, however, once the press became involved, Sinatra left Hollywood, seems he was having second thoughts about his proposal!

They were the loves of each other’s lives. But, maybe even more importantly, they were also extremely compatible, and they had a very happy marriage. Full of great care, concern and respect for one another. It also seems like Bacall mourned his death the rest of her life. And never again found lasting happiness with another man.

    This channel is always looking for and promoting gossip about famous film stars. Bogart and Bacall were VERY HAPPY. She’s written about it and every time she’s interviewed it’s patently obvious they loved each other deeply. So give over trying to infer they weren’t happy behind the scenes. Her word trumps anything this channel can think it knows or writes that contradicts Bacall.

    `Verita Bouvaire Thompson, was Bogart's wig maker.... and long-time mistress.She was a vivacious brunette who could out-drink and out-swear the big screen legend. He had a 17-year affair with Bogart, which began two years 'before he met Bacall' on the set of 1944's To Have and Have Not, and continued right up until his end in 1957.
    Yes he was bald and wore wigs....beautifully made by Miss Thompson. For starters, the hair immortalized on Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon was actually a hairpiece.
    According to the autobiography Bogie and Me: A Love Story, Verita Thompson would carry ten different toupees for him in her briefcase. In fact, Thompson made them herself: she was one of Hollywood’s foremost experts in toupees. Her work contributed to Bogart’s iconic film appearances. So. Bogart seems the type to always have more than one woman at a time. He was married three times before Miss Bacall and had many a public fight with one wife in particular who herself would turn up with bruises on her face. She did stab him in the arm once but yes he was a violet drunk also. So we did romance a lot about him didn't we?

    • @janadeubner9883
      @janadeubner9883 Год назад +1

      I found Verita's book fascinating and yes it did give me a different perspective of Bogie. I guess it made him more human to me. Don't forget Metho stabbed him in the back and the fixers had to take care of that cover up! In their battles, they gave as good as they got! They weren't known as "The Battling Bogarts" for nothing!

      what can you expect, people such as actors and singers fall for the false made personas in the Hollywood industry. Once that ideal persona is broken to reality, they search for indulgence somewhere else. The character they portray to the public and paparazzi is artificial and different to their real raw selves

      Some of these comments are fact, some fiction, in Lauren Bacall's book she states that the relationship with Sinatra began after Bogart's death. I think she respected and was too devoted to Bogart to betray him by being unfaithful!

    • @janadeubner9883
      @janadeubner9883 Год назад

      What I got from Bacall's first book was she loved to flirt and did so openly. She hinted at some kind of relationship with Sinatra while Bogie was on his sick bed. It was enough that Bogie started to get jealous of them, even though he told her to go see Sinatra's act in Palm Springs. He was too ill to go with her. What kind of wife does that? Her comment of having a much older husband was more understanding shocked me. So, I agree with you Margo.

      His third wife Mayo Methot was mentally unstable, and her alcoholism made her condition worse. When they were drunk and fought it was a free for all. Mayo even stabbed Bogie once. They were known as the Battling Bogarts. Fighting physically, tearing up furniture and the house. I bet it was hard being a neighbor to all that!
