- ►Your BMW's steering system is essential in keeping it traveling down the road in a safe and efficient manner. When your steering rack begins to fail, one of the easiest symptoms to spot is leaking coming from the rack itself. When looking at the rack from above, you can spot grime and fluid buildup on the rack itself, as well as actual fluid spots on the ground underneath your vehicle. Other symptoms of a failing steering rack are, excessive play in the steering, feeling like your car is wandering on slightly uneven roads, or the most noticeable - a loud clunk when you turn the wheel. If you have any of these symptoms, it's a good indication that you should service your BMW's steering rack sooner rather than later. Andrew Johnson, a catalog associate here at FCP Euro, has put together a comprehensive kit to help you get this DIY steering rack job done on your E90 or E80 chassis BMW.

Thank you for guidance on this steering issue.
And I must say, your workshop looks great.
It certainly fits the vision we had for it! Glad you like it, and that the video helped!
Thank you for the content!
Excellent.that really useful tutorial... Thanks FCP
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful!
You save my life with your video!!! Thank you it was professional and nicely done.My name is Eddie Palacios, I'm a mobile Mechanic from Midland, Tx. I did subscribe . Awsome!!!!!!
I love your contents FCP euro. Big fan here. Way under rated 'How to' guides. Is this similar for the E92 M3 ?
Thanks, MTLJack! We appreciate it! This should be the same basic process on the E92 M3.
Excellent video
Thanks so much Eric!
Nice video as usual, can you post more e34 stuff? I would like to know, What type of plastic is used in BMW E34 on the bumper? Thanks
Hello. Thnx for this perfect detailed explanation on how to replace the damaged rack. I have a bmw e87 116i and my rack is for the junkyard! I am going to replace it and i want to ask if the rack from e90 will fit to my e87... I think both of models use the same rack.
Thank For a great video Andrew! Kindly, let me know where we can see the build list for your car? I am most interested in tire, size selection, and suspension upgrades you might have completed…Many Thanks!
the videos are great, good detail and they move along nicely. love the tools list. itd b nice to get oem part #s
Thanks for watching Enrico, we try and link all of the products used in the video descriptions!
Can you guys do a video detailing the process behind swapping in oem hid headlights?
Hi
great educational skills
i have liked the way you approach the pb.
well done.
Farid
Thanks so much Farid!
Simply true
Take care
Farid :-))
Thanks for the tutorial sir! Question what is your suspension combination on your vehicle plus your wheel and tire size? 🙏🏾🍺
Awesome video. For the steering column the assistant is pushing and pulling on the wheel on the car?
Nice car. Love my 128i. It looks like you have the M3 front control arms and meatier sway bar. Very nice. I'll probably be doing those upgrades myself this summer. Replacing the rear subframe bushings with M3 bushings makes a huge difference, as well, depending on how soft your original bushings are. You might want to do a shifter parts overhaul video, since the shifters end up with a lot of play after 100,000 miles, even if you're gentle, like I am.
Thanks, Doug! You're right, Andrew has his 128i setup for autocross and track-days/spirited driving. That's a great idea on the shifter overhaul video, we will add that to the list!
Thanks for vid. Tell me please, u-joints of lower part of steering column are need to be lubricated?
Great video!! So Ive been struggling trying to figure where I went wrong! I replaced my pump and it leaked all the fluid out and I didnt know and drove it for a couple days. Then the power steering stopped working, no noise or whining. I replaced the pump and the reservoir and still not working, no fluid movement either. Did i ruin the rack somehow?
Guys, as a E82 (& E84) owner, your detailed instruction videos are incredibly helpful. Fantastic work by FCP Euro 👏🏻👏🏻
I really like the way you assemble parts kits for these types of jobs. Awesome and huge kudos to your team.
I'll definitely be purchasing from you again once I have access to my US PO service.
Stay safe, American cousins. 🇨🇦 👋🏻 😷
PS would you recommend replacing the pressure lines when doing this particular job?
Hello, Can you please do a video for active steering? I have an e81, 130i
Best tutorials are fcp. I would have saved the tie rod nuts for when they do the alignment, since one time use.
Have you thought about installing m3/1m rack?
How many hrs should a shop charge you to change a 528i 2012 rack and pinion. Or what is the standard hrs to change a rack and pinion in a 528i 2012.
Quick question, on the old rack it had some leaks around those small steel pipes, can you change the pipes or seal it with an o-ring or any other solution to fix a leak from those pipes where it goes into the rack ? Thanks
Which brand do you recommend when replacing the rack & pinion on a bmw 328i?
Yo question Im upgrading the trw 11 piece kit and I notice doing the front end I haven’t torqued everything but my driver side wheel is pointed 10 o’clock while my passenger side is straight it wasn’t like this 40 minutes ago before doing the driver side. I obviously wasn’t messing the rack at all so I don’t know how it would extend like that there’s no leaking or any other symptoms for it being out. Do you know how this could be fixed? Do I need a new rack or should I try to get an alignment and see what they say about it. My e82 has been on jack for a week now also getting my ball joint pressed in
I think i can use regular hose clamps from autozone... Instead of them wierd clamps. It tighten up the same.
Hello, I have a 2007 e82 and the steering symbol will appear intermittently on dash and steering will be stiff. Sometimes its fine sometimes its not. Can I ask if my e82 is electric power steering? Its 2007 120D. Thanks
ok question when u r bleeding the rack and pump DO U PUT THE KEY IN SLOT WITOUT PRESSING START BUTTON AT FIRST TO TURN WHEELS? OF COURSE WHEELS OFF GROUND..THEN START CAR LATER TO BLEED MORE? I AM WONDERING IF WHEELs will lock up if u dont put key fob in slot without starting car????
Wait a little confused in the video he said the ends need to be torqued to 121nm then later he torqued then down to 165nm. Which is it?
Can Lucas steering stop leak be used to stop the leak for maybe one year or so?
Although before putting the carbon jack it was just drifting to the passenger side hard while my wheels would be straight. Driving it home the next day on roads that dipped (no pot holes) each dip the the road it self like I was in a hammock swaying side to side my head would bobble
Lucky I'll be replacing both DISAs and gaskets when doing this job, I won't have to worry about space as I'll have the intake out
more e90 content!
Plenty more to come Tomas! Stay tuned for me e90 content on the way
E90 is the king!
Please help with advice, BMW E60, 2009 528, 234🐎, N52, on propane gas, bad start when hot, on the third try, everything is ok when cold.
I changed injectors, thermostat, crankshaft sensor, temperature sensor, fuel pump with filter, no sense, gives errors P0420, P0430 and 2EF4. Please help me with advice, I don’t know where to dig anymore.
Can you swap a bmw 1 series steering rack for a 3 series steering rack ?
Hi, can you do a video on replacing the thrust bushing in the electric steering rack? I know there is a repair kit that BMW makes to replace it so it would be good to see a video from you guys explaining how to install it. Just bought the serpentine belt kit from you guys after contacting your customer service team.
We can certainly add that to our DIY list!
does this work with AWD models?
Just ordered the rack today, already did the reservoir.
Nice, happy wrenching Mickey!
Does a leaking steering rack cause low torque ?
Salut moyen d’avoir le liens fonctionnel du kit de réparation ?
FCP Euro is the best
Nah George... you're the best.
Excellent video, thanks. Is changing a rack on a x drive the same process? Thx
Glad you like the video, Jim! The x drive is a bit difference since it has the extra all wheel drive components, but it is a similar process.
Great video.. can you make a video for E90 328xi. Can't find any good videos online.
What kind of video are you looking for Mark? We have a bunch of videos that pertain to a 328xi
@@fcpeuro steering rack replacement.
changing rack can damage steering pump?
I plan on changing just the rack and pinion, do I have to remove the shaft completely or can I let it hang and than re-attach the bottom part to the pinion? I have read about potential clock spring issues which Id want to avoid.
You should be able to re-attach the bottom part to the pinion without removing the shaft if you do not plan on replacing the shaft.
e87 120d 05 ? would that be the same
thanks for the video great content and insructive
Thanks, Fightrec! I would imagine the 120d is the same if not very similar.
I ordered the gasket rings (washers) based on your part numbers for my e92 m3 but they did not match the factory ones. Especially on the bigger bolt. After installing and torquing power steering fluid leaked. Can you confirm e92 m3 gasket rings (washer) part #.
Apologies Vick G if the website lead you in the wrong direction. You are going to need qty 2 of part number 07119906463 for the larger bolt and qty 2 of 07119906464 for the smaller bolt.
You can install an e92 m3/e82 1m rack if you swap the rest of the suspension right? Looking for an upgrade in the ratio. Pretty sure the tie rods are longer.... any ideas?
The M3/1M rack will bolt up with some modification to all RWD E9x E8x 3 series and 1 series. All US market M3/1M racks were Servotronic. This is not plug and play with non M vehicles, and will make steering very heavy at low speeds. We do not recommend this swap if you are not 100% sure you are ok with unassisted low speed steering. The M3 tie rods are longer you will have to use your stock tie rods if you dont have M arms as well. But it IS doable!
thx
Is it ok to use blue loctite on the rack bolts for a extra security. I'm a little OCD when it comes to jobs like this.🤔🧐
You can, just note that it will be more difficult to remove those bolts should you ever have to.
Hi i need help i dont know how buy this cable 3:54
E90 too?
Im not sure if i missed it or not, but did you guys show how to get the steering rack out from the knuckle up top?
use the telescopic steering to pull up from in the car slowly. if the knuckle doesnt release entirely raise vehicle and wack u-joint up with a long striking prybar plus lots of LUBE. preferably ROGO lightning. should pop off make sure helper keeps control of steering wheel
23:52, my tie rod end was replaced 4 years ago, rusted pretty bad, the counter-hold was stripped and I had to cut the bolt off with a saw 🙁
Happens to the best of us 😥
yep... I am in the middle of a 2013 x3 rack swap... both tie rod end ball joint nuts seized and counter holds corroded...... used a 4" cut-off to sheer the nuts off 20 mins and one matco disc. Now im fighting a corroded steering shaft. So much rust in all the wrong places
I’m guessing this would be that same for xi’s
Do you have to replace the steering shaft? I was looking just to replace the rack and pinion along with my tie rods.
Hi Peter, while it is not mandatory, it can certainly be a wear item culprit if you are trying to rid your vehicle of loose steering, and one of those "while your in there" items.
@@fcpeuro thanks for the quick response and info
Would the steering rack be the cause of steering squeak? Can hear it from inside and outside the cabin
Hi Gabriel, while possible a further diagnosis will need to be made, as it could also be a worn bushing or balljoint in your front end.
Nice, i have to do this on my e60, but is way more work than ther E9X or E8X, need to drop the subframe.
ya Fabio that job is not for the faint of heart... good luck when the time comes to tackle it!
@@autohut3720 I have noise and free move on the steering, I go replace the rack and the input shaft.
is this similar to E9X M3 models? I know the rack and pinion different... but having similar body styles/suspension... is it similar? thank you
Yes, it is similar, Denny!
@@fcpeuro I appreciate y'all! easiest and most reliable company to deal with thus far ...
@@fcpeuro by similar, I assume there is just a few connectors for the servotronic mechanism? But overall removal is the same? No need to drop the subframe for the e9x m3? Just the lines, steering shaft, tie rods, and any electrical connectors to the servo?
Why not just use regular screw type hose clamps of the PS reservoir lines?
who said u couldnt
Hey I think your oil filter housing is leaking? I'm sorry this has nothing to do with the steering rack but it's important.
We will let Andrew know... potential N52 Oil Filter housing video on the way perhaps!? Not one you want to let slip by.
I changed my steering rack on my 335. Dsc light and amber brake light came on. Any idea why? Maybe just needs an alignment? Any ideas why?
Hey mate, try turning your wheel all the way to the left and all the way to the right
It could be throwing that off due to poor alignment, but its best to double check that everything is plugged in, you can also try what Matthew said to do. If all else fails, you can have the code reset or disconnect your battery completely for a while and see if it comes back.
Is procedure the same for the 328xi?
xi may be slightly different being all wheel drive.
Awesome job you guys do. Can you watch my 2 latest videos? Having problems on my 335. Help.?
Où petons trouver pour 328xi ?
is there a part number on it that i can look for so i can get the right part?
You can get the kit here: www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-e90-e82-steering-rack-kit-bosch-zf-32106777463kt
I just found one of my rack boots completely full of power steering fluid. So I guess its time for a new rack
You can do it, Big D!
Would Lucas steering stop leak work? Maybe it can hold for 1 year.
Do a rear axle replacement on a e90 335i
We'll add that to the list of DIYs, Dustin!
I have no wander, but my steering position changes. I try to tighten it up, and it stays for a while, but then if I hit a small bump, it changes position...
That is a bit scary, what exactly are you tightening up when that happens? Maybe you are not getting it tight enough?
@@fcpeuro your absolutely right. They were not tight. I thought I tighten them but then my guy friend went to tighten it more like a month later after it loosened again and although it was a struggle, he got it even tighter... i think I need it to be tighten little more cuz 1 bolt was just spinning but ill address that when I lower the subframe...
Is this same for a e90 330i?
I hope so, I haven't been able to find a good video for the e90 n52 rack and pinion removal.
did it on my e90 330 its bout the same bro
@@nathanbremer6140
Does this fit an e92 335xi?
Hi TJ, the idea will be slightly similar; however, your vehicle being an Xdrive model, you have front driveshafts and a differential which will be in the way.
Having a lift just makes this job so much easier, I think I'm gonna have to cough up the labor money for this and just take it somewhere. Which sucks because at how old the car is, the cost of this repair is more than the value of the car
Sorry to hear that, Lori!
There's no space for anything to fit on n55 engine 🤨
Isn't there a drain on the rack itself for the fluid?
Nope.
X1-x6 content
We will get on it!
So many ads
Tell your camera guy to do better job at focusing the damn camera 😂
Take your watch off bro electrical hazard and if it’s a Casio I guess you don’t care
Note to self. Never buy x drive
the focus on the video is atrocious.
similar for a 2011 E90 318i?
Hi i need help i dont know how buy this cable 3:54
