Where do I get the German Fender Beading ? You folks do BEAUTIFUL work !!!! Just got my first Beetle . 65 yrs old ,so never too late . Got a 69 Bug LOVE IT Thanks for the Videos
Yes! You can install the rear fenders from a 1973 VW Beetle (not a Super Beetle), with a large round "elephant footprint" taillights onto a 1957 VW Beetle, since most parts are interchangeable from one year to another. I saw that a 1957 VW Bug with a 1973 fenders, both front and back from 1973 VW Beetle in the car show in Hot August Nights in Reno Nevada from 1989 to 1993 when I used to live in Reno Nevada for 5 years. By the way the 1957 VW Bug was red.
My boyfriend cut one of my German beads.. we went to a car show the other day and he looked under a bug's fender and he got upset. My original beads matched the car color.. the balck ones seem more striking to me.
Hello, does anyone know if you can use and add the front fenders and hood from lets say a 67 or older on a newer Beatle 1970 and up? Sort of a retro conversion? Cheers!
Would the fender beads protect against rust buildup in the joint? You see, i really want my first car to be an old beetle and use it for everyday driving all year around. Just trying to learn the most about the car before purchase. What's your thoughts on this. :)
Hey Chris, why aren't you all painting the fender bead or welt to match the body color? Are you aware that an additive can be put into the paint to make it flexible to paint the bead before it is put on the car? In the old days when factory paint was overn baked enamel and cars used fender welt with the clamshell fenders, the welt was painted at the same time as the body. I have a 72 Beetle Marina Blue and sometime after it was taken out of its 37 year storage, the fender bead was replaced. I am going to do it again but I am putting back painted fender welt.
Beetles from the 50s had black beading, never an off color from the bug. In the 60s they started with the color beading, but they were not painted while on the car, that would cause caking. They were always put on afterwards on the assembly line.
@@classicvwbugs What do you mean by caking? Regarding painting fender welt for American cars. I used to have a 1951 Studebaker Champion with welt between the rear fender and the body. When it was repainted, the painter did the same thing that was done at the factory when the car was painted new. The bead was painted with the fenders loose on the body; with a gap between the two body parts. A few days later over a beer, he showed me a movie of the painting of Studebakers at the factory taken in 1952. In the movie you could see the body, welt, and fender being painted at the same time and then going into the oven. My Studebaker was originally sold at Pitcher Motors in Poughkeepsie, NY on September 19, 1951. This happened to be my first birthday. I didn't find the car until 1970. I grew up in Fishkill, NY and I used to work at Contemporary Classics in Cold Spring, NY back in 1970- 74. I do know that some years you could get replacement welt or beading in colors from Volkswagen and I have seen some advertised on TheSamba and on aircooled.net. I am thinking of purchasing a roll and painting it the body color of my car, Marina Blue (L54D) from a mixed spray can with flex additive; same material used on modern car flexible parts. Then I will loosen the fenders, run a tap through the weld nuts and install new bolts but with added fender washers.
I would NEVER install fender bolts without using ANTISEIZE compound. Inevitably, inexorably these will become rusted. The area is constantly inundated with water. When you go to remove them at some point, they will break off and have to be drilled out and tapped...a lot of extra work. "An ounce of prevention....." You complete it.

I would install a couple of 'guide' studs to assist in the fender install then remove and install the bolts I think this would make it a one man job

Thought welting went between the fenders and the body, and this provided the bead. I'm lost as to the difference between beading and welting

These are show cars, they will never be out in the rain.
