  • Standing on Walla Crag, we heard an aircraft approaching from behind Bleaberry Fell.
We think it's an RAF Atlas A400M Airbus Transporter a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft and it's huge! Lovely to watch the graceful flight over Derwentwater and then onto Bassenthwaite Lake.

Nostalgia. Many a year I spent my childhood on that hill. Think, if I remember rightly it was called Tornado Hill. Used to watch buccaneers, jaguars, tornadoes, hawks, harriers go over derwentwater with my old man.

Hi Anthony, thanks for your comments. This particular view point is officially called Walla Crag with stunning views over Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake. It is very popular any time of the year. Cheers

Was once flying a 2 seater glider from Eden Soaring to the Lakes and 2 Tornado jets flew under us. Think they did it on purpose😊

Ah, yes, I believe you're correct. These heavy-lift strategic transport aircraft sometimes fly in pairs over this area and they're amazing to watch. Hopefully I'll have my camera with me the next time one flies so close. Thanks for stopping by.

If you like military airplane spotting, you should go to the mach loop. It is probably not that far away. There are a ton of mach loop videos on RUclips of all kinds of U.K and U.S.planes.

Unfortunately, Mach Loop is over 200 miles away from Derwent Water

Before I knew about Mach loop I was trying to climb cadair Idris from a little used route up the east side, and at the start I saw loads of people, confusing me because I thought this was a reasonably unknown way up a busy mountain, but now I know about the planes it makes sense
