Roy Harper is/was friends with Page and Plant. Both are admirers of his music and the lyrics pay homage to Harper's talent, as well as references a couple of his most famous songs at the time. Harper would sometimes perform as the opening act at LZ concerts, but they never performed this song live. About this song, Page said, "This came about from a jam Robert and I had one night. There is a whole tape of us bashing different blues things. Robert had been playing harmonica through the amp, then he used it to sing through." The music is based on a old blues song alla Bukka White. It doesn't appeal to everyone but I like the experimental sound of it.
Enjoyed all of your reactions to album 3 and so glad you enjoyed it. Looking forward to hearing all that you have lined up. Thanks, Silas, and it's good to see that your number of subscribers keeps climbing. Happy 4th! 🎉

Roy Harper is one of the founding members of the British folk music movement in the 60s and he writes incredible songs and his lyrics are amazing.
Jimmy is a good friend of his and Roy can also call Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd and Kate Bush as friends and admirers of his music.
This is a cool song and when you get to Led Zep 4 you’ll get to hear another key member of the British folk movement on one of the songs…
Great channel. Loving your reactions. I wish I was hearing all this amazing music for the first time again. I’ve been listening to Zeppelin for 30 years now and I LOVE this band

Great reaction. I haven't heard this in Forever. Even though I bought this album in junior high, I bet this was the song I listened to the least. I have almost no memory of it although I am a huge Led Zep fan. I loved it! And what you are hearing is fake stereo. It was an innovation a few years before that, largely championed by the Beatles but many groups used it for a while, and that is where it's still mono meaning one source and not two for any given instrument, but you shove a lot of things totally in the left ear and you shove other things into the right ear and it was new to people at the time because before that everything was super evenly spread throughout the whole Sound Stage in front of you because it was all monaural. I just love this project of yours and can't wait to hear Led Zeppelin 4. Or the Rune album as many people refer to it as. As a sound person, I keep thinking it will get better and I realize this is still two or three months ago so maybe it has, but the one thing that you really need to fix when you're getting so many other things just exactly right, is that the audio of the song playing is always unreasonably lower than the level of your audio microphones. Which means that if you want to turn it up to hear it the way you're supposed to hear it, your talking and your guests talking is just way too loud. So I really hope you get a handle on that,. Just make sure you find a way to bring up the level of the audio playback of the recording to where it's at least in range of your vocal microphone level.

Robert is using a tremolo unit on his voice to give it that effect. Roy Harper met the band in 1970 at the Bath Festival. Contrary to what you read on the internet he never opened for Zeppelin. He went on tour with them but as a hanger on, not as an opening act. Especially during the 1973 US Tour. The road manager Richard Cole hated him and treated him badly but the band especially Jimmy enjoyed having him around.

Nope, nothing wrong with your headphones; it was intentionally recorded like that. It's definitely a different flavor. It reminds me of something you'd hear from old Depression Era times out in the country (think The Grapes of Wrath, if you've ever read that book), like music coming out of an old-time, fuzzy, staticky radio. Or from someone playing it on a homemade guitar while sitting on a dusty front porch on a weather-beaten, wood frame, two room house on a twilight summer evening. Roy Harper is still alive and is a friend of Jimmy and Robert, however, it seems more-so a closer friend to Jimmy. Roy never seemed to make it big, supposedly because he refused to play the music industry game and Jimmy once said (paraphrasing) "hats off to anyone who isn't a sell-out". Zeppelin occasionally had him open for them and Jimmy has performed with Roy and recorded on a couple of Roy's albums. Here's a couple of trivia items for you: This song is credited on the album as being arranged by "Charles Obscure" - that was a pseudonym for Jimmy. He is also credited on one of Roy's albums with the pseudonym of "S. Flavius Mercurius". Why? I don't know. The last bit of trivia; if you've ever heard Pink Floyd's song Have A Cigar - that song was sung by Roy Harper. Roy was friends with the band and happened to be in studio when Floyd was working on that song. Roger Waters' voice was worn out for the day so they asked Roy to sing it. I'm definitely looking forward to all of your planned out "expansion" videos; they are a great idea.

@@deadchannel3274 Absolutely, it may be different from the norm, but that's what I love about Zeppelin, it isn't the same sound with different lyrics, except for a select few, each and every track differs from the rest, that's what made/makes them so great

Yeah….I too wondered if the wobbly vocals were natural…. Or some kind of studio deal.
These days, seems like the computers are playing and controlling so much of ‘music’. But, when this was made ‘musicians’ had to actually know how to play and sing.
Anyway…..I didn’t love or hate this one. Interesting listen! 👍
