Best Kept Secret~ 5 Stages Of Greif: •Denial •Anger •Bargaining •Depression •Acceptance Loving someone that may never see a future with you because you are you is exactly like experiencing these 5 stages daily. I have dealt with so much death in my life, Halsey your a lyrical goddess ✨️ thank you for comforting my eternal broken heart.
I always think it’s really interesting to read the comments under Halsey’s live performances b/c they always end up revolving around whether & what she’s using as far as effects on her vocals. Her ‘jawbrato’ clearly creates an autotune-like sound, which I think is a big source of confusion. She’s not using any effect that’s so heavy that it’s creating that rapid-wobble sound, it’s just how she sings (save the debate whether that technique is “proper” for later - it sounds great and clearly works for her). Every time you think “was that Autotune?”, rewind and watch her face/mouth closely and make the call for yourself whether the rapid movements she’s making match the sound. As someone who also has a slightly misaligned jaw, this sometimes happens to me and I’m way too poor to afford a high-quality Autotune-equivalent lol. There’s definitely a compression effect being layered on the vocals - the volume is extremely consistent for the fact that she’s alternating between a pretty closed chest/mic and a very breathy head voice in this song). Her breath control is among the absolute best, which is why she can do that, but especially in a live setting it makes sense to make sure she’s consistently audible when she sings quietly lol. She also has a naturally breathy and gritty voice, and those can sound more stable and less ‘punchy’ at lower volumes. There’s also a pretty noticeable reverb effect, but again do we criticize guitarists for using a reverb pedal to change the sound? No, because they’re still hitting the notes (with their fingers instead of their respiratory system haha). As to whether there’s any pitch correction (it’s different than Autotune - not all tissues are Kleenex but all Kleenex are tissues)… The reality is that, given how widespread its use is, it’s probably fair to assume just about any major pop vocalist today has used or is using it. It doesn’t mean they’re not able to sing, it means that for a particular performance they don’t want to miss any notes. However, there are ample examples of Halsey not using it - and recently, so it’s not like she just started using pitch correction live one day because she felt like she couldn’t keep improving her singing vs. some of her admittedly rougher early-years performances. I would argue this might be one in which she’s using little to no pitch correction - check out 0:59 to 1:04 - she’s flat, and you can see her hear it and pull one of the playback headphones out to change how she’s hearing/monitoring her voice in real-time. This is an extremely controlled environment (she’s not running around dancing like at a concert - watch anything from the Love and Power tour and you can hear her miss a note way worse every once in a while, which Autotune or pitch correction would have caught), and she can focus on the full-body control you need to sing consistently without relying on help staying on pitch. It’s not really conclusive either way - you’d need to run the isolated vocals through a pitch tracking program (like Phil on the @wingsofpegasus channel does) to be able to make a more definite call. At the end of the day, I think we can all be confident that Halsey does, in fact, sound like her recordings and can indeed sing on pitch 😅. Her choice as an artist whether or not to use effects or even a form of pitch correction is her right in determining how she wants to present and execute each performance she does.
Her voice has improved ten fold. Her higher register belts are amaze balls. The texture is nice. Her jaw is incredibly tense still though and the jaw tension wobbly thing she does with her riffs seems like its def going to cause some issues soon. It hurts my jaw just looking at it...i have some pretty bad jaw issues maybe TMJ I'm not sure but the pain def helped me to notice to lose the tension when im singing because it literally hurts when i carry the tension for more than 10 mins or so. Also side note: She looks lovely here, i love her outfit and hair and her eyes are so pretty i just wish she would keep them open at least 25 percent more than what she is in this. I know its hard to go from always closed eyes to mostly open and engaged with the audience throughout the performance, especially with a song thats coming from a more vunerable place it can maybe feel uncomfortable to let people in by seeing the very windows to our souls (cheezy sounding but its very true if u think about it). I think slowly practicing that more and more is beneficial to the longevity of your career and the over all reception of your artistry and messages and stories you wanted to tell because thats why you become a professional singer/songwriter in the first place right? If i went to see a live perf and the artist had their eyes closed as much as here i would feel sort of uncomfortable for them because its showing us that you're nervous to express your emotions throughout each story YOU wanted to tell to YOUR own fans because THEY PAY to see/hear/FEEL the art/music/Lyrics/imagry that YOU chose to put out...you are a product essentially...people pay for a product and they want and hope to get the full experience they paid for esp when theyre so fond of you and want to see you go places and be successful, and they have a connection to your songs or an entire album is relatable to them, so when they also buy an expensive concert ticket they should get to feel that whole thing that they didn't quite have all the colors of on the records listened before they got to save up for the most intimate experience with their beloved artist/ musician. Haha god i need to shut up.
