Honestly so much can be done with good comping. This style of VFX has always reminded me of the type of kitbashing done creating physical effects on old movies like Star wars.
When I see amazing tutorials like this, I feel so inadequate and stupid for not realizing the simplicity of these complicated effects lol It looks so good guys. Very impressed with it.

Bro, This is NEXT LEVEL Awesome. You can feel the community of film makers you created, you enabled us to do so much with so little mental effort and you made it easy to understand. I love what you've done and you guys are still at it. THANK YOU!
Hey @Film Riot, I've been sub'd to your channel and watching for years. To me, this is the most excellent of many excellent DIY/improvise episodes you have ever produced - well done! I'm simple peasant trying to drag my own oxcart through the village of AE/E3D/Trapcode and your final shot made from sweat, creativity and ingenuity just blew me away.
Damn, it feels good to be reminded of how successful your shot can look just by brute forcing your way through a comp, kit-bashing style! Since learning 3D, unreal, etc I think I've gotten a bit lost in the weeds...this was an important reminder for me of how fun and effective this type of compositing is. Thanks so much!!! 🖤🖤
Incredible how my brain always over complicates things. The entire scene (except the ship) is just pictures! I thought for sure that building was just a 3d model. LOVE IT!
Thank you Ryan! The cussing and the technique is impeccable and I love seeing all of the progress and how easy you make it look. You and your brother makes this accessible for us slightly irregular folks to explore what's possible within SFX. Thank You
As someone who studies VFX and wants to focus on compositing, i know that most film and tv shows especially at higher levels like kenobi are made in nuke, but this just shows that even without the same workflow and software one can still achieve a quite similar result if he knows what he is doing. I am currently working on my showreel and every shot i comp in nuke since thats what i learned for, but i see a lot of more commercial oriented companies who search for 3d artists and compositors that are good with after effects and so i am now also trying to learn after effects to be prepaired for applying everywhere. This video helped me motivating to put more time into after effects since it can be used to do the same things as in nuke, just in a different way!
I always love to watch your demos. It’s not the techniques - which are so cool but rarely applicable to our type of projects. We just don’t want to miss how much love you put into your co-worker interactions and micro-stories. Truly engaging, entertaining and funny stuff. Along the way we end up learning a few things too! Fckn love you fckn guys.

Nice, pretty quick turnaround too. Not bad at all for a movie-level VFX shot. I love the ingenuity in getting different materials and comps like the base shot/texture.
Dude Ryan that is so cool! The recreation looks so good! Great tips for all kinds of Sci fi and fantasy films. I love that it can be done in AE, aside from the element 3D part. A lot of tutorials require a lot of stock assets or extra plug ins.

You guys should add 'using stock footage' to your title. I assumed it was a CG remake and would have clicked on it sooner knowing it was a stock footage tutorial, this is fantastic.
I enjoy your videos since years but I dont think I have ever written any comment. But this tutorial... wow! The simple steps you took resulted in such an incredible clip. Especially how good the tower and the water looks blows me away. Very, very well done! :-)
Wow, congratulations guays. I have been following you for many years. And I love your videos, I laugh a lot with you, and above all, I learn. But here... This is amazing! It is absolutely impressive how you have been able to recreate such an impressive scene in such an easy way, starting from basic concepts and above all using ingenuity and imagination (I loved using real images of columns) with a Hollywood level. This type of tutorial blows my mind, because the result is completely impressive and you do it in a very simple way and with programs like After Effects. Please more tutorials like this!
