In 2020 my school offered Both AI and AA SL and HL for DP2 and only AI for DP1😂 But this year in our grade (Upcoming DP1) we've got both AA and AI for HL&SL again🙈 So it really depends on whether there's enough students wanting that course 😆 I'm AI SL BTW🙈

Hey Mr.Flynn. I hope that its not to late to ask but I am about to enter Grade 11 and start my IBDP program and I was thinking about Biomedicine as the major that I would take later at Uni. Currently I applied for Bio HL, Chem HL, and Bus HL. And the problem is that I am still confused regarding the math subject that I should take (AA SL or AI SL). Do you perhaps have any recomendation as to which one I should take considering the major that Im aiming for and the fact that I am pretty moderate at math?
I would like to ask your opinion on whether or not I should take SL AA or SL AI for a science based career? I am currently planning on taking Biology, Chemistry. I am seeing that many students that study Biology and Chemistry tend to chose SL AA. Since I intend to do agronomy, field work is definently important and I am certain knowing how to work around equations is especially important. In my previous math class, I thought the algebra, geometry, and trigonometry units were interesting and not too difficult, aswell as probability. Hi Thanks for the useful video! I am in a bit of a dilemma. I am looking to study biochemistry in the UK and most courses say they don’t have a preference for either course at HL or SL. I would like to take maths HL as I really like maths but wouldn’t mind taking SL maths (AA). I really really like maths right now at IGCSE but I’m not sure if that means I can consider myself “really good at maths” since IGCSE maths Extended is much easier than IB maths HL. Also at IGCSE maths, you can use a calculator for both papers and I’m a bit concerned about not being able to use a calculator for a paper (while I am willing to practice mental maths and improve). For an undergraduate Biochemistry course, should I take IB maths AA HL, AA SL or AI HL? Thank you!!
Obviously consult your counsellor and make sure universities are ok with it for your course, but I would probably say AA SL is the best option for you. Not taking HL will give you more time to focus on other subjects. Don't worry about the non calculator paper. They don't make you do complicated mental maths. It is more about making students solve equations using algebra rather than just with a calculator.

I'm looking into studying dentistry and wanted to pick Math AI HL (as well as Chem & Bio HL) but I've been told taking AA HL might be more appealing to universities for scholarships. Should I switch to AA? I'm consistently getting around level 6 right now in Maths but I'm concerned about the workload if I pick AA next year. In my opinion AI HL and AA HL are pretty much the same in terms of difficulty. So I wouldn't say do AI because the workload is less. You won't find many universities that need AA over AI HL for dentistry but there may be some. There are no universities (as far as I know) that require AI HL over AA HL for anything. It probably doesn't matter for you which one you take so maybe choose the one which has the topics you find more interesting. AI has more stats. AA has more calculus. If still in doubt, do AA. Can't go wrong with universities.

Don't move to AISL for sure. Either stay in AIHL or move to AASL. Speak with your DP coordinator. You should be able to move to AASL if you explain the situation.

I'd probably recommend AI. It's the easier of the two for sure and you can focus more on your other subjects. The diploma is hard so take any advantage you can.

This is a question many students ask. Obviously it is not a simple one to answer when I don't know you but I'll do my best. The first question I would have would be how bad are you failing? If you are achieving a grade of 1 or 2 then you probably should move to SL. Next, how much trouble do you have with math? To do HL, you should really be doing very well in middle school (whatever the curriculum). You should be regularly getting the top grades. If not, you probably shouldn't have chosen it. Having said that, if you are good at math, and you really enjoy it, and you are really motivated to do well, and you are willing to put in a lot of time, and it is important for your future then you should stick with it. If you don't need it for university, you should consider SL. Hope that helps.

It depends on the university. Some require it. Some don't. However, if you are not very good at maths, I would recommend finding a university that accepts SL.

Hi Rida. This is definitely not a simple yes or no question. It depends on a lot of things. How well are you doing in AA SL? If you are getting 5+, I would probably say to stay. If you were getting 3 or below, you might be better off going back to AI. Also, I would start to think about what you want to study and where. For example if you want to study business in Canada, you should probably stay in AA. If you want to study film, AI is probably fine.
Hello Mr. Flynn, I'm currently a sophomore that's doing dual enrollment AND IB certification I want to peruse becoming a pediatric doctor or phycologist. Which of these math's would be better beneficial to me? I've never been the strongest at math but that's mostly because I'm just not as interested in the subject but when Im focused and determined I can understand it. I might consider going to VCU or another college that offers a good medical program. I just need help deciding what math would be best beneficial to me.
HL is very difficult so I would advise against it. AI is the easier of the two SL's but I would contact the university to find out if they have one that they require.

Definitely check with the university and don't trust me but I am guessing AI SL would be acceptable and therefore you should do that as you are not strong in math. But contact the university to make sure.
Hello Mr. Flynn, I need your help. I plan to take Food Science in university. Here is my subject selection: Bio HL Chem HL Economics HL (my first language) A SL English B SL And finally Math AA SL I need your help in confirming my math subject. I've researched a lot about the requirements(and it seemed to me all universities offering food science accept AA SL), but I can't get a peace of mind. Is Math AA SL a good choice for Food Science? I plan to go to either NUS/Massey University, but if you perhaps know, do other universities require higher maths or is AA SL good enough? I am not that good in math, grade 10 I got an average of 4 and sometimes 5 in extended maths for criterion A and B, although for criterion C it I usually 5 or 6. It sounds like AA SL is the right choice. Very unlikely that a university would insist on HL for food science. I think with Bio and Chem HL, you should be in good shape.

Short answer is AA. Where do you want to study? For example if you want to study medicine in Sydney university, you will need AA. There are, however, universities around the world that accept AI for medicine. In terms of which will prepare you better for the course, I would argue AA.

I would say definitely move to AI SL. You will be much better off there. You need to check with your school but it shouldn't be a problem. Also maybe confirm with your universities that they will accept AI for your course.
What do you mean doesn't offer both, you mean like schools don't generally allow people to take Math AA and Math AI, or that they offer only one of Them ??

Are you going into your final year? Don't do AI HL. It is much harder than AA SL. You have two options: 1) Move to AA SL (it is difficult and you will have to dedicate a lot of time to this), 2) Find a university that does accept AI SL.

I would say you should stay in AA. If you want to study medicine, you should be able for AA SL and it will better prepare you for uni. Some universities even say they would like Higher Level math for medicine.

Most universities will accept both. Some say AA is preferred. I would recommend AA if you have the choice but AI is fine. I have yet to see a university that says they prefer AI for anything but would be happy for someone to show me otherwise.

UK universities often don't mind which IB math you have for courses that don't require A-level math if you are coming from the British curriculum. This is the case for medicine in many UK universities. However often they do prefer A-level math and hence would prefer higher level math in the IB or at least AA SL. I would argue that if you want to study medicine, you should be taking at least AA SL (ie. not AI SL). Certainly when you look outside the UK, it is often required. Which universities did you find in the UK that require AA SL?
@@MrFlynnIB From what I've seen, Imperial College London and I believe Bristol as well. I want to have extra options, in the event that a uni that I want to attend requires AA SL. But its surprisingly difficult to find exactly what they require regarding math levels, since most if not all of them don't say whether they prefer or require AA or AI on their website. Do you know another way of finding out what math they prefer or require since they don't list it?

SL AI. It is easier and most universities will accept it for psychology. If there is a specific university he wants to go to, however, you should contact them and ask if it is ok.

Some universities require HL for economics but there are definitely some that will accept SL. If maths is not your strongest subject, then don't do HL and find a uni that accepts SL.

Hi Penelope. No a 7 in GCSE is definitely not 'bad'. I thought I avoided using the word 'bad'. To do HL, however, you need to be better than not bad. Check with your teacher but ideally you should be getting an 8 or 9 at GCSE to do HL. AA SL is also a high level and good preparation for lots of university courses.
My school only offers AA, and as someone who doesn't like math, I'm scared. Hopefully I can handle AA SL :( Math is my weakest subject, and I plan on studying International Law or something along those lines in university. Does anyone have advice, is AA SL really that hard? I know you can't use a calculator on the first paper so hopefully, you don't need strong mental maths skills in that section.
Unless moving school is an option, you don't seem to have much of a choice. It is very hard to get a 7 in AA SL but I would say not really that hard to get a 4 provided you put in the effort.

So you have a lot of things to consider. If the question is simply which will prepare me best for uni? Then either HL. Maybe AI HL. If the question is which would universities prefer? Then the either HL. But it's not always that simple. For example not everyone can cope with HL bio, HL Chem and HL math. HL math is hard and requires a lot of your time. If you are really good at math then go for it. If it is not one of your best subjects, maybe you should go for AA SL. I would advise against AI SL as lots of universities don't accept it for medicine. Example Sydney in my video. Let me know what you think.

Hi Marco. Is year 10 the first year of DP for you? Honestly, it is difficult for me to say without knowing you. How did you get a 2? If you are really good at math which you must be if you are getting 7s and 6s and more importantly you really want to do HL math and are willing to put in a massive effort, I'd say go for it.
@@MrFlynnIB Yea that 2 i got was for a criterion B test I got back in November. i improved in criterion B as In January i got a 7. Right now I am in year 9 and i am trying to get in HL maths for year 10. i calculate my average and its a 6. I am willing to put a massive effort just like i did in the past years. @@Marco-wb4dd Normally the DP starts in year 12 or grade 11. Why are you starting in year 10. Each school has their own way of doing it. Usually it is a combination of your choice, teacher recommendation and school qualifying criteria.
Interesting one. Probably depends where you want to do it. I had a student who wanted to become a pilot in Spain and they insisted on at least AA SL (any but AI SL). I'm sure, however, that there are many routes to become a pilot where AI SL is not an issue. Definitely do some research and contact the universities/pilot schools and see what they say. Post anything you discover here to help others.

If it is HL, then either would be fine. I am assuming you meant Econ ya? AI has more statistics but I know there is a lot of calculus used in economics too. If we are talking about SL, then I would recommend AA.

LSE requires AA HL and most top universities require AA HL and even if your main goal is not a top university, even then it kind of means that AA HL is better for economics and as far as I know economics involves very serious math. Some students at my school took AI HL but now when they want to apply to universities they are facing issues because some just don't accept AI HL

In general universities prefer AA over AI for pretty much everything. I am yet to see any course in any uni that says they prefer AI. Please let me know if you find one.

That's a really difficult one. Sounds like you really fit in the AA SL category. You have 4 (none of which are good) options. 1. stick with AI HL, study really hard and hopefully get a 4. A great IA will help here. 2. Move to AI SL and find a uni that accepts this for your course. 3. Convince your school to teach you AA SL, possibly while remaining in the AI HL class. 4. Move to a school that offers AA SL. I would probably recommend either option 1 or option 2 depending on how well you are doing. If you are consistently getting grades 1 and 2, then move to SL. If you are getting 3s and 4s then stick it out in HL. Let me know if that helps. Sorry there isn't an easy fix.
@@MrFlynnIB Yeah that's my situation but I think a lot of my peers that are forced into the AI SL class which is not classified as a desirable mathematics course for all non art uni programs in Australia. Due to the fact that they find HL daunting, I think if it was raised for the possibility of an AA sl class many would join its just getting the class to begin with that's the real issue. On my first test I got a 1 because I didn't do any revisions or even work in class because I thought it was going to be easy to skate through like I did in MYP. This most recent test I got a high 3 but I feel I would rather do HL english than HL maths purely because I don't really enjoy the subject and I want to go into a Law degree.
@@williamgriffin7852 Not an ideal situation. I would probably suggest staying in HL unless you can get your school to start an AA SL class. Explain the situation to your DP coordinator. Hopefully they can help.

Are you saying your university want HL maths? Or they want AA (SL or HL). I think probably the best course for you is AASL.

Hey, im in a bit of a dilemma, maybe you could give me some advice...Ive just finished year 11 ai HL and got a band 5 (I do know that ai hl will become a lot harder in year 12...), however I do need at least aa sl (which i cant pick anymore) to do some science degree at uni probably. My teacher said that ai HL math will be hard for me. What do I do? Ai SL will limit a lot of opportunities and courses that i couldve done at uni.
Don't move to AISL for sure. Either stay in AIHL or move to AASL. Speak with your DP coordinator. You should be able to move to AASL if you explain the situation.
I'm getting 6s in standard maths in grade 10, should I go for AISL or AASL? I want to do Humanities in uni (Possibly international relations) and there isn't really a lot of requirements
I'd probably recommend AI. It's the easier of the two for sure and you can focus more on your other subjects. The diploma is hard so take any advantage you can.
I’m currently falling AAHL. I really love math but I have so much trouble with the math. I’m only in Year 1 and maybe 2-3 months in. Should I switch out?
This is a question many students ask. Obviously it is not a simple one to answer when I don't know you but I'll do my best. The first question I would have would be how bad are you failing? If you are achieving a grade of 1 or 2 then you probably should move to SL. Next, how much trouble do you have with math? To do HL, you should really be doing very well in middle school (whatever the curriculum). You should be regularly getting the top grades. If not, you probably shouldn't have chosen it. Having said that, if you are good at math, and you really enjoy it, and you are really motivated to do well, and you are willing to put in a lot of time, and it is important for your future then you should stick with it. If you don't need it for university, you should consider SL. Hope that helps.

It depends on the university. Some require it. Some don't. However, if you are not very good at maths, I would recommend finding a university that accepts SL.

So i started doing math AI sl cause our school doesn’t had AA sl at that time and i knew that if i will do math only at sl. But then they started math AA sl course in feb and i got to know late and i joined thr course in march but now i am not really sure about it and was thinking of going back to AI as i m not sure about my future course in university. Hi Rida. This is definitely not a simple yes or no question. It depends on a lot of things. How well are you doing in AA SL? If you are getting 5+, I would probably say to stay. If you were getting 3 or below, you might be better off going back to AI. Also, I would start to think about what you want to study and where. For example if you want to study business in Canada, you should probably stay in AA. If you want to study film, AI is probably fine.

I'm currently a sophomore that's doing dual enrollment AND IB certification I want to peruse becoming a pediatric doctor or phycologist. Which of these math's would be better beneficial to me? I've never been the strongest at math but that's mostly because I'm just not as interested in the subject but when Im focused and determined I can understand it. I might consider going to VCU or another college that offers a good medical program. I just need help deciding what math would be best beneficial to me.
HL is very difficult so I would advise against it. AI is the easier of the two SL's but I would contact the university to find out if they have one that they require.

Definitely check with the university and don't trust me but I am guessing AI SL would be acceptable and therefore you should do that as you are not strong in math. But contact the university to make sure.

Hello Mr. Flynn, I need your help. I plan to take Food Science in university. Here is my subject selection:
Bio HL
Chem HL
Economics HL
(my first language) A SL
English B SL
And finally Math AA SL
I need your help in confirming my math subject. I've researched a lot about the requirements(and it seemed to me all universities offering food science accept AA SL), but I can't get a peace of mind.
Is Math AA SL a good choice for Food Science? I plan to go to either NUS/Massey University, but if you perhaps know, do other universities require higher maths or is AA SL good enough?
I am not that good in math, grade 10 I got an average of 4 and sometimes 5 in extended maths for criterion A and B, although for criterion C it I usually 5 or 6.
Other than that I think my choice of Bio and Chem HL is good enough for food science right?

It sounds like AA SL is the right choice. Very unlikely that a university would insist on HL for food science. I think with Bio and Chem HL, you should be in good shape.

Short answer is AA. Where do you want to study? For example if you want to study medicine in Sydney university, you will need AA. There are, however, universities around the world that accept AI for medicine. In terms of which will prepare you better for the course, I would argue AA.
My school, Mahatma Gandhi International School, Ahmedabad, India offers all 4 (Math AA SL, Math AI SL, Math AA HL, Math AI HL)

I´m currently taking AA SL and it´s super hard bc math is one of my weakest subjetcs, i want to study filmmaking, marketing or something like that in NYU (not related to math) should I switch to AI SL? .im 15 btw i just entered IB 2 months ago so it is possible for me to change, advise plz!!! and i do get great grades (last year) and my AA teacher always gives us low grades, and the AI teacher gives higher grades !
I would say definitely move to AI SL. You will be much better off there. You need to check with your school but it shouldn't be a problem. Also maybe confirm with your universities that they will accept AI for your course.
What do you mean doesn't offer both, you mean like schools don't generally allow people to take Math AA and Math AI, or that they offer only one of Them ??
A lot of schools only offer AA HL or AI HL. Since I made this video, I have found plenty schools do offer both. Including my own.

Are you going into your final year? Don't do AI HL. It is much harder than AA SL. You have two options: 1) Move to AA SL (it is difficult and you will have to dedicate a lot of time to this), 2) Find a university that does accept AI SL.

I would say you should stay in AA. If you want to study medicine, you should be able for AA SL and it will better prepare you for uni. Some universities even say they would like Higher Level math for medicine.

Most universities will accept both. Some say AA is preferred. I would recommend AA if you have the choice but AI is fine. I have yet to see a university that says they prefer AI for anything but would be happy for someone to show me otherwise.

You can ask the university but almost certainly you will have to change. The other option is to find a university and course that does accept AI SL.

Im in grade 11 and just starting the IB to study medicine (in the UK probably). Ive chosen AI SL but I'm not really sure if I should keep it. What is the best possible choice for me, because I've seen that a lot of universities accept AI SL but many don't and require at least AA SL for medicine?
UK universities often don't mind which IB math you have for courses that don't require A-level math if you are coming from the British curriculum. This is the case for medicine in many UK universities. However often they do prefer A-level math and hence would prefer higher level math in the IB or at least AA SL. I would argue that if you want to study medicine, you should be taking at least AA SL (ie. not AI SL). Certainly when you look outside the UK, it is often required. Which universities did you find in the UK that require AA SL?
@@MrFlynnIB From what I've seen, Imperial College London and I believe Bristol as well. I want to have extra options, in the event that a uni that I want to attend requires AA SL. But its surprisingly difficult to find exactly what they require regarding math levels, since most if not all of them don't say whether they prefer or require AA or AI on their website. Do you know another way of finding out what math they prefer or require since they don't list it?

SL AI. It is easier and most universities will accept it for psychology. If there is a specific university he wants to go to, however, you should contact them and ask if it is ok.

Some universities require HL for economics but there are definitely some that will accept SL. If maths is not your strongest subject, then don't do HL and find a uni that accepts SL.

I would say AIHL is very slightly easier. Universities would prefer in this order AAHL, AIHL, AASL, AISL.

Hi Penelope. No a 7 in GCSE is definitely not 'bad'. I thought I avoided using the word 'bad'. To do HL, however, you need to be better than not bad. Check with your teacher but ideally you should be getting an 8 or 9 at GCSE to do HL. AA SL is also a high level and good preparation for lots of university courses.

My school only offers AA, and as someone who doesn't like math, I'm scared. Hopefully I can handle AA SL :(
Math is my weakest subject, and I plan on studying International Law or something along those lines in university. Does anyone have advice, is AA SL really that hard? I know you can't use a calculator on the first paper so hopefully, you don't need strong mental maths skills in that section.
Unless moving school is an option, you don't seem to have much of a choice. It is very hard to get a 7 in AA SL but I would say not really that hard to get a 4 provided you put in the effort.

So you have a lot of things to consider. If the question is simply which will prepare me best for uni? Then either HL. Maybe AI HL. If the question is which would universities prefer? Then the either HL. But it's not always that simple. For example not everyone can cope with HL bio, HL Chem and HL math. HL math is hard and requires a lot of your time. If you are really good at math then go for it. If it is not one of your best subjects, maybe you should go for AA SL. I would advise against AI SL as lots of universities don't accept it for medicine. Example Sydney in my video. Let me know what you think.

Hi, this year I have gotten all 7 ns and 6 xes. I have though gotten one 2 in one of my exams. Do you think I will make it in HL maths for year 10? Hi Marco. Is year 10 the first year of DP for you? Honestly, it is difficult for me to say without knowing you. How did you get a 2? If you are really good at math which you must be if you are getting 7s and 6s and more importantly you really want to do HL math and are willing to put in a massive effort, I'd say go for it.

Right now I am in year 9 and i am trying to get in HL maths for year 10. i calculate my average and its a 6. I am willing to put a massive effort just like i did in the past years. @@Marco-wb4dd Normally the DP starts in year 12 or grade 11. Why are you starting in year 10. Each school has their own way of doing it. Usually it is a combination of your choice, teacher recommendation and school qualifying criteria.

Both are accepted at pretty much every university I would imagine. I would say they are equally appropriate.

Interesting one. Probably depends where you want to do it. I had a student who wanted to become a pilot in Spain and they insisted on at least AA SL (any but AI SL). I'm sure, however, that there are many routes to become a pilot where AI SL is not an issue. Definitely do some research and contact the universities/pilot schools and see what they say. Post anything you discover here to help others.

If it is HL, then either would be fine. I am assuming you meant Econ ya? AI has more statistics but I know there is a lot of calculus used in economics too. If we are talking about SL, then I would recommend AA.

LSE requires AA HL and most top universities require AA HL and even if your main goal is not a top university, even then it kind of means that AA HL is better for economics and as far as I know economics involves very serious math. Some students at my school took AI HL but now when they want to apply to universities they are facing issues because some just don't accept AI HL

In general universities prefer AA over AI for pretty much everything. I am yet to see any course in any uni that says they prefer AI. Please let me know if you find one.

That's a really difficult one. Sounds like you really fit in the AA SL category. You have 4 (none of which are good) options. 1. stick with AI HL, study really hard and hopefully get a 4. A great IA will help here. 2. Move to AI SL and find a uni that accepts this for your course. 3. Convince your school to teach you AA SL, possibly while remaining in the AI HL class. 4. Move to a school that offers AA SL. I would probably recommend either option 1 or option 2 depending on how well you are doing. If you are consistently getting grades 1 and 2, then move to SL. If you are getting 3s and 4s then stick it out in HL. Let me know if that helps. Sorry there isn't an easy fix.
@@MrFlynnIB Yeah that's my situation but I think a lot of my peers that are forced into the AI SL class which is not classified as a desirable mathematics course for all non art uni programs in Australia. Due to the fact that they find HL daunting, I think if it was raised for the possibility of an AA sl class many would join its just getting the class to begin with that's the real issue. On my first test I got a 1 because I didn't do any revisions or even work in class because I thought it was going to be easy to skate through like I did in MYP. This most recent test I got a high 3 but I feel I would rather do HL english than HL maths purely because I don't really enjoy the subject and I want to go into a Law degree.
@@williamgriffin7852 Not an ideal situation. I would probably suggest staying in HL unless you can get your school to start an AA SL class. Explain the situation to your DP coordinator. Hopefully they can help.
