Thanks for sharing. I use 4” pots and I water the cutting thoroughly then use a rubber band to secure a 1 gallon zip lock bag around the base of the pot creating a mini greenhouse which captures the humidity and I don’t water them for 3 weeks which is usually how long it takes them to root. I have a 90+% success rate. Just sharing an alternate method.

I just popped my cuttings into a glass of water. They grew nice roots and I potted them up. Now, they’re taking over my bedroom window. Gonna have to cut them back soon.

I'm so happy to find your video. I love Tibouchina, but it's hard to find in my area. (I'm in the US, Atlanta, GA.) I found one yesterday at a nursery so I bought it, but it won't live through the winter here. I'll put it in my shed when winter comes, but now I know how to propagate which increases my chances of having it next year.

Using Perlite with potting compost also holds oxygen in the soil - more important than one thinks. Thank you for this video - I have a very large Tibouchina which has to be kept in a pot so that I can move it into the conservatory in winter (I'm in the UK). I have never seen the white Tibouchina before! Gorgeous! I must look for one here. Thanks.

Great video, thanks, Stewart. Not sure if you still monitor from time to time. I'm just taking cuttings now in NZ. My question is about watering. You suggest every day and a frequent light spray to maintain humidity. Others are saying no watering at all until the cuttings are thriving. Confusing. Grateful for any advice.
Hi Martin, I’m still here. As long as your propagation media is free draining then I water daily an mist as much as possible. You will lose more cuttings from being too dry than being too wet.
You have separated your cutting from its root system it’s only supply of moisture now is what it can get through its stem a leaves.

Lovely poppies. I use the vermiculite to add to my soil/compost mix for cuttings. Or, I mix it with coir for my seed starting mix. I have never planted Tibouchina before. I am going to add to my shopping list, the same with the azalea.
Aye Matie, just bought the large leaf tibia China today and she is a real looker. First thing I wanted to do was propagate to assure I don’t lose her to my bunnies. Maybe the greenhouse would be the best place. Thank you

Hey William, you can use just about anything. I prefer sieved, quality potting mix with about one part course washed river sand to two parts sieved potting mix. You could use coir peat and sand about 2 to 1 as well. It needs to drain well but hold onto the moisture at the same time.

Hi Selena, any time in spring will do. As long as they are fresh young tips they should strike well.

Great video, thanx! I finally came across a Tibouchina after 2 years searching(!) I live in Norway, wich might explain my struggle. I am wondering about what time of the year you are referring to..? I believe (judging by your accent) that you recide in Australia? It is height of summer here now. Can I take cuttings then, or is that not the right time?
Wow, Norway! Hardly a subtropical climate but certainly worth a go. As long as you have some new fresh tip growth to take cuttings from.
I'd be curious to see how you get on.
If they don't work then maybe late spring-early summer next year might be a slightly better time.

I followed your suggestions to great success. 4 of my 6 soft tip cuttings are beginning to thrive. I'm unsure, though, when to uncover them with the plastic container. I live in California and it's currently starting to get chilly at night. Will this make a difference? Thanks for you information. Appreciated.
Glad to hear it Jonathan.
If you’re seeing good signs of growth they can come out from their container anytime.
Gradually harden them off by giving them a little extra sunlight each day until they are in full sun all day.
Seeing as you’re heading into winter this should be without any problems though if you get a frost you might need to protect them overnight.

Yes, they did. They strike roots very easy.

You can always try but I think you’ll get a better strike rate in late September to October.
I wondered why you fill your pots so they are overspilling with soil when you go to water them half your water will run off

No, I didn’t. They struck roots very easily.
I think as long as you maintain humidity around them by using a makeshift green house or cover them with a plastic bag or a drink bottle they will be fine.

It's just water to help keep the leaves moist and stop them from drying out.
Why do you cut one leaf in half?
It's meant to reduce transpiration to help prevent the cutting from drying out before it strikes a new root system.
Can you go through this process in Autumn?
I doubt it as they are in full flower at the moment. No harm in trying though.
Am in a Tropical island. In which period do I process the Ti bouchinia.
Spring. Use the new growth in spring to source your cuttings from.

How much centigrade under 0 C° tibouchina can survive?
Not much at all. They can handle a light frost once established but they will need protection from a frost when they are small. A heavy frost can kill them.
Hey there! Thanks so much for this helpful info. Does anyone know what the purpose of cutting off the flower is?
I've recently propagated roses and figured I would let the petals fall naturally. I can't imagine a flower would affect potential growth much by leaving it on. Is my assumption correct?
When preparing cuttings we generally remove any flowers and flower buds because the cutting needs every bit of energy it can get to produce a new set of roots.
And having to share what is now in very limited supply with flowering and then seed setting is likely to be too much for most cuttings to contend with.

Hi Shelly and yes, most of them are like that. We bought them as seconds and as soon as they fall over or get knocked over their heads fall off.
Nothing ghoulish, just bad luck on our part.
