Thanks, Jenn. I have a Tibouchina Granulosa and live in east central Florida. It hasn't been growing much since I planted it two years ago but was getting very bushy. I just trimmed mine (April 27, 2018) like you have done and hope it will grow more into a tree than a bush.

Thank you so much for this helpful video. :0) I have a princess flower that is in great need of a pruning. Now I feel safe in chopping her back to a more manageable size and shape.

I have just pruned mine ... southern hemisphere time, but instinctively only took it down by a third... when it starts to bud up on the pruned side I will complete the job on the other side... I've never worried about the leaves turning red or them dropping... pruning restores the bushiness

I love this plant. But yours actually is Tibouchina heteromalla/Pleroma heteromallum/Tibouchina grandifolia. Tibouchina urvilleana does not have those big leaves.

Can someone please tell me, what is the low shrubby plant to the left of the Tibouchina, with the green and pink leaves?

I have one that I made into a bush because I did not know what I was doing. Now I have a very tall bush and would like to know if it is possible to make it into a tree or is it to late? The last time I trimmed it a while ago and it has not been very happy and some sort of ant is eating the wood and they are not large like carpenter ants, but where I trimmed the wood died. Is there anything I can do? It looks leggy and not full anymore. Could the insects be killing the roots?

My plant has become quite leggy but except for a few branches, it has NO leaves, never mind flowers. What can I do?

Do what I did. Recycle it. It doesn't like being moved. It doesn't like wind. It doesn't like its own flowers because it rejects them after 24 hours. I've fertilized it by the book, I've added aluminum sulphate (acid) by the book, and I've watered it by the book. But I'll be darned if I'll serenade the undisciplined, ungraceful thing. Ugly plant. I''ll stick with my mandavilles.

Hi Angelisa. I would say early springtime (i.e., now), after you're confident that you've had your last frost of the season. Not sure about how easy it is to propagate using cuttings, but you may as well give it a try! Maybe soak the cuttings in water for a few days to see if they sprout roots, and if they do, plant them once the roots are long.

I bought a azalea and tibouchina (pilorama) plant at last month but my these plants are not growing well,so what can I do for better growth???
My soil is drain soil but I can't sure is it acidic or alkaline soil,I learnt that these plants needs acidic soil!!
    I can't understand what's the problem,pls guide me!!!!

I have heard that coffee grounds (used) will help make your soil more acidic. Also, I heard that bone meal is a good supplement for Tibouchina. Hopefully, someone else will comment on this. Also, an azalia/camelia type fertilizer might help with the soil.

The tibouchina in the video is not Tibouchina urvilleana. Yours probably is.
