- Little did Anthony Ray know, better known by his stage name Sir Mix-a-Lot, that his song about his love for bodacious backsides would not only become a double platinum hit but, change his life forever. The Auburn, Washington born rapper, songwriter, and record producer grew up in Seattle's Central District. Life in the city during the ‘70s wasn’t easy. Wide spread unemployment and a tanking economy led to sky high food prices and rising rates of people deciding to take their own lives. The streets, owned by gangs and pimps, could have had an unfortunate influence young Sir Mix-a-Lot but, his mother made sure that wasn’t going to happen on her watch. As a child he was a fan of Prince, Michael Jackson and, his personal favourite, James Brown but listened to a wide variety of musical genres, including rock and heavy metal. He also began to develop a love of the growing new genre of hip hop.

I was in high school when Sir Mixalot came out, at our prom we had a beautiful Vice Principal and she jumped on the dance floor and started shaking when this song came on. Our school vice principal reminds me of La La Valdez, but the sad part is that Mixalot didn’t create the song for black women like we thought he did. He was talking about women like JLo and other Latino women. During spring break the year Sir Mixalot came out with “Baby Got Back” myself and some of my teammates drove down to Panama City Beach for MTV Spring Break and he performed with ALL WHITE WOMEN dancers 👯♀️. We were standing close to the stage looking at each other like “WTF” 🤣. But we drove down to Daytona, Florida and watched Uncle Luke with “Two Live Crew” and then we had the time of our lives lol 😂. Good job 👍🏾 once again and I appreciate you bringing me back down memory lane
Umm.. he mentioned Flo Jo(Florence GriffinJoyner) in the song Who is the only BLACK WOMAN given an actual shot out in the lyrics.. he also had a visual reference for Josephine Baker(ole school singer from the 1920's) Not to mention the Beautiful Deeply Melaninated Queen at the beginning of the video as well as the other Brown and Dark skinned sistas throughout....So when I see the video I know it promotes Black Women as Beautiful. They (wytppl) were 8utthurt and called it rayciss.. so he caught a lot of flack for that... so I think he tried to save face by putting hwiite women in the live shows as well as using that lameass answer in his interview to make it seem inclusive.. Note he challenged the WHITE Beauty Standard at that time period... which was definitely a no no in the industry... he was forced to play ball that's all that was..ijs🤷🏾

That’s insane. Mariah Carey is only estimated to have made ~65m from her track “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, which has been far more imbedded in our culture than BGB imo (not a dig to Sir Mix at all). Maybe he’s embellishing a bit. Maybe it’s the fact that the song is a bit younger, idk. Still a great accomplishment for him nevertheless.

Baby Got Back was my song it spoke about real life issues of what guys like me love girls with big butts, at the time you’ve people all upset about it thinking that they’re sexist and racist and things like that and all of sudden a white girl and her family has a there own tv show and seeing that her and her sisters have big butts and just like that having people going under the knife just to look like them.
