As Jon Anderson said, sometimes it was the sound of the words, rather than their meaning. Although this song is supposed to be about mountain climbing, I always found another meaning for me -- the southern sky constellations -- those that I rarely see or have never seen -- their mysteries and history through the ages. My own star sign is the southern most constellation of the zodiac -- Sagittarius. These fascinations, blended in my mind with the music of Yes, especially Heart of the Sunrise and South Side Of The Sky, from the album Fragile, released also under the sign Sagittarius, in the same year that I was born.
Most of the images are from starrynightphotos.com.
I used the Jammit version of the track without bass so I was able to put my bass only on the mix. You can learn more about this app at www.jammit.com

Hi Wes, the bass was lent from a friend who has a nice collection of older basses. He owns that Telecaster and in fact another red one. From interviews on the internet I read that Chris played his white Telecaster for this song. Much to my surprise because we all think Chris' sound is the Rickenbacker sound, whereas we find out that Chris still sounds like Chris on a lot of different basses. I would love to do another one from tales and the Revealing is perhaps the strongest option! Thanks!
I never understood how the song was "forgotten" by the band so many years when so many fans love it so much. In a way it's part of it's own charm - to be so brilliant and obscured at the same time! Thanks!
It has to do with the piano "middle bits". Either Rick forgot how to play it or Patrick/Tony couldn't play it right. There's an interview with jon/Rick somewhere. I couldn't find it.
Chris's Ric was amazing but as Chris often commented the neck pickup was weak and he needed the greater punch that the Fender could provide him on some earlier albums, and later 70's like parallels ...You allow me to close my eyes and still feel like Chris's playing spirit is still alive and well...
Thank you Christopher! We now realize how Chris sometimes went for different sounding basses, such as the Fenders, Gibsons or the Tobiases and yet still makes them sound like only he can do, keeping his own identity allied to the bass characteristics.
Geddy chose right!
Another great job! I've listened and studied Bill Bruford and Chris Squire for 42 years, wish I could play my drums with your bass playing :)
Thanks - it's great to hear from you!
The Rotosound strings, as new as possible, the sound comes also from the picking attack, and I used the Sansamp BDDI as preamp. Thanks!
I heard about those strings because of Chris. He probably increased their business 1,000%. I put them on a Gibson Ripper I had about 77. It was very hard on the frets. When Fragile came with South Side, Howe was using the most rocked out edgy tone of his entire career. They didn't do it often but I did see it a few times.Anderson, Howe, Squire Wakeman and White. was the most powerful lineup they ever had. That is why it is known as the Classic lineup. They were in a musical universe all their own. I am only discovering your delightful tributes. Thank you!
@@Magnetron33 Thanks again! I hope to see you tomorrow in the premiere for PFC8!
This shows me that the sound is more in the fingers than the gear. This is an excellent Chris Squire sound using a very un-Squirelike bass, and yet it sounds perfect.
Funny enough, I think Chris used a Telecaster bass recording this track. If not I know for sure it was the same bass he used to record Time and a Word which I know wasn't a Rickenbacker.
Chris always made his basses sound like himself, and that's what I tried to do. I agree with your view. Thank you, Mike.
great job! holy shit
Thank you!
bravo Miguel, er Mejo, Il miglior modo per rivalutare e onorare il grande Chris...e...come si dice " l'alievo supera il maestro "
This bass is so awesome and beautiful! And you play it perfectly! Awesome cover!
Awesome. Love Bruford's 2 against 3 in this one (triplets/eighth notes) esp. near the end.
I know you've heard it a thousand times, but... YOU ARE AWESOME! Really good work!
By the way, can you tell me what is a model of this bass?
I'm thinking it's a Telecaster bass. From 68 to 70 something.
Thank you!
Solid as a rock! Congrats. Chris would approve and appreciate. Thanks.
Thank you very much Mirek
@@miguelbass Interesting how you got the right tone with a Fender. Just goes to show you don't necessarily need the Rick to do it, but it helps. 🙂
Bang on Miguel. All your covers of Chris are perfect. Howe about Fish Out Of Water. Please, please
Thank you for taking me to the stars YES!!
Thank you very much for watching! I s your username related with Zero7 - I love that album!
@@miguelbass Just coincidence but I love Zero7 too!
Grazie!
Thanks Alfonso!
You're right, that clip suffers from older youtube audio quality standard. Right now I don't have time to make a new clip but I will "remaster" the old one. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thank you very much!
Chris Squire was a genius
Fantastic!
May I suggest "The fountain of Salmacis" from Genesis? It would be a legendary bass cover.
!!Bien Miguel!! Conocí a Yes a traves de Fragile. Siempre estarán en mi memoria esas líneas de bajo.
Gracias, Miguel! Um abraço!
Thanks!
Brilliant interpretation Miguel....this song and the vocals and the musicianship is just as top-notch today in 2018 as it was when the album was released!
I fully agree Peter... I heard this song today and I'm still amazed. It used to be a "hidden gem" some time ago but I think by now everyone recognizes its value within Fragile.
Wonderfull !!!
Thanks Alejandro!
what an excellent video! ive watched too many yes bass covers to count but this is right on and i can honestly say riveting! you created a whole story and i couldnt look away. such an underrated song and one of my favorites. cheers!
Thank you very much - in some songs I try to translate to the video some impressions of my experience of listening to the song... and how it was pictured in my mind .. through all these years.
It's relatively simpler than many other of Chris' basslines but very effective, suits the song :) Thanks
Dude! Greetings from Atlanta GA. Once again... tremendous! Thank you! Your forever fan.

Tremendous. Your timing is impeccable.

Abraço, Pedro! Obrigado
Great job!
great!
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
This is one of my favorite Yes' songs, and I'm happy that they played it live in 2003/4 (Lugano, Montreaux etc.). For this song, in the gig in Lugano Chris used his strange green 80s bass, a Mouridian maybe? Your playing is stunning!
Good morning, Laura. I also remember Chris playing South Side of The Sky both with Jon and Benoit - he would also use the Lakland bass. Originally it was his fender telecaster bass that was very much used in the early days. Thank you very much 🎶
@@miguelbass Thank you: very interesting. I didn't know the name of that green bass.
@@LauraZarri74 the green one is the Mouradian CS-74 designed by Chris and Jim Mouradian. The Lakland is the Fender type grey one that Chris was using since the magnification tour and album.
@@miguelbass Thank you! You know everything about Chris! Wow!
@@LauraZarri74 you are most welcome, Laura! Have a pleasant evening.
Lovely. I have that bass.
I do not :) It was borrowed from a friend! You have a treasure! And thank you very much for watching!
I've always loved this song.
Excellent playing ! Sounds really great :)
You are showing us how great Chris was, up close to see the lines. Thank you.
Thank you very much Jesse!
Nice!
Thanks again :)
So inspirational. Chris will love this!
This song's bass has always seemed lost in the background, studio or live. You've brought it up front where it belongs and revealed brand-new details. Thanks once again, Miguel.
A great example of a great rock-bassplayer ... perfect!!! Obrigado, Ric/
Wow Miguel, this is absolutely stunning!!! The amount of work you must have put into this is amazing... It's so well thought out...the white clothes changing colors with the stars and constellation maps... the camera angles... and of course your perfect playing and tone. You have outdone yourself yet again!!! :D
great stuff
Thank you very much!
Thank you!
Have you done And You and I? Would love to see it!! Great channel, great playing!!!!
Hi Jay! Thanks for the suggestion. I will consider it as soon I have time to make more videos.
Very well done. My favourite one to play on guitar.
It's the owner of the site where I took most of the photos. No pun :) Thanks!
Puta merda! Passo mal com seus vídeos. Absolutamente incrível! Parabéns mais uma vez!
Excellent job, Miguel!
;)
Thanks Jim, As Andy said the original bass on the recording seems to have been Chris' white Telecaster
