What a deal! And sure Manila looks old but that's part of its charm! Pastil is specifically made by the Maguindanao people who live in southern Mindanao (in fact the name Mindanao is a Spanish corruption of the name Maguindanao). They're a part of the wider Moro people. They've historically had their own sultanate called the Sultanate of Maguindanao (which Cotabato was its capital) that stayed around from 1520 up to 1905, managing to counter the Spanish before finally being beaten by the Americans. After a long fight with the Filipino government stemming from the Jabidah massacre in 1968, this led to the eventual creation of the Bangsamoro autonomous region

My parents are both from mindanao but i was born in malaysia and been living my whole life here. I remember when i was still small, mom always make pastil for breakfast and for our lunch boxes for us siblings to bring to school. I didnt know that pastil is a mindanao native food not until i was 12 or something when my mom told me that she always eat pastil almost everyday back in her hometown. I like it very much. Comfort food.
Mindanao is not mostly a Muslim area, but it is basically mixed with people living together -- Christians, Muslims and different native tribes of the Philippines.
In the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta, you can buy a food called "nasi kucing" for IDR 2000 = $0.13. Just like pastil, rice with side dishes wrapped in banana leaves...
@@moymoythehappymonkey3155 yes it's spicy, usually there are also non-spicy options, or you can add your own chili sauce (sambal) provided there to make it spicier
While Manila became a walled city by the Spanish, when the US got control, they got city planner Daniel Burnham to adapt Manila to modern needs. The Burnham Plan included the development of a road system, the use of waterways for transportation, and the beautification of Manila with waterfront improvements and construction of parks, parkways, and buildings. The planned buildings included a government center occupying all of Wallace Field, which extends from Rizal Park to the present Taft Avenue. The Philippine capitol was to rise at the Taft Avenue end of the field, facing the sea. Along with buildings for government bureaus and departments, it would form a quadrangle with a central lagoon and a monument to José Rizal at the other end of the field. Of Burnham's proposed government center, only three units, the Legislative Building, and the buildings of the Finance and Agricultural Departments, were completed before World War II began. Daniel Burnham is the same guy behind NYC's Flatiron Building and DC's Union Station
Thats ironic considering what a shithole manila is. Or not; anyone whose actually lived in the USA knows that mediocre design and infrastructure of cities and suburbs affects even the upper classes.
More like nasi kucing than nasi uduk i think. Nasi uduk not spicy but usually there is chili sauce provided if u want. Nasi uduk similar with nasi lemak in malaysia
Hey Drew, it's easier to just wash you hand clean and eat straight using it, be more connected with the food, and the food will be 10x tastier too.. trust me.. and there will be no extra plastic to throw away.
This just came on time for iftar hehehe😉 Delish! (We say sarap in Tagalog, sedap in Bahasa). Ramadhan Kareem for those of us fasting (and celebrating)🕌
a lot of new bloggers coming to Philippines, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan...... I have noticed a lot of viewers every time I have checked the contents.
I hope that filipinos will promote their original world famous succulent food a legendary food staple in filipino table and prbably the cheapest. Its PAGPAG. A Succulent and tasty meat from leftover table scraps sold by restaurants from fastfood to high end even karenderya sell their meat tablescrap leftovers. Why filipinos are not promoting this food.
It's not something that one should be proud of. Pagpag is one of the most blatant symbols of extreme poverty in the Philippines. No one deserves to eat leftovers from trash but extreme poverty has forced some people to do so.
GANYAN NALANG SANA, YONG PANGAKO NI BBM NA 20 P NA BIGAS, GAWIN NYA NALANG LUTO NA KAKANIN AT ULAM with 20 pesos lng,IWAN LANG KONG DI MANAHIMIK YANG MGA PINKLAWAN, 👍👍👍nyo Ako Kong sang ayon kayo👍👍

85% Christians 15% Muslims
1:25 I'd like to correct you on that Drew. Mindanao is mostly Christian but majority of the Muslim people in the Philippines reside in Mindanao
Drew, you are a gift to this world.
Enjoyyy Drew as much as you can🤍🕊

And now most of old manila buildings are in ruins because the government doesnt know how to protect and preserve them.

I was also shocked when I ordered the pastil in General Santos City around 7 years ago. It was only 8 pesos during that time.
This just came on time for iftar hehehe😉 Delish! (We say sarap in Tagalog, sedap in Bahasa). Ramadhan Kareem for those of us fasting (and celebrating)🕌

Not really. One pastil isn't that much, so 10 pastils is kinda like one big plate of rice and chicken, pretty normal for a strong eater.

Why are you afraid of Muslims?
You're very ignorant then. I'm Catholic Filipino and I love our Muslim brothers. Shows how bigoted you are.
