Thanks for this wonderful article...I thought I was one of only a few "nuts" that collected Stan Smith 1s, and can tell the difference between all the various versions. I started wearing them in the 70s-80s, but then got discouraged when Adidas seemed to cheapen them up late in the 80s-90s. I then began looking for the originals or "dead stock" original new ones. And yes, it appears as though Adidas has tried to return the Stan Smiths to their original design, but not quite. I would love to find a pair of those Stan Smith high tops! Stan Smiths have a classic design that look great with just about any outfit, weather it be for sport or semi formal attire. Other brands have tried, but will never matched them. I just hope that Adidas will return the Stan Smiths to the exact construction and materials used in the late 70-80s. I even remember when they added the little slot in the foam tongue to keep the tongues from flopping all the way over to one side.... I guess I need to 'get a life"!
I love this video. love my Stan smiths. started collecting after the relaunch. up to 6 pairs now :) consortium releases, vulcanized skate model, suede, leather, strap model. love em all. wish you did a video on the comparison in quality btwn the US relaunch and the international version?
I can't believe I watched a 28 minute video of sneakers gradually spinning in a clockwise circle while listening to a narrator discussing their history.
Any Adidas tennis shoe are mint: Rod Laver (Vintage), Wilhelm Bungert...Adidas Newcombe (Lacombe) they all work for me--shout out to Harputs (San Francisco) and K-Skit (Tokyo) where I was copping them in the 1990s
Please more Gary Aspden. More, more, more.

Fantastic. Never knew a lot of the information mentioned. Great stuff.
Was in Paris a couple or so years ago and can confirm Stan Smith is their favourite. Adidas very popular there.

Comprehensive in Historical Scope.
Nicely done
Nice!
Who has a pair? Puts hand up. Has to be classic white with green. I've had 6 pairs over the duration of my trainer career.
I have a pair of 1980’s Stan Smith’s made in France, as new in original box, UK size 9.5.
