    Good points Jade. Likewise I feel more of a connection with an actual keyboard than a desktop module. I've never owned a desktop module as I just don't like the idea of having to plug in a controller keyboard. I'll even take the slim keys over a desktop model. That said I do see the advantage of having desktop modules. Less space is taken up so more equipment can be stored to create your sounds. It just doesn't appeal to me. I just want to switch on and go.

      Desktop modules are good if your like me and cant get enough hardware. Just get a good midi controller or 2 and your good.

    great points! something i think missed though is with desktops and a master midi keyboard, you can easily just change midi channels on the keyboard to quickly switch the synth controlled. good flexibility for sequencing and playing/jamming there.

    Sometimes its nice to have a keyboard synth connected to a desktop synth. For layered sounds. Keep up the videos Jade.

    I mostly like the keyboard versions of synths because like you have mention, I just like to turn it on and just start playing. I have a Kawai K5000s and I have so much fun playing it and having all that hands on control. The rack version doesn't feel the same even with a controller attached to it.

    Nice. What is missing is more space with the commands on the keyboard edition obviously, ease of use to turn knobs, more space= more pleasure to search for a sound.

    Also vintage gear usually has a better Midi application on the rack or desktop versions of the synth. Korg EX 800 or the enoniq EPSr are good examples of this.

    As long as the modular synth has the knob/faders for the parameters to be adjusted in realtime, I'll go with them. I'm quickly running out of space, got modules just sitting off to the side, unplugged now. Right now I've got like, 6 synths (rack and modular) midi'ed to a usb keyboard controller with a 12-slot midi sync box. Better make my next purchases count! LOL!

    Personally, I love my Tetra! It’s a discontinued model, so it might be a couple years away from achieving “vintage” status. Everywhere I perform has a midi keyboard already, so I just take my tones from the studio to the stage and never menu dive. When recording/jamming in my cramped apartment, I’m always glad I chose the module over a big honking synth.

    you uuhh!!! It is nice you put in light those little topics.
    I always thought the same.
    I prefer modules over the keyboard version; but what I dislike from modules system is that those modules has not exactly what you said as "same functionality" , most of times they miss pitch bender and mod wheel/pad, and as well few useful buttons. This we see it in Blofeld where it lacks as well the octave buttons ( a part of the SL ) , or Nord leads and Virus, the same. Quite disturbing I would say!! The only ones who came near to this is Roland with their modules Boutiques where they included mod and pitch. Fair!!!

    Yep, seems obvious, I would add a workstation like the Motif, or the Triton the rack units are usually functionally vastly different. That's one reason that Yamaha calls them "tone banks". The majority of the arranging, and onboard sequencing functions are lost. One can still edit sounds, but the rack versions are no longer the "workstation" it's just the sound banks, effects, and sound editing of the keyboard version. And not all workstation synths loose the same features.

    All you need if you want to run a lot of keyboards is a good MIDI patchbay or something like the MIDI Solutions "quadra thru" box. I have 10 or 12 keyboards at any given time all linked via MIDI and CV.

    great points. whats the point of a little mono synth if u have a modular already

  • @spacefacts2553

    what do you think of a high end midi controller that controls a few different sound modules for live performance? The Roland D-05 or SD-50 for instance, that have a lot of overlap in patches as a keyboard arranger. I'm considering going that route as I don't have space for a 61 key arranger and a 61 key midi controller. Having a nicer midi keyboard as opposed to mid level builds of both seems nice to me.

    I'm pretty module driven but they're volcas, I have my xr20 driving my volca bears whole NY novation circuit drives the keys and a monologue

  • @Assortment54321
    @Assortment54321 6 лет назад

    Do you know of any products that allow for a single midi controller to switch between desktop modules?

  • @coyote-wang
    @coyote-wang 6 лет назад

    The weak point of the circuit is it's weird drum mapping which is why i use the xr20. I got it for cheap and it gives the volca beats Linn Dr style swing and rubber pads to play the analog drums. But the drum sequencer on the circuit is amazing you can do complex polyrhythms and shifting time signatures on the circuit sequencer most software sequencers make polyrhythms impossible or incredibly tedious.

    I have a midi controller 88 keys but instead of a module I have a 61 keys keyboard. It takes a lot of room but also like the looks of the 2nd keyboard. I've been thinking of selling the second keyboard and start using the PC as a module. Any thoughts? And Thanks you.

  • @Matthewsavant

    I don’t know if it’s me but I “connect” to keyboard synths better. Being limited on space I am absolutely cool with desktop modules but just on a personal level I feel having an instrument that I can take away from the studio and just play makes me more attached to it. That being said I do prefer the Blofeld desktop to the keyboard version but with the nord lead 3 I’ve owned the rack and keyboard and having the keyboard just feels better to me. Yet with the Elektron analog four and Monomachine I prefer the form factor of the desktop versions (especially since they line up with the octatrack, machinedrum and analog RYTM) The DSI Pro 2 is one of my current favorite synths at the moment and I couldn’t imagine using a desktop version of it. I think at the end of the day it comes down to 1. How much space do you have and 2. Is it an instrument that you feel more connected to when it is a stand alone.

    • @JAdeWii_
      @JAdeWii_  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah i totally agree, if I had the space and resources I would totally have a room full of keyboard synths! Congrats on the Pro 2, I've been wanting one forever.

    • @Matthewsavant
      @Matthewsavant 6 лет назад

      Dawless Jammin' Thanks! I couldn’t recommend it more, especially with modular. I have my 9U of eurorack with the Analog four’s 4 CV outputs and the Pro2’s 4 CV outs and 4 CV ins all talking to each other. It’s essentially like one mega synth! All that (plus the rest of my studio) runs through the Octatrack for massive FX chains and sampling. I’m thinking about getting some kind of camera to do RUclips videos as well, I run a small sound design company and was thinking of doing patch explanations, tutorials and demos :)

    • @JAdeWii_

      Cause machine is a controller which requires a daw to function, which defeats the purpose of this group.

    love your videos also. jammin dawless is the way to go. i cant enjoy making music on a computer. its so boring and uninspiring. can you even sell used software synth programs??? what happens if your computer fails?? do you lose your soft synth???? there not even possesions, which also has a couple cons.

    My cat is called Jade, she likes walking over my equipment while i try to make music... i have to buy deck savers for everything so she doesn't break stuff... and deck savers aren't cheap... dont know why ... its just a bit of plastic... fleasing the tech addict in the throws of uncontrollable gas leaks... i don't know... new tech should have some sort of mental health warning... Ok... rant over... as you were...🤘

    Moving the hand over long distances can be a burden and inefficient.
    Connecting all the MIDI modules to a single master midi controller/keyboard is one solution.

    Most of these guys wanting desktops only are one of those untalented "musicians" who just turn some knobs here, repeating the same crap for a couple minutes. Keyboards FTW! If you complain about space, get rid of your shit and make more space. Those Boutique's are crap.
