I'm sort of a late bloomer. I recently found out about this a few years ago and realized there was a community of people who dress like this every day. I've learnt that I've always liked and gravitated to older movies, music, and clothing. I think travel is important and that includes time travel. When I wear vintage or even just walk through an antique shop, in a way I'm time traveling.

I’ve started this love of clothing and antiques of the era back when I was still in the closet as a transman and loved to research lgbt history before the 50s to feel validated finding people like me and to just enjoy how fitting 1920s styles were that fit me well compared to the bold masculine rectangular look of 50s suits. Oh, a wholehearted yes to everything in this video!! The whole "Don't you wish you lived back then" question really bothers me; I tend to wear a lot of mid to late Victorian stuff (mostly 1850s bc I can still get away with a corded petticoat that way), and like...as a person who's against the persecution of people of colour, and as a bi pagan woman, no, I don't want to live back then! Hell, even on a superficial level, there's a lot of modern stuff I just wouldn't want to give up. But like, the safety of people of colour (especially native nations, African Americans, and Chinese Americans, who all had a rough go of it where I live now, back in the 19th century) matters immensely to me, so I wouldn't want to regress. Also, to a far lesser extent of persecution, my family is from Ireland, and that era wasn't exactly the safest for us, either. And in the Victorian era, you can forget about being an out and proud pagan, or basically any gender and orientation that isn't cishet man if you want any rights. And if I was in the Victorian era, I couldn't read Lord of the Rings!

Oh I get that “don’t you wish you lived back then/do you think you were born in the wrong time?” question a lot.
I’m a queer, disabled woman. No. The great thing about now is that I can take what I like (and I actually like different things from different eras, so I can wear Edwardian inspired one day and 1940s the next), and leave the rest. I can wear whatever fashion I like now. I would have been stuck wearing only the fashion of the day back then. And then there’s the fact that when people ask this question, I’m very visibly at least two of the three things I mentioned. You’d think people would realise that, no, I wouldn’t have had a great time back then. The world was even less wheelchair friendly than it is today (and it’s still not particularly good in that regard). I like having rights. I like not being sent off to live in a care home. Or sterilised due to eugenics laws.
It seems a pretty silly question to me. I can still listen to the music now. I can still wear my favourite fashions now, plus I have (some) rights. Why would I want go go back to a time before smartphones? They’re the only thing that’s light enough for me to hold and entertain myself with. I’d be stuck staring at the walls in previous decades. I mean, I wouldn’t be rich enough to have someone read to me (which I hate anyway) all the time. And I so loathe just doing nothing. I have to have my mind occupied at all times that I’m not asleep- that means smartphones. No, living in previous decades (even just the 90s) would suck for me.

And my heart skipped in gratitude, moved, when you mentioned the Native American's, the People of The First Nation. Because noone ever does. People talk about the greatness of America, the land of the free...and that upsets me! And I'm not gonna get all political, so I leave it at that and just say thank you! It is wonderful that we are now able, for the most part anyway to take all the good things from the past, all the beautiful things and incorporate them, transform ourselves into who we are, express ourselves...and look fabulous!!!😂😇😜

Your comments on "Vintage style NOT vintage values" reflects so much how I have always felt about history. While, I do not dress in a historical fashion on a daily basis (yet!), I dream of it and love the few times a year I do get to experience the embodiment of the wardrobe worn in years past. I love the history of fashion but I find it often limited to the European and then US trends when I would love to see the parallels between all parts of the world, like we know silks and other fabrics were brought from Asia, what influences were traded between those two worlds at that time? I wish to know how the Western fashion from Europe and US travelled down to Chile? I know how the Spanish influence came but not so much the other parts of Europe. My parents are from Chile and I was born+raised here in Australia who is a baby country in comparison to the rest of the word.
I love the costumes of the past, from many parts of the world, however I tend to feel excluded because of my skin colour and because I’m not so into the actual authenticity, I’m much too modern to prefer the complexities of doing up a million buttons, buckles, laces, ties, etc while I think of there were modern things available back then, a lot of garments would have been made very differently. I especially love the meshing of modern and vintage. Bringing the past into the now. I know it’s not for everyone’s taste but that’s what’s so great about it, we all are inspired by the dress and we each can make it our own.
    I loved the interview 💖

My Grandfather and my Dad used to dress like this, but my Dad changed as fashions changed. I never forgave him for giving up the hats!! That was my favorite thing about his style of dress. It went from truly classy and hip to everyday corporate drab...He did thought keep the hankie in the dress pocket of a suit jacket and always wore cuff-links. He did give up the vest with the suit jacket...He looked so special all of the time. At least I have the memories to keep! His Father was a band leader at a municipal park and had the first orchestra in a municipal park and I have the piano that was used at that time. It's very special to me. It's a very old upright piano that actually still keeps in tune! It was refurbished a couple of times over the years, but it is amazing that it still sounds great. Thank you for posting this video. Hi from the 🇬🇧. I love your style, I studied fashion at college and have always been intrigued and enamoured by vintage fashion. Although I'm not in the vintage community and only occasionally wear vintage pieces my favourite eras are the 1940s/50s and 60s.
My inspiration being the arrival of the SS Windrush ship to the UK in 1940s and proudly seeing black Caribbeans arriving smartly dressed in their Sunday best to make a better life. Also a lot of the pics taken then showed the men were snappy dressers in their pork pie trilbys and slim pants and the women elegant in their cat eye glasses, crinolines and kitten heels.
Its kind of weird because I feel like I romanticise this time a little too much maybe because I love the clothing and styles. But my parents arrived from Jamaica 🇯🇲 and Cuba🇨🇺 in the 60s and were also marginalised and discriminated against for housing and work due to the colour bar. So it's bitter sweet but never the less, I can appreciate the looks without the awful sentiment. But the irony of that is black people are currently and historically responsible for creating numerous trends in fashion and culture going back many many decades. I guess what I'm saying is we mustn't feel intimidated or limited by the above. Its just clothing that anyone can wear.
I want to see more poc embracing vintage looks and lifestyle and constantly seek them out on RUclips and other social media. It's nice to know I'm not alone in my love for vintage as a black British woman and there is a huge multicultural community hungry for more.

Another factor in why someone might not want to go back in time to when [insert preferred style here] was popular could be that they wouldn't have been able to study it then! It would just be clothing, and while it's certainly possible to analyze modern clothing, the lens of history provides context that can't otherwise be achieved.

I may be very white (pale with a German last name; it's a thing) but I'm also a woman, part of the LGBT community, disabled, and someone who LOVES vintage fashion and history. This video spoke to me.
Thank you for making sure so many of us feel seen, appreciated, and accepted.

Well spoken...well done. I also like the Vintage Style not Vintage Values. I always like the style but always thought as a black person...umm I don't wanna go back there! Nice video...I'll look for you in Harlem! :)

Some day I'll get my poop in a group and get into the suits I want. (Its hard as a transman, my sizes are weird. I don't want to invest in suits now, when I know my body is changing, tailoring and retailoring items would be costly and time consuming)

About hats: since they were so much a staple accessory throughout history, do you think hat-wearing will ever come back into the mainstream? In other words, is this hatless moment merely a blip or a seismic shift?

    • @DandyWellington

Hats are still a part of our lives it's just different hats are in vogue now that dress hat from the teens to 60s. Hats are still a great form of self expression for all kinds of people.

Sir, I really like the fedora's you are styling. Living in the midwest in a small town I do not have access to the various had stores that you probably have in New York. I very much like the Fedoras with the wide brims and tall crowns. Are you purchasing these in "vintage Stores"? You have so many of them- and I know you have been collecting them for quite a few years. Do you have any suggestions for someone like me as to how to get started. I thank you in advance and appreciate your assistance with this matter.

I have long said that ASPECTS of vintage life appeal to me, not the entire ball of wax. Some things are better now, but not everything. Some things are worse now, but not everything. I like vintage cologne scent profiles more than modern ones. I like attention to dress more mid-century and earlier than present-day. Certain aspects of life were simpler then.

"Don't you wish you lived back then"
Why would ANYONE, even if you are as white as the snow, straight as a line, as religious as a minister, and as male as a post office, want to go back to the 40s. Like, beyond the obvious cultural issues, you'd loose out on every modern amenity and advancement, in favor of music and ascetics that you can still find more easily. If you want the looks, music, and clothing of the 50s, the 40s, the 20s, hell even the 1800ds, you can still have it, likely for cheaper, today AND you get computers, tvs, and other modern advantages.
Thats the thing with the past, we have the ability to take the cool things, like fancy suits, art deco, and other good things from the past while (at least trying to) leave things like racism, homophobia, and classism in the past

AHAH bernadette looks like she'd much rather be hiding in a back corner of an edwardian library with a seven foot high wall of books shielding her from view than out and about, peopleing in a speakeasy in Harlem.

      Agree 💚
I think the intention was good, but differently abled is a euphamism people use bc they think being disabled is a bad thing. It's fine to just say disabled.
