  • Here is a brief overview of the Mobile Lounges (aka; people movers) that are still in service at Washington Dulles International Airport. As a former operator of these machines, I made this short video from some of the images I took over the years.
Why are they called 'Mobile Lounges'? Well, back in the day, up until some time in the 1980's when the interim midfield terminal was built, they would bring passengers directly to aircraft from the main terminal. Depending on your airline and which level of service you were flying (first class/business/coach), these giant buses served as an in-transit lounge where you were served drinks from the on-board bar while smoking your favorite cigarette as you waited to board your flight. Hence the name: Mobile Lounge!
Today, they are supplemented by the underground Aerotrain system as well as moving sidewalks. However, they still carry a substantial number of passengers across the airfield. (I would give a more accurate number, but I believe that my former employer would dispute my claim.)
Suffice it to say, if your next flight takes you through Dulles International Airport, there's a very good chance that you'll be riding the mobile lounge at some point during your journey.

Hello. Do you have a user manual and possibly a maintenance manual? I would like to recreate it in 3D as accurately as possible to ensure a virtual future for this great piece of equipment and aeronautical history when they have completely ceased to be used.
