Having crewed in both the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, I was unsurprised at what the reporter heard when he spoke with a group of crew. No doubt he hoped to uncover something shocking. What does he actually hear? “It’s exhausting, but it’s great fun”. It’s also tax free. It’s unfortunate that a young man drowned, but his death had nothing to do with the owners or other crew. Sorry, but youth + partying + alcohol + a boat sometimes = trouble. Yes, the owners should have sent someone to his funeral. But the reality is that crew are hired through crew agencies, that crew members are mostly young and that the workforce is highly transient. Indeed, one of the attractions is the ability to change boats/destinations easily.
But someone on the yacht should have been on an active watch to let the crewman inside. So your saying that on ANY mega-yacht, moored or docked in port, you can just walk aboard and start climbing around on her and no one will notice? Sure, right... and you state you have crewed on yachts? The captain of this yacht is DIRECTLY responsible for his crew member's death if a proper dockside watch and security was not in place. End of story.
See More Toys Sorry, but the young man’s mother does not make any allegations against the owner or captain, apart from callousness with respect to the funeral.
Yes, I understand and feel for her position, but the accident should not have happened. The crew member's actions contributed a lot to this accident, but as you stated, those types of actions by crew members are common knowledge. I have skippered large yachts. People and/or crew members should not be allowed to come aboard your yacht in the middle of the night and start climbing around. Someone should not even be able to come aboard unless invited. Someone should have been on an active watch and making rounds. "Locked the doors." Yeah, I'll come steal your small boat(s) and outboard(s) if that is your security system. If an active watch was not set at the time, the owner and captain are responsible for a part of the legal liability of his death, IMHO.

I feel bad for the mother that her son died, but it's not the yacht owner's fault, or even indicative of something wrong with yachting, which seems to be the intent of this mini-docu. The kid got drunk and did something stupid.
Jonathan Stewart the child was overworked. Why was the cabins locked. Who was the owner of the yacht? Yes his death was unfortunate but living rich also means having responsibility for people working for you.
Stop calling him "THE CHILD". He was his mother's child, but he was an adult. He worked a double, then CHOSE to go out partying. The article didn't say, so i won't assume he had been drinking, but it is certainly a possibility. He left his group, went to the ship, and experienced what kids his age experience all the time - trouble with keys. He did not have one. He then chose, tired and maybe influenced, to climb to the top of a sleek yacht, at night, and tragedy followed. I agree with my bro Jonathan.
So this young man was tired from working back to back shifts, so his solution was to go out drinking so late that he was locked out of the boat. His next brilliant idea was to scale the outside of a yacht, while drunk, to get inside. And somehow, this is supposed to reflect on the yacht owners? There are too many reasonable alternatives that he could have taken for me to mention but the bottom line is grown adults need to be responsible for themselves and make proper decisions. I see nothing here that being in a union would have solved. Unions don't stop people from being risk takers who make bad decisions. He could have just as easily gotten too drunk and have the same accident after working one shift.
So her son works a double shift, which means hes probably pretty tired. And instead of choosing to go to sleep, he chooses to go out drinking, then he stumbles back to the boat drunk, finds it locked, and instead of calling for someone to let him in, or just waiting for his other crew mates to come back, he chooses to climb up the side of the yacht, falls, and drowns. How the hell is that a problem with the yachting industry and yacht owners? I'll grant you that staff can work long hours, but if at the end of your long shift you decide to go out drinking rather than going to bed, whatever happens is on you.
So, one tragic death and vague statements about overworked crew, combined with some beauty shots of a yacht. Where are the actual facts of his death from an official? Where's the opportunity for rebuttal by an industry representative? This just feels like a sloppy hit piece.
What responsibility were the rich lacking? This idiot went out drinking after a double shift then climbed to the top of a 6-story yacht to fall to his death. What a shocker.

My friend is a yacht captain based in California, former chief officer on tankers. He has worked for some very wealthy people and they all make him sign a nondisclosure agreement. He said that the crew works long hours and it all depends on who's boat you wind up on for your quality of life. Some owners treat the crew far better than others.
he worked a double shift, then decided to right away get drunk in party then come back alone and climb around a giant boat and slip and fell. there's no fault on the yacht or the owner.
So, Michael drowned after falling from a 65 million pound yacht! - Billy drowned falling from a 50 pond canoe. How about covering Billy, Guardian? We all know you hate the rich. Change the record FFS!
Leggo My Ego he wasn't wearing a life jacket. Billy probably didn't know how to swim. Most deaths are because people don't wear their PFD's as required by law.
i live in a yacht base island in the Caribbean and unfortunately 95% of the yachty crews that are under 27 get absolutely wasted and consume mountains of cocain, its the truth and the only way deaths like these are prevented is with drug tests and strict rules about off the job behaviour.
Plenty of captains aged well over 27 getting wasted too! However, on our 76m nobody drinks, there are 6 beers left from a 12 pack from Christmas sitting in the walk-in fridge.
The weak and/or stupid die while those who are better survive, if you try to climb up into your cabin instead of finding someone to unlock it or sleeping somewhere else and you get yourself killed in the process then you are stupid and weak.
While what happened to her son was tragic, I fail to see how it was the owner's fault. She mentions Michael Douglas and his wife, but how are they involved, other than bad timing?
Seeing other yacht crew videos, I'm impressed with how safety conscious they are; safety systems are hi-tech amazing. The sea can be unforgiving, there are risks. Rich people demanding? No really.
Andrew Leonardi the absurdity of this culture is more interesting than the luxury of it. How many people can relate to owning a 275 million dollar yacht? the broker says "plenty" of people. That's an absurd statement just by itself.
Yes, a tragedy for sure no person should die so young. When do we take responsibility for our actions? He had options, find a room, make a call --- Sleep on the deck. Climbing to the top was his choice and sadly it turned out badly.
Staying on one of the nicest yachts in the world with all the finest amenities and services seems like a real tough job! How do they work in such horrible conditions?!?
In a super yatch owners should not allow crew touch any alchool at all . Crew members must be well aware at all times just in case .Emergencies do happen and all must be ready .With water proximity even swimming pools are dangerous if combined with alchool. They are dangerous even without allchool . Not to mention the vast oceans !
Why are they over dramatising this? Seems like a any job where you need adhere to safety standards. Condolences to the guys family but he shouldn't doing cirque du soleil stunts on a yacht
What the video neglects to mention is that the yacht the kid fell off has a locked-out procedure for crews, and even a spare key that allows the crew to get in the yacht.
Thank you for this story...That was sad that the mother of a crew member, " Michael". God Bless his mother who still has her son in her heart still so much......God Bless the crews who work on super yachts...
Why is it the owner’s fault that a drunk dude tried to get access to a yacht which he doesn’t own? Should have gotten a room somewhere to sleep it off.
My wife and I are fairly well off and anyone who works for us are treated like an extension of our family and all have our cell phone number. I get the kid was more than likely drunk but its not only the kids fault the yacht to be locked. I also never expect people to work extremely long hours for modest amounts of money. There is nothing worse than wealthy people who thinks money makes them special, all people should be treat with respect.
While I feel for the lady the idea that the multi-million dollar business of luxury yachting would simply stop for her sons passing is not based on reality. People pay a fortune to charter these boats and simply put the show must go on. No one is holding any of those staff at gunpoint demanding they accept their contracts and they normally welcome to step off at any port of their choosing should they wish to quit. The kid had to too much to drink and tried something silly instead of sleeping it off on the deck. I am sorry for her but that is nothing to do with this type of boating.
Oh no, my son was so dumb, he thought it is a clever idea to climb drunken around a yacht in the dark. And when the inevitable happens, let's just blame the owner, the lack of unions and the whole yachting "culture" which all had absolutely nothing to do with the accident. Top quality journalism for sure!
Ok so you work really hard to earn a Billion dollars. So did you do it to shop at Dollar general? No you did it to be able to buy what ever you want. And a lot of wealthy people help a lot of less fortunate people.
Lol you “work hard” to become a billionaire. Sure that’s exactly how one becomes a billionaire. By working hard. Lofl! Continue toiling your life away, you only need to work harder as boxer used to say...
I may be missing something but it sounds like this young man went out and drank, was exhausted then climbed up on a ship and tragically fell. That’s not exactly the fault of anyone but himself, unless there are additional facts.
Sry but the guy got drunk, tried to climb and fell and died. How is that even yacht-specific? That can happen literally anywhere, where there´s anything that´s high enough.
_When you see an owner looking at yachts, they're also looking at what it represents, so it represents them._ Wow, quality wisdom right there :/ I thought it represents their neighbour's dog
Rich man buys yatch👍 Rich man hires a young guy to work on the yatch 🤙Young guy goes out to party and comes back exhausted and drunk wanting to rest✌🏿Doors are locked so young drunk guy does a stupid thing climbing onto the top of the yatch trying to find an open compartment to enter instead of waiting for someone to come open the door👎🏻... Young guy falls off the yatch and dies. 🙀 Owner is upset that the kid got drunk and fell to his death off his precious yatch doing something stupid and doesn’t attend funeral.😬 Mom is super mad at yatch owner and demand apology for her stupid drunk son’s death. HOW IS THE DEATH HIS FAULT? 🤔 *According to the story, the crew has maximum amount of hours they can work on the yatch then allowed to rest. He got drunk on his free-time and wasn’t even supposed to be working when he died. Conclusion; Yatch owner didn’t break any laws and his vacation was inconvenienced by the preventable death. Not that he doesn’t care as a human being but he or she was mad that safety rules were not followed by the guy.
Sooooo ok let me get this straight I worked a sidejob yesterday outside in the heat and when I got done wife and I went had dinner and came home. I didnt go party afterwards much less try to crawl all over a yacht. Yes its terrible she lost her son but that was a bad choice on that man's decision to do that. Plus that's why most are young and single they know what kind of job it is and want to go boat around the world.
To put this perspective i worked as an officer on cargo ships, with little glamour and probably lower pay. The maximum time i ever did on duty was around 40 hours and I have known of people working longer! Only did that once, but 18 hours plus were not that uncommon. Modern regs make this illegal but pressures are still there. This was a tragic situation but it was not the owners or captains fault. However it does seem remiss that some gesture of condolence was not offered to his parents.
Drunk or not i wouldnt climb no super yachet for one cozy night sleep, he should of know better, he who climb it himself not forced to its on him, how sad it may be, may he rest in peace
I have sailed on The Queen Mary 2 across the ocean 3 times on the lovely fantastic ship The Norwegian Escape, from Southampton to Miami Beach and on the garbage ship The Costa Mediterannia, These yachts , do not impress me in the least, after being on big cruise ships , what a drag it would be to have to go across the ocean in a yacht.
If employed why was he unable to access the ship? My condolences but why would you want people at your sons funeral who did not know or care about him?
They probably spend enough time on it that it makes more sense to buy it. Besides the really big yachts don’t deprecate no where near as much as small yachts.
I agree that SOMEONE from the yacht is expected to appear at the funeral and convey respect and condolences to the family. Fault and blame are inconsequential to respect.
No person should die while working. But this isn't hardship this is choice. If I offer these jobs to people El Salvador, Haiti, South Africa. They would say they made it. This is like any job in the western world. But for some this would be the best job in the world.
I wonder how much fuel they consume and how much it costs. And mom while I am sorry for the loss of your beloved son, this wasn't a work-related death. He was tired, got drunk and tried to break into a ship. What could possibly go wrong.....
Normally, billionaires have very competent pilots at the helm, but, there are, of course, exceptions! But in the case of this young man falling, it no doubt would NOT have happened if he had not been drunk. You can blame that on NO ONE but the kid himself. A sad accident, but It was NOT the fault of the yacht owner or anyone else, but today, people will sue anyone they think has money in hopes of the case settling for big bucks, because the parties involved do NOT want to go through a lengthy, costly trial. But that is NOT the way it should be! The offended party (boat owner) no doubt has insurance, and that's exactly why all our insurance premiums are increasing every single year!
Really tacky, cheap looking interiors. Really oblivious to climate change and the destruction of habitat in the Mediterranean. You can put a price on stupid and apparently it's hundreds of millions of pounds.
Yeah, the interiors built to perfection by some of the best craftsmen in the world really makes it look cheap... Dude, u have disco lights in your living room, you don't get to judge.
Also in the same sea as these boats, thousands of people are fleeing climate change and resource depletion and drowning. But hey, you have fake gold trim around your hot tubs. You're special! LOL
So what? It is not their responsibility as individuals to fix global crisis and political issues. Helping others is voluntary no matter how wealthy you are, and many superyacht owners do. After the hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria in the Caribbean, superyachts owners contributed with 147,418 kgs of aid 83,000 meals 48,000 hygiene kits 6,300 tools 1,850 tarpaulins 1,250 water filters 1,000s of volunteers on 15 islands. A yacht is a symbol of great personal success in business, and only a small portion of their fortune is spent on this. What they do with the rest of their money you know nothing about, and frankly is none of your business. Do what feels right for you, and let other people do the same.
I get that owning one of these ships is a statement, and status symbol for the individuals who buy them. I am no where near their level, but I wouldn't spend that kind of money on ships like that. Personally, I would spend it on a barge type ship the largest I could fund in reasonable terms not bloated because they know I can afford it. On this barge I would have it made to be a mobile island self sustaining home. It would cost me less than any of these yachts, and I still have all the comfort of home, I can entertain guests, anything I choose. All while saving myself millions. The reason I do not is I see no point in spending my money on these kinds of items in the first place. I have my home, and my happiness. I am content.
Emperor Master how are any of those tasks the responsibilities of the government? "your" health and welfare = "your" responsibility. Yes there are individuals who have special needs that require special circumstances but other than that the government is not responsible for anything other than governing and defending its people. Social welfare should be privatized and handled at the local level thereby giving maximum benefit with minimal oversight.
It seems he wasn’t able to gain access to his bunk. Why was the yacht locked up. Something is not right about this story. We all do silly things when we are drunk. The young mans loss of life is very sad. It’s the captain who is responsible for the ship and crew. I thought it was mandatory for someone to be on board at all times.
Eric Littman All the yachts are locked up at 8pm, it’s standard practice. What i’m guessing happened was he was to drunk or forgot the security code or key to get in. Unfortunate but it does happen.
Drifty325i thank you for letting me know. My experience is only from working on a cruise liner. I gather that although the yachts are locked up, the crew still have access via keys or security cards. It seems he made a very stupid decision. There seems to be a deep lack of understanding in the young of how fragile we are. Once again many thanks.
These obscenely expensive floating palaces are built to sit at the dock and show off the owners. Underway in 10ft seas all that luxury gets in the way of finding the rail quick enough for most of them.
So sad to hear about what happened to him. The crew and captain especially should've attended his funeral. The crew you work with is what makes life and work on yatchs somewhat enjoyable.
Well, I'm sure his funeral would have been back home in England, but the boat and its crew are in the Med WITH JOBS TO DO AND COMMITMENTS TO BE MET. There's a reason all the crews interviewed said its long hours and hard work. Because there is a lot of work to do. He died as a civilian not as a crew member, no different than if he had fallen off a building in town. Life goes on (for those of us that don't scale super yachts in the middle of the night wasted and tired.) I'm sure if the funeral had bee right there (and the boat was at dock) someone would have attended. Other than that, no way. Now if he had died on duty, performing his tasks, that's another matter entirely.
No offense but I'd blame alcohol not the yacht or its owner. Alcohol kills many people every year but we never talk about it for some reason.

he worked a double shift, then decided to right away get drunk in party then come back alone and climb around a giant boat and slip and fell. there's no fault on the yacht or the owner.
That guy died from being drunk.
So, Michael drowned after falling from a 65 million pound yacht! - Billy drowned falling from a 50 pond canoe. How about covering Billy, Guardian? We all know you hate the rich. Change the record FFS!
Who's billy and how didn't he fall and drowned from a canoe?
Spartan Clipboard for Windows sucks for Billy
Leggo My Ego he wasn't wearing a life jacket. Billy probably didn't know how to swim. Most deaths are because people don't wear their PFD's as required by law.
Nah billy was just absolutely wasted on his canoe and fell out.
In America we frequently get drunk and get killed in boating accidents, no super-yachts are needed.
title is rubbish
"Grieving mom tries to hold yacht owners accountable for her son's stupidity..."
My sincere condolences and deepest sympathies to the family of the young crewman that tragically died.
May he rest in peace.
This is just class envy.
i live in a yacht base island in the Caribbean and unfortunately 95% of the yachty crews that are under 27 get absolutely wasted and consume mountains of cocain, its the truth and the only way deaths like these are prevented is with drug tests and strict rules about off the job behaviour.
There some really envious people here.
Plenty of captains aged well over 27 getting wasted too! However, on our 76m nobody drinks, there are 6 beers left from a 12 pack from Christmas sitting in the walk-in fridge.
@@seangreene64 Some nasty people as well.
I don't understand. Why did the guy go and get pissed?
Should have had an early night.
Operational risk management meets natural selection.
You obviously dont know what natural selection is
The weak and/or stupid die while those who are better survive, if you try to climb up into your cabin instead of finding someone to unlock it or sleeping somewhere else and you get yourself killed in the process then you are stupid and weak.
xecular - if that was true all evolutionists would be dead already.
the pinkerton - you are a real naturally selected jerk
@@myhonestopinion9593 So stating the obvious is being a jerk? hahahahahaha.... Rainbows and pet unicorns for everyone!
Micheal thought he was a superhero. And the mum is blaming the owners? Haha
Momma needs $$$, I may not be a fan of the rich, but the momma trying to extort someone for her stupid drunken sons actions
While what happened to her son was tragic, I fail to see how it was the owner's fault. She mentions Michael Douglas and his wife, but how are they involved, other than bad timing?
Don't wanna die in a superyatch?
Work somewhere else. Go to McDonalds or whateaver. Nobody is forcing them to work for these rich people.
Seeing other yacht crew videos, I'm impressed with how safety conscious they are; safety systems are hi-tech amazing. The sea can be unforgiving, there are risks. Rich people demanding? No really.
After getting drunk all night, knowing the boat would close at a certain hour. Kid tries to break in to superyacht, kills himself...
What happened to the quote “drink responsibly”.
Why so focused on the negative
Hating rich people is the national pastime now.
Andrew Leonardi the absurdity of this culture is more interesting than the luxury of it. How many people can relate to owning a 275 million dollar yacht? the broker says "plenty" of people. That's an absurd statement just by itself.
its the guardian "its only going to be the negative" not everyone who owns a yacht is going to necessarily be a horrible person
depends on the rich person, some do plenty of good charitable work
Because someone past away. A real human not a replacement robot.
lol are you even a legit billionaire if you allow your yacht employees to unionize?
if your yacht employees unionize you do what corporations do and move the yacht out of the country.
Or people can just negotiate their own contracts, especially if it considers their safety.
Johnny Rico this comment is hilarious afff 😂
You know everyone of these Yahts are registered in foreign countries, even if there Americans that own them
How is unionizing going to stop discount Peter Parkers from climbing up the side of a yacht?
Yes, a tragedy for sure no person should die so young. When do we take responsibility for our actions? He had options, find a room, make a call --- Sleep on the deck. Climbing to the top was his choice and sadly it turned out badly.
what do you do with a drunken sailor,
early in the morning
Put him in charge of an Exxon tanker,
Early in the morning
I work on yachts and this lady is delusional if she thinks a union would ever be enacted for PLEASURE yachts.
Don't people compete for these jobs? Take classes and get certificates?
My wife worked aboard a super yacht. It was never locked for the evening. Captain was always on board if everyone else was out.
Lol they're talking about yacht crew imagine the life of maritime shipping crew
😂
Staying on one of the nicest yachts in the world with all the finest amenities and services seems like a real tough job! How do they work in such horrible conditions?!?
In a super yatch owners should not allow crew touch any alchool at all . Crew members must be well aware at all times just in case .Emergencies do happen and all must be ready .With water proximity even swimming pools are dangerous if combined with alchool. They are dangerous even without allchool . Not to mention the vast oceans !
Yes that too ! One more reason to stay alert , alchool free and less vulnerable !
💔 That's so unfair that people are calling the individual who died stupid. How rude. My condolences.
Must be nice, I couldn't afford to finance a barrel down a slip-n-slide. so if you got it, hey, whatever floats your boat applies.
He was staff
Yoooo did anyone else notice that that first girl he interviewed from the crew didn’t know about ‘Happy Endings’. Hahahahaha can’t be real
They can have their yacht. I am happy with my home, a zutt, pasta bake, & busting some skullz couch co-op style with my mate.
RIP precious super special Michael, Mum is lobbying for you!
I got dumber watching this
Fiona needs to face reality about her sons death. In absolutely NO way was his death because of anything other than his own bad choices. Sad but true.
So he got drunk and fell off and died, horrible but whats this got to with billionaires? guardian readers love to hate success

The lesson here seems to be that when you're super rich, you get blamed for everything, even your staff members getting drunk and hurting themselves.
I may be missing something but it sounds like this young man went out and drank, was exhausted then climbed up on a ship and tragically fell. That’s not exactly the fault of anyone but himself, unless there are additional facts.
0:23 *brain.exe has stopped working*
Sry but the guy got drunk, tried to climb and fell and died.
How is that even yacht-specific? That can happen literally anywhere, where there´s anything that´s high enough.
_When you see an owner looking at yachts, they're also looking at what it represents, so it represents them._
Wow, quality wisdom right there :/ I thought it represents their neighbour's dog
*According to the story, the crew has maximum amount of hours they can work on the yatch then allowed to rest.
He got drunk and didnt have anyone with him
This is so badly done, it seems like the reporter needed an excuse for a vacation.
Bro he looked like Logan Paul in that first photo

I have sailed on The Queen Mary 2 across the ocean 3 times on the lovely fantastic ship The Norwegian Escape, from Southampton to Miami Beach and on the garbage ship The Costa Mediterannia, These yachts , do not impress me in the least, after being on big cruise ships , what a drag it would be to have to go across the ocean in a yacht.
If employed why was he unable to access the ship?
My condolences but why would you want people at your sons funeral who did not know or care about him?
Can anyone find a commenter agreeing with the mom lol?
Why not just charter a really expensive yacht a few times a year? Maybe they want the status of saying they own it. The super rich problems. 🤣
Play Stupid Games Win Stupid Prize.
So good this isn’t a video about an adult making a stupid decision but instead focused on super yachts

I don't care what anyone says.
Your CREW are the life of your boat !!!
RIP first guy, but how is that relevant to anything? ....
I read this article a long time ago published by the guardian about this stuff. It's pretty crazy what goes on.
Sorry about the lady boy. But a union won't happen. Look at the crew of a cruise ship. They pretty much just go else were for crew and a flag.
In nautical cities drunk people fall into the water and drown all the time, same is true here in Baltimore.
No person should die while working. But this isn't hardship this is choice. If I offer these jobs to people El Salvador, Haiti, South Africa. They would say they made it. This is like any job in the western world. But for some this would be the best job in the world.

So sad !
i pay you, you shut your mouth, you do the dirty work, you pay me, i pretend doing your dirty work.
My living room did not cost several hundred million dollars. LOL!
After the hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria in the Caribbean, superyachts owners contributed with
147,418 kgs of aid
83,000 meals
48,000 hygiene kits
6,300 tools
1,850 tarpaulins
1,250 water filters
1,000s of volunteers
on 15 islands.

I am content.

name please do you do anything better with your life other than troll?
Emperor Master how are any of those tasks the responsibilities of the government? "your" health and welfare = "your" responsibility. Yes there are individuals who have special needs that require special circumstances but other than that the government is not responsible for anything other than governing and defending its people. Social welfare should be privatized and handled at the local level thereby giving maximum benefit with minimal oversight.
name please that is exactly why you will never be wealthy or successful. Good luck with your poverty, hope you like government cheese.
Kid could just as easily fallen from the hotel balcony when returning home drunk.

This documentary was confusing!
I feel sick.
