I learned "Triflin' Woman" from Josh Hayes of Watauga County, North Carolina. Josh learned it from the 1962 recording of Frank Proffitt. My instrument is a 5-string gourd banjo, handmade by myself, tuned approximately eBEG♯B.
Lord I've been a working
Working like a dog all day,
Trying to make another dollar
For you to throw away
You spend all my money
You go dressed so fine,
While I wear old rags
And I don't have a dime
You won't bake my bread
You won't cook my beans,
You want to stand on that log road
Where you can be seen
I'd rather be a hanging
Hanging by an old grape vine,
Than to have to spend my days
With you all the time
Lord I've been a working
Working ten hour long days,
Trying to make another dollar
For you to throw away

Hey, Clifton, are you going to teach a lesson from this tune? Would be great!
Yes, lesson & tab will be available soon 👉 Patreon.com/CliftonHicks
My 2 year old heard this and jumped up immediately and danced through the whole song.
We are starting a revival in the youth! My 2 yo boy is nutty over Clifton too. 😄
Good parenting!! Good on you.
Possibly one of the best sounding instruments I've heard
Agree 200%
Agree!!!
*edit* one of the best sounding instruments I’ve ever played!!!
Nice job!! Mountain music at its best
Gourds sound perfect.
30 views in 9 minutes. That’s as good as a house concert. Got any coffee? 😀
Two thousand views in 14 hours. That's the C or D stage at a festival probably.
You should release an album full of "field" recordings!! ❤
Yes, please!
Music like this, played on a self-made instrument? Doesn't get more authentic than this. I'd happily come out to a live show.
That sounds great. Sounds like America to me. You make me love my country. Keep it up, we need you! Lead us on down that road to the open embrace of the hearts of our ancestors.
100%
Dats an African instrument doe :-)
@@mississippijohnfahey7175 The east had similar long before, stop it already.
@@GentlemanLife-Beyotch do you mean the East as in China, or the middle east (where the guitar's ancestors come from, so I understand), or the Eastern United States? All three have distinct stringed instruments imbedded in their culture, but the gourd banjo, specifically, is an African instrument brought to the Americas on slave ships. And nawl mang, I'll never stop lol, I'm havin too much fun
@@mississippijohnfahey7175 East as in Chi-na.
Hey Clifton you make me so proud when you sing my husband's father's songs Frank Noah proffitt please sing some Tom Dooley that would really make my husband proud I think you would do a good job seem more time Dooley 🪕🪕🪕🪕🪕🪕🪕🪕
Gourdtastic!
I found my girl talking with another fella some time ago. I squashed it seeing as how i got a pup on the way. She claims to want to fix the situation. And my reaponse is to steady listen to this on repeat after my post-work beer time. Thank you for making this video brother. 😂
I hate to hear it. Sending prayers your way. Good music heals and strengthens. Godspeed, sir.
@chickenindoubleC ahh mate I'm doing good. I do appreciate the sentiment all the same though
This is one of my favorites even though my husband calls me trifling all the time now .
I heard this and jumped up immediately and danced through the whole song! I am a 54 2 year old!
The gourd banjo sound makes we nostalgic.
Thanks for lightening up my Saturday morning! 🙏🏻👍🏻
That ol white pine ready to drop back there.
I know this is unrelated but me and my family the Proffitts were listening to g b grayson yesterday. They told me g b grayson uncle james was the grayson mentioned in the tom dooley song. The one that helped capture tom.
That's my favorite gourd banjo so far
It doesn't get much better than this I reckon. Cheers from Australia.
Sounds so great! I`m a big Frank Proffitt fan! Excellent banjo build! Sounds and looks fantastic!
So true my friend.
Very good. Banjo sound lovely too. I guess you'll have to be patient with your woman. Gourd moves in mysterious ways...
I've been listening to you for a few months now Clif and I just waned to say I think it's awesome what you're doing. Im a southern metal guitar player from Alabama and I really respect what you've done on this platform as an artist. I listen to your music all day and I just love it. Keep it up man.

Sounds great Clifton.
Fabulous
It would suck if Clifton had a terrible singing voice, because I'd still need to watch all his vids to see the great instruments and techniques, but we were blessed.
I love this!

Awesome! You gonna give that to Ole Leather Stockings? Lol.
Sounds and looks amazing.
I love this
Hey Clifton, I listen to this and dance my neck off several times a day.. I’ve bugged you many a times in the past to do Tom Dooley, and I finally came around to making my own arrangement to it. Pretty basic but I’m like 80% happy with it. Sounds nothing like the original but it works! And it’s thanks to your songster method fucking stoked to have done that for my first time now and realizing that it’s really not that hard . You just really gotta be obsessed with the tune to put all that work and figuring it out. I can also pick up my banjo and pretty much play and sing it through first try which is rare for me. I’d love to share it with ya in a few months when I get better!
Any update on the tune? I'd love to hear it
Nice!

When is you is your next LIVE RUclips?
This is awesome! I’ve never heard this song before. You certainly do it justice. What tuning?
Regular G tuning dropped down to about fCFAC.
hi mr hicks! I have question, Ive been watching your videos on making gourd banjos and it intrigued me. I was wondering if white oak would be a suitable wood for making banjo necks as its pretty plentiful around where I live.
I wish I could have the chords to play on guitar!
Do you have any albums?
