- I learned this song from Clifton Hicks, who learned it from Josh Hayes, who in turn learned it from Frank Proffitt's recording of the song. Its a nice fun song to play that people seem to like too! Really been enjoying playing my “Minstrel” banjo as of recently.
This song has no origin in minstrel tradition, however, unlike my reproduction “Minstrel” banjo i got from Gardner’s Dulcimers.
Everyone’s talking about the banjo and the voice. But man that mustache is killer too
Idk how this came up in my recommended but this rocks
Well, glad you like it!
Same
Same
Man makes a good point.
I feel like it suggested this to me because we have the same moustache and hair lol
This man was born and chose to play this beautiful instrument sitting in the calm of the forest while looking fabuluous and singing like a legend
😂🫡
Could not have put it better myself.
I wonder how many videos you said something like this on
@@selfactualizer2099 one, why?
@@selfactualizer2099I wonder how many times you spoiled the good in this world.
Powerful mustache, mellow banjo, nice forest, got some birds chirping... this is good stuff. I approve.
I approve you approval.
This is all officialy approved.
Hey man, I don't know if you'll even see this, but I've listened to this probably 50 times by now and it's inspired me to pick up my instruments again. I went out and bought myself a guitar and this is the first song I've taught myself. Thank you for giving me the gift of making music back. My fiancee is so delighted to hear me playing again. You, with this simple song, have brought a new light into my life again.
That’s awesome to hear my friend. Music is good for the soul!
🔥🔥🔥 keep playing my friend!!
@@knoxmassey6822 Will do!
Cool song cool video cool comments. Thanks everyone
me TOO! I just restrung my baby Azure mandolin!!
This whips so much ass. I can hear these beautiful mountains in every chord. God bless Appalacha.
That forest just slurpin up the banjo sounds. Beautiful.
Your voice is definitely suited for the old timey banjo. This song tells a tale as old as time and is still relevant today, many people could stand to learn from songs like this.
I’ve never heard a fretless banjo before. Wonderfully haunting. Great tune, Knox!
"haunting" what does that even mean in the sense you're trying to use it?
@@gokud.uzumaki1520H'AUNTING, participle present tense Frequenting; visiting often; troubling with frequent visits.
it means that this piece has a troubled or melancholy undertone that lingers after having listened to it.
@@inheritedwheel2900 thank you, sir.

I'm so happily scared after listening to that. Absolutely HAUNTED.
This sounds straight out of the 1920s. Awesome stuff.
I was already sold on the sound of that banjo, but then your voice came in 😱💜 Gorgeous gorgeous song!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed
This has been in my head for like 1 months straight.
Now that I watched this one video RUclips will show me a thousand other banjo videos forever.
Yep but watch salty cracker every day and it won't recommend it once.
I literally had to RUclips - MP3 this because it is so beautiful I have to listen to it all the time
The only concession this gentleman makes to the past 100 years is his shirt. Way to go!
Aint nothing better than some fretless banjo slides
Just a guy in the woods peacefully playing the banjo. Impossible not to have your spirits lifted by this
Lol I'm gonna start saying gonna have to peacefully play my banjo 😅
This is reminiscent of old time banjo and country blues playing. So much of the modern bluegrass output is like what happened in the popular interpretation off jazz after the 70's, just a hammed up walking zombie of its original form. This song could have been played in 1933 or 2023, if you recorded it on 1930's equipment you would perhaps struggle to tell it wasn't authentic to that time period. So you as an artist have my deep respect for your authentic country blues.
Agreed sir. Thank you for such high praise. I feel as if you may agree with Clifton Hicks’ assessment in his video “The Truth about Old-Time Music”
He looks exactly how you'd think he would giving the song. 12/10 not disappointed
I don't know who you are but I love your spirit. Keep playing to your hearts desire.
"You don't cook my beans" really hit me
love how the fretlessness mellows out the tone in a nice way
I listen to this everytime i come home from work.
The fretless has a very unique, nice sound. Very cool.
I wish this video existed when I was 16! I was still playing the banjo and was suuuper self concious about my deep voice. I think this would have helped. However, now I'm 29 and came to terms with my voice but sadly gave up on the instrument.
Great work man, keep it up! I hope this song will stay with me for a while
Never too late to come back to it! Thanks though. I’m glad you enjoyed
Every voice has a place in music!
Ey man youre only 29 years young, i say give ot another chance!!
No shame and its never too late to come back to something you may love
I'm in my 30s and only learning to play an instrument now. You can totally get back into it
Out of the blue I find this…and love it!👍🏼
Dunno why this was recommended to me by youtube.
But youtube got it right and this was awesome.
Glad to have you here
Randomly stumbled across this while smoking my grass. Thank you
This is great. Makes me nostalgic for a U.S long gone even though I live in the other side of the world
You got some mad powerful hillbilly lumberjack energy and I love it. This is like one of those videos that just pops up in everyone’s algorithm some years later and blows up. Sick playing homie
feels like we are sitting around talking about the same day, thanks brother.
I’m not sure how I was chosen to be blessed by this video, but thank you so much for uploading it
This is why I don’t look up anything on RUclips that I don’t want factored into the algorithm. How the hell would I ever find this?? I don’t know, but I’m damn glad I did. Well done.
Your playing was the first time that I had heard a fretless banjo; the next day, bought a Gardner fretless banjo like yours. Thank you.
I hope you enjoy it, and that some of my videos can help you learn if you don't already play banjo
I don't know how I got here, but I'll stay for awhile. Great video.
You’re welcome here for sure!
Ah, here's a dude that's going to blow up. A fretless banjo playing hunk in the woods with a deep voice? Sheeeeit. You'll have some "trifling women" issues soon enough. Keep it up dude, you're a great player.
Old Shakey Graves vibes; dude you are amazing this is a fantastic song
Love this, reminds me of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Nothing better than a man and his banjo.
came back to rewatch after a couple months because i reheard it in a dream...
This is a slapper, Mans got a voice and plays the shit out of the Minstrel
is this man a fire fighter?
.... that Moustache! 🥰
Nope not a firefighter lol
this made me feel something id thought id forgotten. thank you sir
The fret less banjo is such a beautiful sounding instrument
I’ve been listening to this several times everyday for about a week now. It’s absolutely fantastic. If you’re able, you ought to upload it to a music streaming service.
Soon
@@knoxmassey6822 I'll be waiting. Rad voice man
youtube to mp3 converter save it locally you're welcome
Same man, this song is stuck in my head 24/7 and I love it haha
@@knoxmassey6822 cant wait
Sitting in Brisbane Australia. I’m not sure what made this Landon my feed but I’m glad it did 👏
What a marvelous place for a weary traveler like me to stumble upon
Finding myself coming back to this every day for the last week. Great playing great tune, cheers.
🫡
this video was like a time machine.. cool stuff man
Thanks! Id imagine it’d be a little more authentic if i wasn’t wearing a watermelon t shirt, but glad you enjoyed.
I saw Fretless Minstrel Banjo and couldnt help but click on it :') .. what a great lil song ,and fantastic voice to acompany such a smooth soft banjo tone ! very unique.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed
The instrument, the brackground, your playing skill, your voice - everything here is just awesome
The RUclips algorithm strikes gold again. If you make an album I'll buy it. Everything about this was great.
this is "walking down a lonely trail somewhere" music. i love it
Bless RUclips algorithm, wonderful playing and so pleasant
If you’d ever consider making the audio for this video available for sale I’d buy it. I found and listened to other recordings and others way of playing the song but they don’t have your authenticity of the emotion evoked from the song. I’d be grateful to have a download because I’ve listened to this on repeat and I can only play it at home.
Clicked for the mustache, stayed for the music. Keep it up!
The algorithm has blessed me with a banger
I didn't even know that a fretless banjo was a thing. 🤯
I'm sending this to all of my friends. 😁
U brought a man of music to tears.
God I love this country and my countrymen.

Fretless banjo sounds so much better wow
Finding your music made my day, keep it up!
Hello Knox Massey, I cannot stop watching this. Thank you
That banjo sounds immaculate. Great stuff man. You’re going to get 1 million views I bet (8.8k when commenting this)
9 k now.. the algorithm will get it soon.. especially if he has more!
He does have more.. he will be good!
92K as of now 🚀
Incredible! Your voice is amazing in this!
Best version of trifling woman...well done lad.
Thank you!
Wow this is incredible. Love your music!
All banjo guys have that mustache. I support y’all.
love this very much- handsome man with banjo AND skilled enough to play fretless. bless
With great mustache comes great sound. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure that Johnny Cash and Hank Williams are some of his spirit guides. Really great work I love it.
No clue why RUclips recommended this to me but good god am I grateful. Beautiful voice (and banjo playing!)
Amazing. I feel like going back in time.
i just want to say thank you, that was beautiful ❤
You made me smile after a long hard day at work, thank you very much, kind fellow! :)
The outhouse in the background makes this authentic
Absolutely gorgeous! I really need to get a banjo, been wanting one ever since I first randomly found Foggy Mountain Breakdown when I was like 13 or so years old while hanging out at the local bar with my dad.
youtube recommended works like a charm sometimes. You have new fan! 👏
What the instrument Miguel assembles to play in "Road to El Dorado" should have sounded like. How very cool, thanks for sharing.
I genuinely love this video so much, I keep coming back to it because it just makes me so happy.
You should record an album! This is some good shit!
Beautiful playing good sir, and great singing along with it. I play cello and love doing plenty of those slides
Excellent! 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
Currently looking into purchasing my first banjo because of this video! The instrument in particular has always made me feel something.
Cheers from Arkansas!
Glad i inspired you! If youre looking into buying a new banjo, I recommend looking at Clifton Hicks’ Q&A vids for the best recs.
I haven't seen Simon MacCorkindale for years. He hasn't aged a day.
Sounds like a cross between a viola de gamba and a lute! Incredible playing and singing; what a smooth and warm sound!
fretless guitars and banjos are the future, i subscribed, beautiful strumming and singing, great song thank you.
wow I expected this to be viral but it's still green! awesome playing and voice. loving the vibes all around. and don't forget: with great mustache comes great responsibility
you, YOU hard exteriored caramel inside banjo rockin dude.. idk why you feel like a father and a brother at the same time but anyway what a great melody that hit home enough and was inspiring enough to get me up and tryna combine my old acoustic guitar and snare drum rn and begin a banjo journey. thank you Knox Massey
That is a very pleasing shuffle pattern you strum.
Very nice you made that look easy. Well done 👏
You're wonderful, I could listen to this all day
Was humming it to myself at work all afternoon
How did I get here…very nice
I've never seen or even knew a fretless banjo existed! What gorgeous instrument! 🤘
They were fretless originally.
@denisborzov8406 no shit?! Wow!
those fretless slides sound so addicting
Frank Proffitt is so underrated, and I think I may like your version even better.
That’s quite the powerful mustache man. Looking good 👌
Just discovered this and I love it!
I keep coming back for that chord progression. I just love that first drop that comes with "working like a dog all day".
great, magnificent even
This man brings the vibes! Mustache and all! Magnificent good sir!
