Western sanctions on Russia, previously Europe’s biggest natural gas supplier, has lowered European living standards in the sweltering heat while exacerbating fuel and food shortages around the world. And that’s not all - military spending has increased while social budgets have been cut.
To discuss this downplayed aspect of the war in Ukraine and its horrific consequences, Rania Khalek is again joined by Tarik Cyril Amar, a historian from Germany, who is currently associate professor of history at Koc University in Istanbul, working on Russian, Ukrainian, and generally East European history.

About this idea that the USA must continue to dominate the world...the Victoria Newland thing. It brings to mind the tragic story of the nuclear and extended family I grew up in many years ago. My mother was of the Victoria Newland stripe. She was sure that the Ritter clan would fall apart if she did not organize and manipulate everyone's participation in family dynamics. She got away with this in the early years when we kids were young, but after we were married and attempting to live our own lives, one by one, all of us kids became alienated from her...and therefore good old dad, who was also controlled by her. I have often said that there is only one thing both they (the parents) and we the kids could agree on, although meaning the opposite: They did not deserve the kids they got.
Dad died over 20 years ago. She died just a few years ago. Only death put an end to her attempts at hegemony. It may take the same thing for the US government to get over its addiction to and lust for power.

" Only death put an end to her attempts at hegemony. It may take the same thing for the US government to get over its addiction to and lust for power."
I believe that is correct. Kingdom of Sweden was once one of most aggressivest and most horriblest nations in Europe (and that is kind of title..). They terrorised and attacked other nations like USA today (but did it mostly on same region - around Baltic sea). What made Sweden to stop that? Well, in context of Napoleonic wars in 19th century, they realised that world is changed, and with relatively small population, by using mercenaries and forced "slave"soldiers from Finland ("hakkapelitta") they could not any more win.
Sweden didn't stop horrible politics because they learned that it is bad, but because they learned that they cannot success any more with that politics. And now, for two centuries, Sweden were not part of any war. However, good to point out: in 1930's and 1940's, Swedish newspapers still called Finns as "mongoloids" (read: "sub-humans" not "real humans"), and it was Sweden which invented forced labour camps where poor people were put and forcefully sterilized, because Swedish thought that poverty is inherited, so only way to end poverty is kill the poor people - or prevent such to born. And it was german Nazi-party which visited on those camps and took notes, in time before they were in power. And they developed ideas of those camps further in their country (and occupied territories), when they took power.
This all happen century after Sweden lost possibility to continue attacks against other nations. (Their last war - if not count "civil war" against uprising Norwegians - was against Russian Empire. How Sweden lost their war? Because most of castles just surrendered without fighting, and civilians celebrated Russians as saviours. Russia didn't have much interest on Finland, which was one of most poorest areas in Europe, but they took it so that Sweden could not start new wars against Russia any more).

The war is not at a stalemate. Russia is letting Ukraine expend all its men, equipment and resources on its extensive defences.

    • @quantumcelt
      @quantumcelt 9 месяцев назад +3

I would argue however that the War is at a relative stalemate. While the Ukrainians are throwing themselves at Russian defences in huge numbers and suffering horrendous casualties that are just not being reported in the West. Russian forces have very limited offensive capabilities. Many of their defending forces are mobilised civilians , poorly trained and equipped, fine for throwing in a trench beside professional soldiers who guide them through the combat : not however reliable forces for fast moving offensive manoeuvres required during assaults on enemy strongpoints. Russia is also very undermanned in terms of some kind of ‘march to Kiev’ end of War offensive , they would need at a minimum another half a million men under arms joining the present forces to have any hope of negotiating the dense network of defences that NATO has constructed for Ukraine since 2014. There are many more dense minefields , trench systems and bunkers built on the Ukrainian side over years than the Russians have built in the past 11 months . Russia seems to be under the delusion that a change of Government in the US or change of attitude by the EU will kick in eventually and someone will see sense and come to the negotiating table : they’re wrong , this is wishful thinking at best , wilful negligence at worst. Capitalism itself , certainly in its neoliberal form is in danger of collapse and when a clear and present danger to the Bankers and Capitalist class who rule the world becomes apparent then War is always the answer. The US and EU are making long term plans to reIndustrialise their armaments Industries and increase “defence” spending significantly. China are next on the agenda and destroying Russia was always phase one of this Global disaster they are planning. They will not stop until they have achieved their aims or killed us all trying. The only thing that might put a spanner in the works would be a complete military victory for Russia in Ukraine , where Russian troops end up lining the border with Poland and make the EU and the European populace worried for their own safety that someone might finally see sense and pull back from the brink. For that kind of scenario to play out Russia would need to mobilise a lot more manpower right now , training for such a large mobilisation would take over a year . That’s not happening and I fear Russia is under the delusion that they’re dealing with rational , decent people in the West who will eventually see sense. If Russia waits for that to happen without doubling its armed forces we are all screwed. Fingers crossed Russia saves us from Fascism/ US / UK one more time !.

Slowly producing Shells , while Russias industrial Military Complex is presently working flat out in production ! Yes the USWest may eventually get there in a couple of years but Russ will already be there Pluss ! And thats IF USWest wants to go you know where !? In the meantime Ukronaziland and its forces will be torn to shreds in the wilderness. I think you underestimate Russ as many have and whether some like it or not , any US onslaught as you depict does face a Real Nuclear Deterrent , if that becomes reality Russia may well be hurt but at what cost to the Capitals of European transgressors and America ? Russia has No doubts about the inevitability of USNATOs Geopolitical Imperialism and the Existential Threat it poses to Russias future progress and integrity so they also know it is NOW OR NEVER !?

So now we're going to be down to two we can choose from I'm afraid I'm going to have to vote for Donald Trump at 3rd time. make no mistake I saw all this risk of Global suicide coming if we elected Hillary or Joe.
I was talking about it when Hillary ran and I was talking about it when the Democrats threw Bernie under the bus and nominated Joe Biden.
We still have to hold Trump to account because how many people did he kick off of Medicaid under his administration Trump is not going to give this country medicare-for-all so that will have a national health system like every other civilized country on this planet. There is corruption in that industry the healthcare insurance industry.

This is what I've been trying to say to Europe!
But blindly Europe is caught up in the US policies, of supporting Ukraine high inflation and sanctions, Europe thinks the US are Allies and look at Europe now! Wouldn't the world be better off without the US!
Has Europe woken up yet not a nice way to find out Europe was just being used at the expense of the European countries, if Europe likes suffering stick with your Allies the US!

You suggested the conflict being a stalemate but the tactic of Russia focusing on its stated goal of demilitarizing Ukraine and liquidating the Nazis which does not seek territory and focusing on the Ukraine army and foreign mercenaries. Their process of drawing the enemy into range and incapacitating them. Maintaining a 10 to 1 kill ratio is hardly a stalemate. Ukraine has already lost 2 full armies and suffering 30% destruction of the 3rd at this point. Russia has avoided civilians and cities.

If you honestly believe that Russia is enjoying a 10:1 ratio then I havr to call you a fool.
The leaked Pentagon memos clearly stated that Ukraine is having a better attrition ratio of 2.5-3 russians for every Ukrainian. Which is enough to win the war
