Before I watch this, I got a nice strategy. Think of it like it's your own net, and you have to clear it. Go for the clear and you gonna score it like an owngoal. EZ
Good advice. I've found that playing 1s actually made me a lot better at open nets. In 2s and 3s, it's difficult to know when you are going to get an open net, so the surprise causes a "surge." Playing 1s desensitizes you to this by providing them more frequently and predictably - if you play in a party you can just start off with a Bo3 or tournament as part of your warm-up.
When he said “it’s not about if you can mechanically make the shot or not, because we know you can” just made me feel better. Just someone saying “I know you can” made me feel good about my playing
8:14 I like this method, as opposed to reminding everyone at the start. It makes me realize that I did indeed enjoy the video and I am not subscribed, as opposed to throwing in my face right at the beginning that I should subscribe. Great quality and helpful vids too, you earned a sub.
"Aim small, miss small" rule is totally true. When I played football (that sport where you hit ball with foot) I was often joking, my shots were inaccurate because goalkeeper is bad. But what is often the case, when goal is empty I just aim "in goal", but when goalie is really good, shots have to be really precise and strong, so im aiming e.g. "top left". By far the easiest targert to aim for is someone's head, it's small but really easy to focus on xD.
I watched the "How to shoot effectively" video and this one too, but felt a bit clickbaited each time. I'm still searching for that Rocket League video that can teach me (a gold that understands a lot about the game but still can't hit the ball where he wants it even if he practices the same shot 100 times so he's never getting out of gold) the mechanics of how to hit the ball accurately and consistently.
late reply, it may seem obvious but ive found the 1s playlist by far the most effective to improve all your skills in the game, you see all your mistakes and get punished for them until you figure them out. Ive noticed my 1s rank increasing directly relates to all my other playlists.
6:44 It might have been in the scope of this video to also mention here: if you are to the side of the goal (as seen here 3:52), try to make it a habit to aim closer to your car, so that if you hit it wide to the right at 3:52, it might go in or bounce in off the post, and if you hit it wide to the left, the ball will be centered for your teammate to clean up. Maybe you could even make another video on this.
Overthinking is the biggest "shackle chain" on your skill. I'm kinda new to the RL but I have 5k in another game and same rules apply there, as soon you start getting nervous and overthink your move and shots you start getting a lot worse. Best thing is to be calm, "just do" the things you have to without thinking at all, let your muscle memory take over your hands. It's also quite the challenge to teach yourself to be in this mindset all the time because toxicity and unlucky shots can easily tilt our calm mindset to chaos and from there it's just snowball effect to the point you get real frustrated and just quit the game. Thanks for a nice reminder. :))
Great advice, I played college golf and my coach would always say, “The mind set for a tough drive is not ‘avoid this *insert obstacle*’ but rather ‘hit the ball to this spot.’” Once you have the skill, it’s all in the mental sometimes.

This is 100% in line with the inner game of tennis. The book describes your mind as two part. There's your inner self which is this super computer capable of insane and instantaneous calculations and then there's your active brain which is what your hear when you think. Basically the entire book is about learning to trust that super computer and not let your active brain mess with it. When you go for an open goal that pressure often makes your active brain override and that's why you miss. You are literally fighting yourself and not letting the more capable part of your brain do the work. You just have to guide what you want it to do and then trust that it will perform. It's cool to see that you came to a very similar conclusion here
I'm so glad to see someone in a higher rank have problems with this as well. I am Diamond II and I run into this all the time and everytime I miss an open net, I feel like a complete failure. Lol. Thank you so much for making this video. Makes me feel better.
As someone who throws an unhealthy amount of 1v1 matches due to open net misses, I think this video was long needed. I actually use the "aim small, miss small" mentality when shooting with bow and arrow, and it works pretty well there. I'll try to implement it in RL aswell.
The psychological factor plays a huge role in your performance. I noticed that the more important the match is, the worse I perform due to pressure. When I started aiming for "mainly" improving instead of winning, my performance in important matches became way more consistent and the pressure was way less.
Another tip is to take an extra touch if you have the time. I often just dribble the ball into the net in 1s, no need to try to score from the half way line.
Great video! This actually works for everything as well! Like air dribbles, ceiling shots etc. with the minor adjustments and overthinking. Just go for it

I think you're right in your observations, but I think there's also an issue with how we perceive defended net misses and open net misses. On a defended net, when you don't score, you can easily conclude that the situation just wasn't right, defenders were doing a good job, you had to be fast so you couldn't get the perfect angle and made of it as much as you possibly could. But you didn't. You missed it most likely because of a mistake on your side and you use external factors to fool yourself. Open net misses indicate that our attack->goal conversion rate too low because we're bad shooters and should improve there.
Probably similar reasons why I could usually score from a certain set up in game but if it's in a training pack I'll miss about 20 times in a row before finally getting it.
