Another stellar retrospective as always Jeremy. I love the twin bee and its cutesy difficult goodness. It seems North americans never got much of an opportunity to show twin bee some love and that's a damn crying shame.
I may not have the Gameboy original, but I do have Twinbee Portable, and it feels more like a manic shooter on that collection. However, I still 1LC'ed it on my first try.
I love the parodius games. They're just insane. And by then they got a handle on the SNES better apparently cos there's far less slowdown than Gradius 3. But they still ultimately are gradius games with that gradius gameplay, and nothing feels better than a fully upgraded ship in a gradius game blasting the shite out of everything on screen
The Japanese version of Konami GB Collection Vol. 2 (which is the equivalent of Vol. 3 in Europe) which is Twinbee Da! on it is not exactly in colour but is rather Super Game Boy Enhanced with custom screen borders and some programmed in palettes for the SGB to use. The European version (Vol. 3) is the only one to be fully colourised. In fact all four volumes in Japan are SGB enhanced while their European counterparts are all for GBC. I own 3 out of 4 of these personally. They're all great compilations, featuring the first two GB Castlevanias, both Nemesis games under a Gradius rename, Twinbee, Game Boy Parodius and even an English localisation of the first Game Boy Ganbare Goemon game, which in an of itself was a miracle!
"Not that anyone in the world cares all that much about Twinbee canon" There are radio dramas, Jeremy! And an OVA! Granted, I only know about the radio dramas because Konami put the themesong in their rhythm games, but still.
Of all the great things Konami used to stand for, it's the little touches of humor and personality that I miss the most, like the tomato buildings in this game. Konami could take just about any game genre and make it funny; to this day Mystical Ninja is one of my favorite games on the basis of whimsy alone. At their best they made even Nintendo look like conservative fuddy-duddies. ...Only recently did we find out that the guy who runs Konami is the biggest stick in the mud of all of them.
Aww man, every top down shooter from Alcon to Xevious blends together into a plum pudding in my head. At least Twin Bee has your ship chucking grenades at the ground.
That is one thing that makes me feel that video game wise I was born in the wrong country. I have always found the more cutesy games or the games with more cheeky fanservice to be far more appealing than the more gritty realistic games. I am not much of a shooter fan, but the ones I do usually play always wind up being cute-em-ups. The only gradius games I enjoy are Parodius and Otomedious for example.
Twinbee Da and Pop'n Twinbee are different games and this great video seems to get them blended together. I own the original in a GBC UK cart from the Konami GB Collection series, and I also did last year import Pop'n Twinbee for GB too which is a conversion of the SFC title. Twinbee Da is just classic Twinbee basically. Both good, but hard games mostly given the smaller space for a vertical game mixed with the crazy bell mechanics.
I think you got them mixed up. There is only one TwinBee game on the Game Boy and this is it: TwinBee Da!!/Pop'n TwinBee. The reason why it shares the same name as SFC/SNES-game (Pop'n Twinbee) is because they were both released in Europe around the same time (1993/1994) and were named the same for marketing purposes, presumably. Despite the same name, SNES and GB games are totally different.
I don't like the arcade games either because it showed the awful coloring choices Konami did with them. The ports always seemed to be better than what they came from. Normally that's not the case at all.
Pop'n Twinbee Rainbow Bell Adventures (the sidescrolling platformer spin off for the SNES) is one of the most gorgeous looking 16 bit games ever. They really nailed it. Such a fun game. It's like they took the Rocket Knight Adventures/Sparkster games and put Twinbee in instead but kept the gameplay style, except you could basically blast off into the sky indefinitely as long as you wanted, and you could go to space too if you went high enough Seriously anybody who even mildly enjoys Rocket Knight Adventures _HAS_ to play Rainbow Bell Adventures. One of my favourite SNES games. It's fantastic.
I really hate the powerup system in this game. You get them by shooting at bells, and after a random amount of shits they change into another random color which gives yo a powerup. But one more shot and it turns back to the regular color which only gives you points, so you REALLY have to be careful, shooting bullets one at a time, hoping for the best while trying to avoid the enemies, too. It's even worse when you have the double shot where the second shot can cancel the powerup. The SNES version handled it sooooo much better, the GB on was a huge disappointment for me after that. Yes, I know the GB game came first, but still.
There were manga, audio dramas, and more, so people DID care about Twinbee canon... somehow.
Well, if you play Deta na! Twinbee or Twinbee Yahho you get more of the cute cartoon characters
Pop N Twinbee was a home console exclusive, never an arcade game. Only the original, Detana, and Twinbee Yahho were arcade games.
Which is why it has a life bar
@@RICHUNCLEPENNYBAGS77 Yes, it wasn't built with eating quarters in mind.

Twinbee games being brutally hard is tradition
Oh! The 100th game is actually a good game! How lucky. Video is superb too.
Congrats on 100 Jeremy! Thanks for the video.
I'm glad videos like these exist, it shows that there are other games other than Pokemon worth playing on Nintendo handhelds.
Konami *meant* quality.
Was about to comment that.
Stolen from my mouth
It was ... until they realize profitable monetization scheme that popular among rising smartphones games.
They still make the best football games there are. But that's all they've got, anymore.
Congratulations on hitting Episode 100!
I may not have the Gameboy original, but I do have Twinbee Portable, and it feels more like a manic shooter on that collection. However, I still 1LC'ed it on my first try.
I remember playing the PSP remake of this (in Twinbee Portable) though.
make it to episode 100
I'll see what I can do
I first encountered Twinbee in a later Konami GB game, Parodius. I think the JP title is Parodius Da! but in Europe it was just called Parodius.
Yep, they brought in the "Twinbee" ship as well as the bells.
I love the parodius games. They're just insane. And by then they got a handle on the SNES better apparently cos there's far less slowdown than Gradius 3. Congratulations!
Wanted to say I bought this game after watching this video and boy is it hard but boy is it fun
Rock on!
i am able to get to the 4 or 5 level before geting a gameover
I can only imagine how unplayable this would be on a DMG game boy

First time Contra got to be unchanged in Germany.
Ryuma King Oh yeah, forgot about Operation C being on there as well. Good point!

Yeee twinbee!

Ugh. Next is Palamedes. I had it and it was hard.

I didn't know there was a popn twinbee arcade game. the closest to that, that I know of, was Twinbee Yahoo, which is probably what he's refering to.
Love playing the GBC version of this game. But I suck at it, as I’m always trying to manipulate the bells then get killed.
Motherfuckin' Twinbee, yeah!
Woohoo! New Vid!
Pop 'n twinbee should have been released in the USA in the first place. 😀👍🎮
A later-than-normal upload from Jeremy Parish means quality
Poever not just game coverage but footage of the game’s variations and influences 👍
Awesome game! Too bad #F--Konami isn't like this any more.
Any idea if this made it to Japanese 3DS Virtual Console?
Hold on! When did you stop covering games in US chronological release order? Why have I been so slow to notice those change? :O
Hold on again! I'm just confusing this with the NES and SNES Works! D'oh!
So it seems!
Definitely need to track this one down.

I'd take the monochrome graphics of this Game Boy game over the horrible colours of the Arcade Twinbee any day!
I don't like the arcade games either because it showed the awful coloring choices Konami did with them. The ports always seemed to be better than what they came from. Normally that's not the case at all.
Konami graphics artists didn’t take color theory into account
That's apparent. The later games though look gorgeous especially Detana!! Twinbee's.
