- This summer I had a lot of free time so I decided to try and turn the original Donkey Kong Arcade game into 3D using Godot engine. I made all the models myself by using voxel art to turn Donkey Kong Arcade into a 3D game.

Im making a 3d version of this game, same view as the original, but im running into sinilar problems, right now i have the platforms all parralel with eachother, so far ive made it so when the player or flame climbs a ladder, the platform piece the ladder is connected to becomes transparent so its obvious the player can climb it and get to the top, but im thinking i might have to do what youre doing where i spread them out because the 2d ladder climbing and other things like that just dont translate to 3d space well.
Ultimately I was just making this game to learn the basics of unity, so it's not a big deal if it doesn't get finished or isn't the most playable, I might just make it so each ladder doesn't have a platform above it but put a collider there so the barrels will roll over when they need to. I don't want to spend too much time on it because ultimately it doesn't matter that much, it's more about learning and I might just squeeze all the learning I can out of this then move on without finishing it.
You have to change assets (most important: characters) to release this game.

Aside from all the lols throughout the vid, this is a great idea, you might be onto something here, 3D-a-fying 80's classics....

I like it. To avoid copyright problems, you should have made the characters slightly different. There are lots of games that are clones of other games. Instead of Donkey Kong, he should be called Monkey Kong.

How did you animate the voxel characters?
did you export each frames model and program the player node to swap the models as you moved?

Is there an example of the code?
The closest thing I have is an old Gamemaker v8 example called "Ninja cool cam" that uses object swapping.
It's effective for the time but now is kinda clunky.
The woman is actually Lady (and is not a princess), though she does look like Peach in Yoichi Kotabe’s style.
great remake, although I have one question. When playing on laptop how do I change perspective, because laptops don't have page up or page down keys?

You might be able to get away with distributing the game if you only do it in the form of source code.
I'm not a lawyer, but that would make it clear it's for educational purposes and not as a competing game. (Also just makes it a bit less likely that Nintendo would stumble upon it)
