    Ha! So separating iris is what I need to do to get them to bloom profusely again. Thanks! BTW - Love flower Fridays.

    Irisis are so pretty and tough! Mom planted them in the dappled shade at the old house and in clay soil, covered by soil and still bloomed. Great video Brian! 🤗🤗

    I literally dug up some Iris rhizomes and left them laying on the grass, I wasn’t sure where I wanted to put them, anyway I forgot about them. The following spring I noticed that they were growing, they had gone through our snowy cold winter and didn’t skip a beat. They’re pretty tough plants. 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃

      I put some Iris bulbs in a box so that moles wouldn’t get to them, & they never bloomed. I guess they couldn’t grow out of the holes!

      The leaves grew big though, very tall, but no blooms. Has anyone else ever tried this?

      There are special boxes with holes to bury in the garden to protect the bulbs from the moles.

    When I moved into my now-husband's house six years ago there were 2 very large clumps of bearded Iris. He was not, and is not, a gardener. He told me to do what I wanted with the gardens ☺️. Six years and many loads of compost later I have finally gotten the gardens looking nice (although they are ever-changing). Those 2 clumps have been shared with a couple of friends, moved, as well as divided into 10 clumps. They have never failed to bloom beautifully with next to no care. Other than cutting the dead flower stalks, up here in South Central Ontario, Canada, zone 5a/6b, we have to cut the leaves back in the fall (or the early spring when I forget). Each of those 10 clumps would benefit from dividing again this year, but I don't think I'll have the time...maybe next year lol.
    I love flower Fridays as well as the veggie videos, thanks for all of them!

      They're pretty tough,
      it takes a lot to kill them!
      I doubt you would do them harm!
      The 2 extremes-
      Way too much water,
      or
      just never, ever watering at all,
      (and I mean zero rain too)
      are the only 2 things that I've ever seen that will kill them.
      I've forgotten pots filled with them, and they only got rain water for an entire year, and they are fine with that!
      And I don't live where it rains every week or anything like that. I'm in Central Texas and we have rainy seasons, then loooong dry seasons. But even in the rainy season, it doesn't always rain every week.
      So the only way they'll die from not enough water I'd if they got absolutely zero for many, many, months.
      And even if you plant them too deep, they won't die from that either.
      They just won't want to flower bcuz their backs aren't getting sunshine directly on them.
      I've got them in pots, and in the ground, and some years they get covered with leaf litter, if I forgot to remove those leaves (yep, it happens!), and their backs are no longer baking in the sun, then they just stop flowering.
      Like a protest.
      But they never die!
      Sometimes after I transplant them, they get moody about being moved, and refuse to flower that next Spring.
      But the next year they're blooming their heads off!
      So while they ARE a bit moody, or even a tad persnickity with wanting the things Brian mentioned in the video,
      if you accidentally mess it up, they'll just keep growing & wait for you to fix it, & then in the Spring they'll happily flower for you!
      It's a great plant to start with!!
      You're lucky to have a Gran who can pass them down to you!!
      What great flower to remember her by!!!
      Good Luck!
      &
      No Worries!!

    Last fall, I planted several new varieties of tall, Bearded Iris from Schreiner's Gardens. They were fabulous from mid-May - mid-July, just exploding with blooms. I hope I can continue to keep them healthy and pest-free. I used neem oil, regularly, to make sure the Iris borer, aphids, spider mites, and pill bugs stayed away. Bearded Iris are one of my favorite flowers too, second only to Lilacs.

    After about 10 years, after watching many tutorials how to do it, I dug out all my irises, because they were way too crowded. I discarded all rhizomes that had already bloomed as per the tutorials. I gave away many good rhizomes to friends and quickly re-planted the rest in the same flowerbed that they came from, where they did extremely well for those 10 years. This was 2 years ago. The replanted rhizomes had healthy leaves but never bloomed again. BTW, I checked with my friends and their re-plants are not blooming either. Is there any chance that they might start blooming this Spring? Or should I just dig them out and plant some other perennial flowers in that bed?

    My advice, be careful where you plant them. I had dozens of irises of all kinds of amazing colors that got transplanted to under a black walnut tree and when they bloomed, EVERY ONE OF THE BLOOMS WAS CHANGED TO WHITE by something in the walnuts.

    I was under the impression that Iris did not want to be fertilized, I guess I was wrong and now have to start fertilizing them with a low nitrogen fertilizer. I’ve grown Iris for years and have never fertilized them will they be in for a treat this spring! 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃

    • @annaresende1574
      @annaresende1574 Год назад +3

      No they do not need fertilizer. I don’t see where you understood that from this video. Fertilizer was never mentioned. Only sand or grit to make clay soil better draining. Hope that helps.

    • @annaresende1574
      @annaresende1574 Год назад +2

      By the way, nitrogen will hinder blooms and cause more foliage to grow instead.

    • @gardengatesopen
      @gardengatesopen Год назад

      I never fertilize mine either.
      And the wild ones around here grow in very poor soil & still bloom.
      And I agree, any nitrogen will create leafy growth and hinder the blooms.
      If yours aren't blooming it's probably one of two reasons:
      Their backs aren't baking in the sun.
      Over time, the rhizomes can get covered up.
      You just need to dust them off like a baseball base!
      Make sure those backs are showing.
      Or
      They need to be divided.
      Like Brian mentioned, they need to be divided every 3 or 4 years and spaced out a bit.
      Sometimes when they get too crowded they stop blooming.
