Another advantage of solar: With regular quartz watches you have to open the case to change the battery, and often times opening the case will significantly degrade the water resistance ability of the watch. To keep your watch as waterproof as it was when it left the factory, whenever you open the case you may have to replace and re-grease the gaskets and do a water pressure test. Solar avoids this, as there is no need to open the case ever, which means you get to keep the factory waterproofing.

Spot on with regards to the advantages of this type of watch. The perfect precise and reliable movement to meet the challenges of the encroaching zombie, or dare I say COVID-19 apocalypse. Greetings from Denmark, by the way. Keep up the good work.

I buy a Casio shock AWG 100 solar around 2009, still working like first day I buy it, also have to mention that is multi band 5 is always adjusting the right time according tho the atomic clock, I don’t have to worry about adjusting time
Hi great video covered all the corners. I have owned a Bering watch for 4 years and is ticking along perfect. Reason for going solar was that I only wear a watch very occasionally and didn't want to reach for one of the 4 I own to find I needed a battery change. Bering make a range for all occasions and are very low profile on the wrist and in the case of my choice, fine mesh strap come with a safety catch on the strap. Since my purchase they have become more competitive, I would heartily recommend 👌
Just got a solar watch for christmas. Pretty cool. I had a water resistant battery powered one and when i went and got the battery changed it stoped working i found out that water had gotten in it after the jewler changed the battery. It Stinks becaue it was a cute watch, but now i have a seiko solar that is beautiful.
Well, the super titanium diver, about 3 years. However, I used to have the calibre 8700 eco and had that one for 11 years or so it may have been 3 years longer than that. It was still running fine when I sold it about a year ago. Excellent watches!
You should have also mentioned the KINETIC movement (quartz accuracy with electromechanically generated power, now somewhat out of favour) of which I have 4 (3 SEIKOS and a LORUS). However, my preference is now exclusively for SOLAR watches of which I own 1 SEIKO, 2 PULSARS (a SEIKO of sorts), 4 CITIZENS, 1 CASIO and 1 ESKEI. And that explains my love of solar: you can have a solid Diver, an Everyday, a fine Dress (that Stiletto is really thin!), a multifunction Sports and a really cheap (under £10!) multifunction Sports. All using the same reliable technology. But my main reason for loving Solars? They are all "ready to go" and require next to no adjustment, autowinding, etc, etc. I would (maybe) like a Rolex or Omega, but I just do not have the money - and they still would not be "always ready to wear.
I have two Citizens eco drives 15 and 18 years old still running never missed a beat, when I'm not wearing them they live on the window sill so they always get light
Informative video, thanks. I’ve owned Casio, Citizen and Seiko, all solar. Some Casio are over 20 years old and still good. I would not recommend Seiko, they die out even with good care.
Good video. I have subscribed to your channel with the hope you will continue to produce quality videos about watches. There is another type of quartz watch that also is run by a battery that is chargeable, but not by light, instead by mechanical means. Namely kinetic, which I believe is only produced by Seiko. The rechargeable battery in a kinetic watch is charged by the movement of the arm just like an automatic. There is a rotor in the movement that when engaged, sends a charge to the battery to keep it powered, and it also does not require changing every 2 or 3 years. It's a combo mech/quartz style so to speak. I have 4 solar watches, 2 Citizens and 2 Casios, and one kinetic. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed! I am somewhat familiar with the Kinetic movement from Seiko. Hope you’ll check out all of my other content and let me know what you think!
I have fast increased my collection. Within a short time I have got 7 watches. All light powered. 4 Citizens and 3 Seikos. Very satisfied with them! By the way: until recently I thought only Citizen and Seiko have light powered watches, but I see here there are some other brands as well. And I wonder why are the more expensive models not light powered? Having that said, I am actually tempted to get some automatic watch. The backside window of Seiko 5s showing the mechanism is cool! The bad accuracy makes me still doubtful, though. I read somewhere about 30-45s deviation per DAY with automatics!
Thanks for watching! Sounds like you have a nice collection of solar powered watches! Yeah you should try your hand at some automatics too, they’re fun! They do tend to lose or gain time each day but usually nothing too crazy unless you get something really cheap.

Very good explanation of movements and good reasons to buy a solar watch. to solve the looking down to find your watch not working is a simple matter of changing the battery every two or three years (depending on the watch and type of battery)
My favourite solar powered watch is the CASIO Wave Ceptor WVQ-M410-2AJF. Has all the classic Casio features: stopwatch, timer, world cities times, perpetual calendar, alarm but it's all analogue using three subdials to execute all the functions. On top of all that it has radio time reception. It's only around $100, excellent value.
My Seiko SNE050 just turned six years old. I'm wondering if in 15 more years there will still be the same model battery available? I guess I'm getting ahead of myself though. For the price I could just buy a new watch if they are making solar in another fifteen years. Anyhow, I love my solar as a reliable maintenance free backup to my finicky vintage watches. Enjoyed your video!
thanks for information i needed a solar watch , I lived in very small town no place change battery have to go the big city to get batteries for my watch, so now save time and gas money in long run with solar watch.
Another advantage is solar watches usually have the width of a quartz watch which means they are skinnier and can fit under your dress shirt, suit jacket, etc.
I'm have a citizen eco-drive watch but the glass is scratched. if I were to change the glass will I mess up the solar charging mechanism? can I change it to something more resistant to scratches? (sapphire perhaps)
Love my solar Seiko. The one I picked up SNE036, I saw at 8:08 of your video and it went up $40 on Amazon. LoL. Worth every penny though. I couldn't agree more that solar is the way to go with a daily wear watch.
@@TheTownWatch The Seiko Solar V175 movement have been around for quite a while. However their technology was vastly revamped recently thanks to the introduction of the V175-0EY0. You are correct in that nothing comes close for accuracy in a wristwatch UNLESS it is an internet connected Smart watch. These are tied to atomic time and are accurate to 1 second per 100 million years. The rubbish Apple iWatches have this accuracy however they are over priced mini wrist mounted computers that have nothing to do with what any sane person would call a true watch. Smart watches are over priced, glued shut, short battery life gimmicks that require a few hundred dollars for a technician to fit a very expensive "pouch" battery. Your claim of 20 years between a Seiko solar battery replacement is optimistic but then again most owners can perform this when required in under 5 minutes and for under US$15.00. GREAT channel! Subscribed from Australia.
cant the battery still only be recharged so many times and hold that capcity from the sun for so long? battery still has memory like any other watch correct? still only charged so many times?
I have had kinetic watches, always give good time but the one I have now looking shabby. You seem like a switched guy, so I think I might buy one of these solar powered type watch. Thanks my friend 👍👍

I bought at Christmas time, nothing fancy but I've been very impressed, it's very accurate, it's powered by Seiko's VS37A movement and at the end of each month has been just 2 seconds fast. I'll definitely be adding a nice solar powered diver to my collection soon. Why aren't all quartz watches solar powered??? Great video thanks
@@TheTownWatch Thank you. The Seiko VS37A is powering a Bering Solar Chronograph, I bought this purely for is looks and got it for a very reasonable £55 plus import fees. I've been very pleased with it considering the bargain price it also gave me the confidence to track down a Seiko Solar Tuna (not so easy!) I particularly wanted a SNE497P1, and thought I had done so only to be informed that it had sold "moments before receiving my deposit" happily I have just received confirmation of a purchase of the required model. I think that it looks most like the stainless steel Marine Master and I will replace the black shroud with stainless steel. For me the solar powered movement makes a lot of sense, and I find it quite surprising that many people are unaware of their existence, especially given their environmental implications. When I found out that they can provide 20 years + of trouble free use (my friends father has had an Eco Drive Citizen since '91 which is still going strong)I decided my collection should definitely include them.
@@TheTownWatch Hi, follow up on solar watches. My Bering Solar Chronograph manages +2 secs per month, it has the Seiko VS37A movement in it. My passion is really divers tho', and I've always drooled over Seiko's Tuna's & Turtle's but they're well outside my budget. I was delighted when they brought out the Prospex Tuna range and decided that I would get the SNE497P1 as to me it looked closest to the Marinemaster. I have to say that apart from it's aesthetic appeal (I have added a stainless steel shroud which I put on it when wearing with a Strapcode bracelet & the original black shroud looks great with an olive green nato, two watches in one!) but as a watch I was rather disappointed. +1 sec per 24 hours? Shoddy bracelet (just as well that I'd decided to change it before purchasing) I have two automatics that run at +1 sec per day. I also looked at a Prospex Captain Willard whilst in store and was able to handle it and examine it very closely, there's simply no way this watch is worth the £1,200 asking price. Side by side with my Steeldive homage of the same, it looked like it was the little over a hundred pound homage. I have replaced the clasp on mine and refinished the end links so that the fit is excellent. I didn't mind doing it given the purchase price, I enjoyed doing it in fact. I wouldn't expect to have to replace a very wobbly when closed clasp on a watch that cost almost 12 × more. Nor would I expect the bezel to be off kilter. Seiko have lost their way at the entry and mid level tiers, it is a terrible shame, they make inspired designs, brilliant movements and I'm told excellent expensive watches, but they seem only interested in selling over priced limited edition and poorly specced watches at the entry/mid level. I think most people expect sapphire crystal and ceramic bezels these days not to mention bezels that align. It's very sad like losing an old friend
I also love solar watches and have quite a few, but you forgot to mention one movement when you discussed the various types of movement: the Seiko Kinetic. Same advantages as solar, but with a mechanical feel to it. And the same price range as solar.

@@giadamino , actually, you are very wrong. Modern Seiko Kinetics use similar capacitors as there Solars, with a power reserve of at least six months and when they eventually run out of power, it only takes a few shakes to get it going again. I have two Kinetics and that is what it is.
@@giadamino , I agree about the Spring Drive being much more desirable, but it is also much more expensive; only available in Grand Seiko and a few very high end Seiko's. I doubt very much you can get a Spring Drive for less than $3000. And I love the mechanical feel of a Kinetic.
I've got myself a Citizen red arrows watch which was a little pricey but it has an antenna that connects to the closest tower which are connected to the atomic clock and it tries to connect to it 2 times a night and one automatic that I've set so it always has a correct time

This is a highly informative video. So, if your solar battery no longer hold a charge, do you just replace it with a rechargeable battery at that point or is that even possible?
Clownfish777 Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it! Yes I believe that is what you have to do if the battery does actually die completely. This shouldn’t happen though until after 20+ years or so.
A watch shop owner told me my new Seiko coutura solar worth $725 will die in the ass if I let the solar charge die say if u left it in ur bedroom for 6 months. Bullshit? And he sells police watches...I think he is just jealous
Yes the battery/capacitor will die, and yes you can replace it. My Seiko V175 batt/cap died after only 6 yrs. Shops are asking $90-150 to replace it. But I see them on AMZN for $25, so I will buy tools and replace it myself.

Very nice! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the quick but clear explanation of the different types of watch mechanics (or movements). As a watch noob, this was really helpful for me.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience with Bering!
Thanks for watching! Enjoy your Seiko Solar!
Great vid man. I’ve got a citizen that’s been hanging in there since I bought it in 1997....doesn’t miss a beat.
Wow! 😮 That’s absolutely amazing! 23 years! Thanks for sharing this testimony! Also, thanks for watching and supporting the channel!

Great video! Very educational for all watch enthusiasts! Thank you for this!

Get one that sync’s with an atomic clock and it will stay nearly perfect forever!❤️
Have the Citizen super titanium pro diver.
It’s fantastic!!!
Thanks!
Well, the super titanium diver, about 3 years.
However, I used to have the calibre 8700 eco and had that one for 11 years or so it may have been 3 years longer than that. It was still running fine when I sold it about a year ago.
Excellent watches!
Great video! Happy Christmas to me! Just got a Seiko Solar dress watch today! Very excited to own this!

I also recently started to collect watches. Do you mean sne498 or 499? When I search I don't find any sne49.
I just bought my first solar watch: a Seiko SSC376 Coutura Perpetual. It’s gorgeous!
Nice!! Hope you enjoy! Thanks for watching!
Spot on. My GW6900 has been going on for six years and still works great.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Awesome! Sounds like you have a great collection of solar watches! Thanks for watching!
I have two Citizens eco drives 15 and 18 years old still running never missed a beat, when I'm not wearing them they live on the window sill so they always get light
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Informative video, thanks. I’ve owned Casio, Citizen and Seiko, all solar. Some Casio are over 20 years old and still good. I would not recommend Seiko, they die out even with good care.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
agree, my seiko fail to work due to the battey only last for 3.5 years
@@giantso my Seiko v158 slept after Five years of service due to its battery failure
Hi, can you tell me the names of your Seiko watchss

I have had BN0191-80L but sold it.

I think Seiko and Citizen are very similar quality.
But I can actually not give more specific information about the battery life, that requires careful testing during long time. A fully charged solar/eco drive will run for several months without light, though.
Very good explanation of movements and good reasons to buy a solar watch.
I already have a Promaster Eco-Drive and this week I'm waiting for another Eco-Drive (the Garrison) and the Orient New 70's ... I will need to keep them close to a window to keep them all charged - LOL.

Ha! Glad I came across this channel, I've started my watch collection this year and I purchased 2 Solars and one Kinetic which I actually really like but was wondering if I made a mistake by not making my full collection all automatic or mechanical (becoming a borderline "Watch Snob") but your video has reminded me of why I purchased my Solars and Kinetic, Appreciate it!
Thanks for watching! I love watches of all kinds! Solar, mechanical, automatic, and everything in between!
Unfortunately there`s a problem with solar battery in some G-Shocks. I have GMW-B5000 with auto light option.
I had to set 4s-->2s and I`m thinking about to switch it OFF because the battery is problematic in short days at Autum/Winter season.
I haven't heard about this issue. Thanks for watching and sharing.

to solve the looking down to find your watch not working is a simple matter of changing the battery every two or three years (depending on the watch and type of battery)
True. Thanks for watching!
Bought a Casio full metal gshock tough solar. Most happy 🎉
Great explanation, thank you sir 😁
Casio AQ S-800W bought it 2010 still looking good now :P
thanks for information i needed a solar watch , I lived in very small town no place change battery
have to go the big city to get batteries for my watch, so now save time and gas money in long run with solar watch.

Another advantage is solar watches usually have the width of a quartz watch which means they are skinnier and can fit under your dress shirt, suit jacket, etc.

All very good points. The best point is the lack of battery change. It’s the worst thing about quartz watches. Solar solves the problem.

My Seiko V175 Solar Chrono battery/capacitor died after 6 years. So what is the advantage to solar again?
I would say this is abnormal not the norm. Thanks for watching.

I have two solar/six bands Gshock's and love them, it even walks my dogs 🐶
I bought at Christmas time, nothing fancy but I've been very impressed, it's very accurate, it's powered by Seiko's VS37A movement and at the end of each month has been just 2 seconds fast. I'll definitely be adding a nice solar powered diver to my collection soon. Why aren't all quartz watches solar powered??? Great video thanks
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy that Seiko!
@@oktc68 Awesome! I’ve heard of the Bering brand, they make some nice looking pieces. Glad you tracked down a solar tuna too! Enjoy it!
SA Airgunner Thanks for watching and commenting! Yeah, you’re right, I only mentioned the three movement types that I did because they are the most common ones. I hope you’ll subscribe if you’re not already! Once we reach 1000 subscribers I’ll be doing another watch giveaway! You won’t want to miss it!
I've got myself a Citizen red arrows watch which was a little pricey but it has an antenna that connects to the closest tower which are connected to the atomic clock and it tries to connect to it 2 times a night and one automatic that I've set so it always has a correct time
I own a Casio MRW-S300H solar powered watch. It's nice and cheap. Only $39.😀
